No laughing matter: Amy Schumer poses in just a bra to promote gun safety after yet another fatal school shooting

The subject of gun control is no laughing matter.

And Amy Schumer did her best to maximise publicity for the cause, as she posed in just a bra to promote National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Thursday.

The comic Instagrammed the revealing image of herself, in which she appeared to be wearing no underpants, writing: 'Today please #wearorange for gun safety! #everytown'.

Coming the day after yet another fatal school shooting - this time at the University of California - the image was obviously designed to provoke as much interest as possible in Amy's cause.

Gun control is a subject close to her heart, following the tragic murder of two audience members during a showing of her film Trainwreck in Lafayette last year.

She referenced the deaths in her second snap of the day, writing: 'Me and my honeys on set like to #wearorange. Thinking of you today and everyday Mayci and Jillian'.

The shooting, which also injured nine other audience members, spurred Amy into taking action.

'My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana.' the 35-year-old tweeted at the time.

She later joined her father's cousin, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, in calling for stricter gun control and increased mental health funding.

Crying while speaking at a press conference with Senator Schumer, she told the audience: 'These shootings have got to stop.

'I don't know how else to say it.'

While it is for her witty sense of humour that the Inside Amy Schumer star is famous, she is a firm believer in using her prominence to support matters close to her heart.

Along with gun control, she also promotes the importance of a healthy self-image, posting unretouched photos of her own body online.
