Neil Young's beloved $1m LincVolt hybrid convertible breaks down on outing with girlfriend Daryl Hannah

Neil Young and Daryl Hannah were left stranded by the side of the road when his $1 million, custom-built LincVolt hybrid broke down on Monday.

The couple were cruising along in the singer's famous 1959 LincVolt when the battery appeared to die, forcing them to pull over while out in Ventura County.

The pair called on friends to help and were later seen pushing the car - which Neil reportedly spent $1 million retrofitting to an electric hybrid - to the side of the road.

The unique car is a custom-built 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible which the Old Man singer retrofitted into a one-of-a-kind, fuel-efficient demonstration vehicle, in a bid to prove that Americans can have their big gas-guzzlers and still go green.

The 59-year-old singer and the 54-year-old actress have been dating for more than a year.

Both are committed environmental activists, and Neil also drove the LincVolt around the US to promote a greener lifestyle.

However, on Monday the car refused to co-operate as its battery died.

Exiting the 20-foot car, Splash star Daryl bundled up against the chill in a white cardigan fingerless black gloves.

She wore green flared corduroy pants and pink, cats-eye sunglasses as she carried her bags.

Canadian Neil wore a brown hat over his long grey hair and a brown coat.

The stranded pair called a group of friends to help, and four men were later seen pushing the car to the side of the parking lot, before the couple climbed into a pal's car and sped off.

Earlier this month, Neil posted a photo of his beloved LincVolt to social media with some details about its efficiency.

The car sits on the beach before a beautiful purple and orange sunset in the Instagram photo, which he shared on November 5.

'55 miles per gallon on cellulosic ethanol,' the Cinnamon Girl singer wrote.

'86% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from lincvolts innovative generator.'  He signed off: 'have a nice day neil.'
