Death certificates have revealed that Carrie Fisher died of a heart attack due to a unknown cause with her mother Debbie Reynolds suffering a fatal stroke.

The Star Wars actress, 60, died last month after suffering a cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles in the days before Christmas.

Just a day later her mother, aged 84, star of films such as Singin' in the Rain and Tammy, fell ill while making funeral arrangements for her daughter and later died after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital.

The death certificate of Debbie Reynolds showed she suffered a fatal stroke brought on by hypertension

Now death certificates for the pair have been released confirming the causes of death for both the mother and daughter.

First, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a death certificate in the name of Carrie Frances Fisher.

Under 'cause of death' it says 'cardiac arrest/deferred.' The 'deferred' designation indicates that more investigation is needed by the county coroner, usually in the form of toxicology tests that can take several weeks to complete.

Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd is listed as the notifying party.

The actress and writer fell ill on a trans-atlantic flight on December 23 but died four days later at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

The death certificate lists 'writer' as the occupation in which Fisher spent most of her life.

It also says the mother-of-one had been in the entertainment business for 46 years, and her highest level of education was 10th grade.

Meanwhile, TMZ obtained the death certificate of Reynolds, which lists her as an actress in the entertainment industry for 68 years.

The cause of death is listed as a intracerebral hemorrhage, which is a type of stroke.

It is also listed that hypertension, also known as abnormally high blood pressure, was a cause of the stroke.

Carrie had recently filmed two Star Wars sequels and was promoting her latest tell-all book, The Princess Diarist, when she fell ill

Her notifying party has been listed as her son, Todd Fisher and the place of her death as Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on December 28.

Mr Fisher told that his mother said 'I want to be with Carrie' right before she fell ill.

Family said she had been in poor health in recent years, and suffered other strokes, and Fisher's death pushed her over the edge.

The mother and daughter had a tight bond despite previous years of estrangement, and their dynamic was highlighted in the HBO documentary Bright Lights, in which Fisher said 'I'm my mother's best friend' and Reynolds said that she tells her daughter 'everything.'

Reynolds was still performing to packed crowds into her 80s, and Fisher had recently filmed two Star Wars sequels and was promoting her latest tell-all book, The Princess Diarist, when she fell ill.

In her book, she confessed that she and the then-married Harrison Ford, who was 33 to her 19, had a three month fling. 'It was so intense,' she told People .

Fisher, star of the Star Wars saga, and Reynolds were mourned in a joint memorial at their neighboring homes on Thursday, and had a joint funeral at a Hollywood Hills cemetery the next day.

Relatives have said they are now planning a public memorial for them.
