All hail Johanna Konta (pictured right with her sister Eva Mumford, brother-in-law Shane Mumford and their child Ollie), the first British woman to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals since dinosaurs roamed the Earth, writes JAN MOIR. Or at least since 1978 when Virginia Wade made it into the last four - a year after being crowned the winner. Yesterday, Miss Wade was back at Centre Court to watch women's tennis history being made as the Eastbourne-based 26-year-old (pictured inset with her sister and nephew and left on Centre Court) followed in her plimsolled footsteps. It was a great victory for the pony-tailed player few outside tennis circles knew much about until last week. Now of course, we all love her to bits. Come on, Konta!

Friends in high places are always helpful ... particularly when it comes to getting your hands on Wimbledon tickets. And Carole Middleton appeared to be making good use of her friendship with Roger Federer and his wife, Mirka, at the tournament this week - by securing herself two last-minute Centre Court spots. The Duchess of Cambridge's mother, said to consider world number three Federer a 'heart-throb', was overheard asking Mrs Federer if she had 'any spare tickets' for Monday afternoon's play.

The Spanish royals, left, were given an official farewell with honours at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport (left) as they set off for London, where they were greeted on behalf of The Queen by The Viscount Brookeborough, Lord-in-Waiting. But they also received a traditional English welcome in the form of a heavy shower after touching down at Stansted Airport (right). Queen Letizia (inset) and her husband will be formally greeted by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on Horse Guards Parade on Wednesday. It is expected to be 96-year-old Philip's last state visit before he retires from public duties after the summer. The state visit is seen as an important step in securing relations with Spain as the UK leaves the EU.

The incredible scenes were caught on camera by student ranger Oliver Lane, at the Umlani Bushcamp in Timbavati Private Nature Reserve in Hoedspruit, in South Africa's Limpopo province. The footage shows a buffalo doing its best to fight off two lions. Together, the predators manage to drag their prey to the ground and proceed to dig their fangs into the helpless animal. But as the buffalo cries out in distress, his friends come running back to fight off the predators. Overpowered, the lions are forced to slink off without any dinner.

Matt Owen (left), 33, from Buckinghamshire, became extremely angry when his lover Rachel Croft-Roberts (pictured) left his birthday at the five-star Brown's Hotel in London. The Deloitte solicitor was shouting at her about 'other men', before grabbing hold of her wrists, screaming abuse in her face and spitting on her twice. The ex-grammar school pupil said he could not remember spitting on Miss Croft-Roberts during the boozy row. She told police she had been attacked by Owen on a number of occasions. The office administrator said he dragged her out of bed by her ankles on holiday because he was angry about pictures she had uploaded on Facebook and Instagram.

Photos from inside Soundgarden's Chris Cornell's (inset left) hotel room after his suicide have been released. The frontman's lifeless body was found by his bodyguard Martin Kristen who went to check on the singer after his wife Vicky Karayiannis called - unable to get a hold of him. Kristen kicked open the main door to his room at the MGM Grand in Detroit. Inside the room a guitar was laying on a chair (seen main), a crumpled flight ticket was also found (pictured top right), the noose used in the suicide is seen middle right and prescription pills were also found in the room (pictured bottom right).

The North Korean dictator sat next to his wife Ri Sol-ju and weapons engineer Jang Chang-ha after promoting him following the launch of Hwasong-14, which is believed to be capable of reaching most of Alaska. Leading the bill at the concert was the Moranbong Band, an all-female ensemble that was hand-picked by Kim. Among the numbers performed were 'Song of Hwasong Rocket' and 'Make Others Envy Us.' The concert took place amid claims the launch was not as successful as first thought with South Korean intelligence saying the North has not secured re-entry capabilities for its ICBM programme.

Hugh Grant has branded Donald Trump Jr a w****r in a Twitter post showing the US President's son holding a sawn off elephant's tail during a 2010 hunting trip.  The English actor posted the hunting picture with the caption 'Americans often ask me to define the British word "w****r".' The pictures were taken on a trip to Zimbabwe in 2010, with other shots showing Trump Jr and brother Eric posing with a leopard they killed, as well as a hunted buffalo and their raft of guns. 

Mother-of-three Ashley Murrell, 33, had a heated argument with her husband Mikey (together, left), 36, when he returned home late from a 16 hour shift as she was worried he was running himself into the ground. Mrs Murrell, from Somerset, told her husband to sleep on the sofa on May 16, but when the beauty therapist woke up the next morning, she discovered her husband had died. She later learned her husband, who worked as a carpet cleaner, had been working extra hours to save money to take her to Prague for their anniversary on July 3. But now it has emerged that she is now in a relationship with his brother, Chris (right), after he supported her through her grief.

Drone footage has captured hundreds of sharks swimming close to school children and through schools of baitfish (bottom left and right) at Red Bluff on Quobba Station in Western Australia's north. Photographer Sean Scott couldn't believe his eyes when he saw two three-metre Bronze Whalers (top left) stalking the youngsters at the beach. 'I flew [my drone] over and then saw these sharks sort of swimming across thinking, "what's going on here''?' The Bronze Whalers came terrifyingly close to the children as they floated on their bodyboards in the murky waters just metres from shore. 'They were obviously going over to have a little bit of a look and got pretty close and realised that wasn't their food chain and turned around,' Mr Scott said. 'But it was pretty incredible to see these boys just floating on their back.'

Last week, a survey of 15 devices by Which? found that eight were vulnerable to hacking. Having set up a home with gadgets, the consumer group invited a team of security researchers, SureCloud, to hack it. One of their most disturbing discoveries involved a range of toys by CloudPets (top right). These include cuddly cats, unicorns and bears costing as little as £5.99. Not only could the hackers use the toy to listen to what was going on in the room, they could also use it to send messages. Also found to vulnerable to hackers were the Smarter I Kettle, top centre; Amazon Echo, bottom centre. Baby monitors (bottom right) can also be accessed.

The video, which is described as 'like something out of a film', shows thugs Milo Stanley and Daniel Robson attacking two victims (pictured) outside Winter's Wine Bar, on Little Underbank, Stockport. They got out of a red Mini and hit one victim with a machete and then a second who came to his aid. After further scuffles the two attackers drove off at speed, running over one of the victims, who was sent flying over the car roof and crashing onto the floor.

The footage from Baku, Azerbaijan, shows the aftermath of a crash, in which a Lada car smashed into the back of a Volga. Witnesses rush to the scene to free the victims, as a huge fireball explodes. One rescuer kicks the glass out of the window before helping pull the driver from the car as another smashes the window from the passenger side.

In a hilarious gallery of images posted online people have revealed the very worst spelling and grammar howlers they have come across on social media. In many cases a missed comma or apostrophe has caused a Facebook status to have a whole new meaning - often with embarrassing consequences. In several examples a visit from the grammar police has not been well received, with red faced people hitting back at their critics.

In newly released police body camera footage, the Transformers actor is heard repeatedly using expletives, name-calling law enforcement officers and accusing a black cop of arresting 'white people who give a f***.' LaBeouf (pictured in his mugshot, inset), 31, was charged on Saturday with public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and obstruction after getting aggressive over a cigarette in a hotel lobby. LaBeouf was later released from jail after posting $7,000 bond.

Jahed Choudhury, 24, from Darlaston, West Midlands married his partner of two years Sean Rogan, 19, in a ceremony in Walsall with both grooms wearing traditional Bangladeshi outfits. Mr Choudhury explained that his new husband saved his life when he approached him two years ago. Mr Choudhury said that he and his new husband have faced death threats, with people claiming they should never have been born. He said: 'I want to say to all people going through the same thing that it's okay - we're going to show the whole world that you can be gay and Muslim.'

Prince William, 35, joined veterans who flew and worked on RAF aircraft during the Second World War (left, with Flight Lieutenant Russell 'Rusty' Waughman), at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, on Tuesday. The Duke is patron of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), which was formed on July 11 1957 by Group Captain Peter Thompson, a former Battle of Britain Hurricane pilot. He was treated to a display by Spitfires, Hurricanes and a Lancaster (main).

The three-minute clip (main) of the talented singer belting out Les Miserables' I Dreamed a Dream in Lichfield was posted on Facebook by Amber Lakin. The singer has now been revealed as 28-year-old Matt Bond (inset), from Castle Bromwich. The singer told MailOnline: 'I'm a singer and actor at the Royal Academy of Music but before this I used to be a social worker.' Crowds can be seen gathering around and cheering on the singer as he hits some impressive notes. Posting the video online, Amber said: 'Genuinely stuck for words- not like me!' Since being posted online, the video has been watched 352,000 times and shared more than 6,000 times. Hundreds posted comments about how 'fantastic' the singer was and claiming he should appear in musical theatre shows on the West End.

The video shows French mastiff Legend being hosed down by a child using a hose pipe (pictured) in a metal tub. The video was an instant hit, clocking up thousands of views on Instagram and numerous comments. Mr Lawhead said the dog was overheated and enjoys being cooled down by the child, who is his 'best friend'.

Adam Simpson, 26, from Bedale, North Yorkshire, was relaxing by the pool at an Italian villa when he started doing elaborate dives into the water. He was then challenged to attempt an 'underflip' straight through the hole of a bright pink flamingo. And to everyone's amazement, he performed the stunt perfectly first time. Adam was attending his cousin's wedding at the Castello di Montalto. He said: 'As the day went on, some of the bride's family and friends attended the pool and brought an inflatable flamingo and lobster.'

Geraldine and Robert from Lancashire were slammed on social media for the state of their home. They were helped by the RSPCA to clean up so their pets could live in a safe environment. Their story was shown on Channel 5's The Dog Rescuers with Alan Davies, where inspector Jason Bowles (right with Geraldine) visited their home to check on their dog Chesney, 11 (left).

A mansion in Brooklyn is for sale again after four unsuccessful years on the market. 2458 National Drive was built by a mob associated and is owned by a Russian heiress and is priced at $18million. It first went on the market in 2013 for $30million. When no one bought eight-bedroom, nine-bathroom home then, the price was taken down to $17million without the guest house. By 2016, it was priced at $12.5million. Now it's back on the market at $18million including the adjoining guest home. The main house on the gated waterfront property was built by John Rosatti, a multimillionaire and an associate of the Colombo crime family. In the 1990s, he sold the property for $3million when he got into some legal trouble. Galina Anisimova, a Russian heiress who is known as the mother of the 'Russian Paris Hilton', bought the property and is still the current owner.
