Devotion to his art! Christian Bale, who piled on pounds to play Dick Cheney, shows off his paunch as he talks up new western film Hostiles

He was with Rosamund Pike and Wes Studi to chat about their new Western, Hostiles, at the Build Series studios in New York on Monday.

And Christian Bale showed off the weight he gained to play Dick Cheney, President George W. Bush's Vice President, in Backseat.

The 43-year-old piled on the pounds to play the man touted as the most powerful VP in history in the biopic that follows him during the tumultuous years from 2001 to 2009.

The Welsh-born actor covered his still hefty chest and bulging tummy with a black T-shirt and a zip up jacket that he teamed with baggy camouflage pants.

Rosamund, 38, looked chic in a white lace top and black skinny pants as she stood between him and Wes.

The 72-year-old sported a blue sweater and black jeans with a dark blue scarf around his neck and a cap on his head.

Christian is no stranger to changing his physical appearance for roles.

The actor bulked up his muscle mass for American Psycho in 2000.

Then he famously lost 65 pounds after eating only an apple and a can of tuna a day to become the emaciated Trevor Reznik in The Machinist in 2004.

He regained his pecs appeal and six-pack to play Batman in the Dark Knight films in 2008 and 2012.

And he lost all the muscle tone and sported a pot belly in 2013's American Hustle.

Talking to the UK's Independent newspaper at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Christian explained how he put on the pounds for Cheney.
