With last year’s devastating wildfires still vivid, this workshop provided an opportunity for Colorado decision makers, along with regional and national stakeholders, to discuss how locally crafted land use policies lessen wildfire risks. As development continues in Colorado’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) area, local, regional and national stakeholders all have a vested interest in protecting life and property values in these hazardous environments. The cost of lost homes from the three most devastating fires in Colorado history is $667 million; all these fires have occurred along the Front Range in the WUI over the past three years preceding 2013.
Workshop goals and outcomes are:
- Increase dialogue among policymakers on opportunities and barriers to implementing local wildland urban interface land use policies and regulations.
- Equip practitioners with information and resources to assist in implementation of land use plans, policies, and regulations to reduce the threat of wildfire across the Colorado Front Range.
- Produce a report to synthesize event’s highlights and outline potential next steps.
The presentations for this workshop are also available. If you represent Front Range communities threatened by WUI fires, your voice is needed as a part of this on-going initiative to support dialogue for how Colorado manages growth and fire in the future.
