Catastrophic multiple death fires occur all too often, but do they have to? In 2004, 32 catastrophic multiple-death fires killed 152 people (34 of them children under the age of six) compared to 2003 when 35 fires killed 307 people (including the 100 deaths at the Rhode Island nightclub fire).
