Tyson Fury charged in to confront Wladimir Klitschko in a Batman outfit to the soundtrack of the movie.

Our giant traveller then dived across a table to flatten a stooge dressed as the Joker.

That done, Britain's forthcoming challenger for the world heavyweight title set about threatening the champion 'you next, you next, you next!' Fury raged in Klitschko's face.

It was pantomime time as the Klitschko-Fury roadshow picks up pace en route to the big fight night in a 55,000-seater football stadium in Dusseldorf on October 24.

As part of the display, Fury jumped over the table, wrestled the masked man to the floor and sent some of Klitschko's world title belts to the ground in the process. He then marched him out of the room and returned soon after, this time dressed in a smart three-piece suit.

The multi-national, multi-lingual Klitschko retained his customary distinguished poise throughout Fury's ranting promotion of the multi-million pound extravaganza in Germany.

Klitsckho did not even blink when Fury peeled off the jacket of the suit into which he had changed from his batman gear and screamed: 'I'll knock you out right here and now if you call me a clown again.'

Never mind that Tyson the Furious had called Vlad the Impaler everything from a 'bum' and a 'nobody' to a 's***house' to begin with.

All those involved caught the mood. Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente called out: 'It's Superman vs Batman.'

After flattening his Joker, Fury screamed at Klitschko: 'This is a fool like you are. You will end up like him on your back.'

'So bring on the clowns,' Klitschko grinned and told Fury: 'I have a lot of friends in the circus business. Once I have defeated you I will get you a job in the circus as a clown. Do not take that wrong, it is very difficult making people laugh. I mean this as a compliment.'

Fury did not take it like that. He rose to his full 6ft 9in height and said: 'Call me that again and I'll fight you right now. Go on call me a clown.'

Klitschko: 'You are a clown.'

As the minders stepped between them Klitschko added: 'Tyson, you are doing a great job. You are selling the fight.'

He would say later: 'He was never going to fight here. The body language told me that. If you really want to start punching you are not waiting for people to hold you back.

'Although Tyson was putting on a performance I do think that deep down inside he is insecure. A little boy. On October 24 it will be a welcome to him to big-time boxing. He knows that then he will be facing the man.'

Those subsequent asides were not as much fun as the show but perhaps more insightful.

Fury would say: 'Do I look as if I'm in awe of him? I don't think so. I do not respect anyone for their money and achievements. Nor for how they come across.

'I can only respect someone I know well enough. Like I respect Frank Bruno who is a hero of mine and I hope he gets well in time to come to the fight.'

Fury had kept the champion waiting for fully 15 minutes before they could start this so-called press conference.

He said: 'Sorry about that, I was stuck in the London traffic.'

Once his grandstanding was over he said: 'It's not important if I get under his skin. I don't believe any of this plays a part in a fight. Not unless someone's weak-minded. It's just a conference.'

Having repeatedly promised to KO Klitschko, Fury said later: 'Really, I'm a realist. Either he will knock me out or I will knock him out. There's just two elements here - win or lose. To be honest I'm not fussed either way. I just want it to be a good fight and if it's a draw we can have a massive rematch.'

Since he is predicting that 30,000 of his fellow Englishmen will make the trip to Dusseldorf, including 'every traveller in our country' they would have to build a bigger stadium if that happens.

Fury does not regard that eventuality as likely. He told Klitschko: 'Don't do your usual jab, punch and run. Let's make it a fight. I want to feel pain. I want you to hurt me. I want broken noses and blood and bright lights behind the eyes. To be honest I don't care if you beat me as long as you do the job properly. If that happens once I get up I'll give you the biggest hug in the world and there'll be no excuses from me.'

That was an oblique reference to David Haye blaming his defeat by Klitschko on a broken little toe. The only parallels Fury sees with Haye is that they have both tried to unsettle the man who has dominated heavyweight prize-fighting for a decade.

Klitschko said of Haye's 'decapitation' threats and Fury's song and dance: 'It seems it's like this when I fight an Englishman. They are both out of the same box, although in different ways.'

There were repetitions of Klitschko's familiar offer to repeat for Fury the 'psychological therapy' with which he cured Haye.

'Now I will save Fury from being bi-polar.'

Fury reiterated: 'You are so boring, you put everyone to sleep. What I'm gonna do is retire you and so the heavyweight divisions can become exciting again.'

Klitschko ribbed his challenger about his habit of singing in the ring. With Rod Stewart due to perform immediately before the fight, Fury gave voice with a parody of the hit sing Maggie May: 'Wake up Klitschko I'm coming over you.'

Then he added: 'I think I'll invite Rod to do a duet in the ring for me for my victory song.'

There was a promise from Fury of 'more fun and games to come in fight week' and that's what was confirmed as they went their separate ways for the time being.

After a long, stare down - notably without incident - the pair of them were smiling and chatting to each other.

There was a warm handshake and Fury said: 'Best of luck, my friend.'

Klitschko vs Fury will be live on Sky Sports Box Office on October 24
