Sonic the Hedgehog movie delayed by three months as director announces he needs more time to make the character 'just right' after backlash

There was outcry when the design for Sonic the Hedgehog was unveiled earlier this month.

And the movie's director revealed on Friday that the film's release will be delayed by three months as they tweak the character.

Jeff Fowler tweeted on Friday that the film will now open on Feb. 14, 2020, a delay of three months from its original Nov. 8 opening.

'Taking a little more time to make Sonic just right,' Fowler explained on Friday.

He added: '#novfxartistswereharmedinthemakingofthismovie.'

The first trailer of the movie, which stars Jim Carrey, prompted criticism of Sonic's oddly anthropomorphic teeth, which viewers thought were out of place on a hedgehog.

Other critics compared the animal's pointy face to Mike Myers' live-action Cat In The Hat character.

For some, Sonic was simply too fake looking to follow in the footsteps of the groundbreaking CGI of Avengers: Endgame.

The character also was compared unfavorable to the cute Detective Pikachu.

'Thank you for the support. And the criticism,' Fowler tweeted on May 2, following the backlash.

'The message is loud and clear ... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be... #sonicmovie #gottafixfast'

Clearly a quick fix wasn't possible and it wasn't possible to meet the original release date with Sonic needing a make-over.
