More than 5.6 million people ordered to leave Florida

The largest evacuation in US history is underway as more than 5.6million people have been ordered to leave Florida before Category 5 Hurricane Irma strikes the Sunshine State. The state's Gov. Rick Scott urged people who had not left yet to leave as soon as possible on Friday. He warned those who plan to stay, that they may have to ride out the dangerous storm at their own risk. He explained that the biggest concern with the powerful hurricane is the predicted storm surge that will come along with the lashing winds and heavy rains. Andrew Sussman, the state’s hurricane program manager, said Friday the total of those urged to flee Florida includes people throughout the southern half of the state as well as those living in inland Florida in substandard housing. Florida is the nation’s third-largest state with nearly 21million people according to the U.S. Census. Meteorologists expect the powerful hurricane to hit the Sunshine State between 5am and 7am ET on Sunday. As of 6.30pm ET Friday, the hurricane is moving west at 12 mph and located 345 miles southeast of Miami.

Defiant Miami residents who refuse to leave despite Irma

Despite Hurricane Irma fast approaching the Florida coastline and an evacuation order descending quickly upon Miami Beach, some residents are refusing to leave, saying they are safer where they are rather than moving inland such as Marie Fonseca and her friend, Flavio Sobe (bottom right), who plan to ride out the storm. Others, like homeless Ramon Onate (bottom left), hope to find shelter in town. Some are choosing to enjoy the abandoned seaside as their own private beach, such as Nikki Aliosmanova and her boyfriend, Alex Rizov, from the UK (top). However, the majority of stores remained abandoned and boarded up in the coastal town (inset). Irma plans to make landfall in the US on Sunday with winds potentially reaching 155mph.

9/11 conspiracy theories persist 16 years after atrocity

Geoff Campbell (pictured) was one of 67 Britons killed in the 9/11 terror attack at the New York World Trade Centre (right and inset). After the horror on September 11, 2001, there was no trace of Geoff. The 31-year-old risk analyst had been attending a conference on the 106th floor in the North Tower, a short stroll from the Manhattan apartment where he lived with his American fiancée, Caroline (left). At first, his family clung to the hope he was alive, until one year later fragments of a shoulder blade bearing Geoff’s DNA were found among Trade Centre rubble at a landfill site. But Mr Campbell's brother, Matt, refuses to accept the official explanation for the atrocity. As Monday's anniversary approaches, Matt, a former City worker who is married with three children and lives in Sussex, insists that 9/11 did not happen in the way we have been told and that there has been a huge official cover-up to disguise the truth. And this week experts have cast doubt on the official line and said that fire could not have caused the collapse of WTC 7 (circled).

Irma sets her eyes on Cuba and the Bahamas

Cuba is currently bearing the brunt of Hurricane Irma - and the first reports show that the island's north central coast resembles the horrors of other Caribbean islands impacted by the storm. Irma barreled in for a direct hit at Ciego de Avila province around midnight and left Caibairen (pictured main) and most other areas in that region without power. Choppy seas, grey skies, sheets of rain, bending palm trees, huge waves crashing over sea walls and downed power lines filled the state run television's evening newscast on Friday night. Experts have warned that Saturday morning is sure to provide scenes of much greater devastation as Irma works its way along the northern coast westward through Sancti Spiritus and Villa Clara provinces. On Friday Irma momentarily slowed to category four before returning to its prior category five intensity as it scraped over Cuba's north coast (inset center right). It is expected to stay in the area into Saturday before making its way into the central Bahamas. Pictured inset top left and right are scenes of destruction in St Maarten and Tortola where Irma hit earlier this week and left thousands of people stranded and without power or fresh water.

Models blasted for 'tone deaf' photos after Hurricane Irma

Swimsuit models are certainly not shy about sharing images of themselves scantily clad on a beach, but doing so with photos taken on islands being ravaged by Hurricane Irma crosses the line for some on social media. Dana Hamm (left), Lana Alexandra (center), and Kara Del Toro (right) all posted provocative images while sending well wishes to hurricane victims, leading some to accuse them of being self-absorbed (inset).
