Lupita Nyong'o shines in red tulle dress as she joins writer Danai Gurira to celebrate opening night of their play Eclipsed

Lupita Nyong'o and writer-actor Danai Gurira celebrated the opening of their new off-Broadway play.

The Oscar-winner stars in the African war drama Eclipsed, which was written by playwright and Walking Dead actor Danai.

The actors both looked gorgeous as they attended the play's opening night at The Public Theater in Manhattan.

The opening night appeared to have been a big success, with the actresses both flashing big smiles as they celebrated their latest artistic accomplishment. 

Lupita again showed her love of bright colors with it comes to fashion, wearing a deep red gown with pretty pink crystal design.

The glittery gown featured a deep V neckline and sheer tulle skirt.

The Star Wars actress wore her pretty natural hair in a twist across her hairline, and complimented her gown with pink lipstick and bright pink laced heels.

Writer Danai looked stylish in a blue and silver embossed dress with a belted waist. 

The multi-talented actor and playwright explained to DuJour magazine that she was inspired to write the play, which follows five women in Liberia, after learning about female soldiers in Africa.

'I was enthralled by an image I saw in the New York Times in 2003 of women in the Liberian war right when it was at its climax,' she said. 

'There were some women rebel fighters who were getting attention in the Western press because no one had ever seen anything like this,' she told the magazine.

'I was raised in Africa and I had never seen anything like it, women with AK-47s, dressed very hip and looking formidable. I was keen to one day pursue that story and put it on the stage.'

Danai was born in Iowa but was raised in Zimbabwe from the age of five, after her parents moved back after the country gained its independence.

The off-Broadway play follows five women in Liberia - four wives of a warlord and a woman who is a peace negotiator. 

The Walking Dead star traveled to the previously war-torn African nation in 2007 to conduct research while working for a non-profit.

Lupita stars in the drama, along with Pascale Armand, Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh. The play runs until November 26.

Ghanian actress Akosua Busia, who also appears in the play, wore a bright green headress and long skirt in a bright African fabric for the opening night.

In addition to being hard at work on her play, Danai also recently returned to TV screens as Michonne on AMC zombie drama The Walking Dead, which returned for its sixth season on Monday.
