I ask because just three years ago the USA experienced one of its most severe influenza outbreaks in recent memory. I am talking about the 2017-18 influenza that according to The American Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was associated with “45 million illnesses, 21 million medical visits, 810,000 hospitalizations.” By September 2018 CNN announced that as many as 80.000 were dead for reasons associated with the outbreak.

The number of flu cases that year in the USA alone was about 18 times higher than the current number of Novel Coronavirus cases worldwide (2.5 million so far). The number of hospitalized American patients was more than 4 times higher than those who have been hospitalised in the USA with Coronavirus symptoms (200.000 to date). The fatalities/hospitalized ratio that year was around 0.1, about the same ratio we saw in Northern Italy last month. And if all of that isn’t enough, the number of American fatalities in 2017-18 was more than three times the deaths currently associated with Covid-19.

In case the above has yet to provoke your suspicious grey cells, maybe looking into the age groups of the 2017-18 USA influenza’s victims will do the job. In the 2017-18 influenza, death rates were highest in the over-65 age group. The CDC reports that “people 65 years and older accounted for approximately 58% of reported influenza-associated hospitalizations.” But the story gets even more interesting. In the 2017-18 flu season the second most affected group was those aged 50 to 64. This is actually very unusual for influenza, as normally the second highest death rate occurs in children, from birth through age 4. Contagion-Infectious Disease Today reported in June 2018 that the “ferociousness of the 17-18 flu season overall, combined with above-average impacts on younger baby boomers, made 2017-2018 one for the record books.”

In September 2018 CNN reported that: “Overall, the United States experienced one of the most severe flu seasons in recent decades.” At this stage, I hope it won’t surprise you to find out that pneumonia was the primary fatal complication associated with the 2017 outbreak.

The following may sound like a description of the current Novel Coronavirus pandemic: “The season began with an increase of illness in November; high activity occurred during January and February, and then illness continued through the end of March.” You guessed right, this is not the description of the current global Corona pandemic but actually how CNN described the outbreak of influenza in America in September 2018.

Does it take a genius to figure out that the American 2017-18 influenza outbreak was pretty ‘similar’ to the current Novel Coronavirus epidemic?

The first question that comes to mind is why didn’t America lock itself down amidst its catastrophic 2017-18 influenza as it has now? One may wonder why the CDC didn’t react to the ‘severity’ of the outbreak that was at least three times as lethal as the current Novel Coronavirus health crisis? But, even more disturbing is the fact that despite the severity of the 2017 flu outbreak and its deadly impact, the enormous number of hospitalisations and the infectious rate, the World Health Organisation (WHO) didn’t see the need to alert the world or to close the planet for business as it did this year. Peculiarly, the WHO didn’t even bother to tag the American outbreak as an epidemic or pandemic. It was just an ordinary ‘influenza.’

This makes me wonder, whether it is possible that what we now consider as ‘novel’ Coronavirus isn’t a novel event after all? If this is the case, how is it possible that America failed to respond to a lethal virus that attacked almost 11% of its population and left 80.000 dead? Was it silenced or is it a story of total dysfunctionality on every possible level?

Those who know something about pandemics and, by now, I am not convinced that Anthony Fauci or the WHO fall into this category, tell us that global pandemics in recent decades came in three waves. The first wave is often severe, the second wave is catastrophic and the third wave is relatively light. I wonder whether it is possible that this stage of the corona crisis is actually the second wave rather than a ‘new event’? If this is the case, the first wave was hidden from us by those who claim to be our guardians who defend our planet from viral attacks.

If this scenario is correct, President Trump can save his energy. Trying to shake off his responsibility by putting the blame on China with the hope that the Chinese may decide to build the wall instead of the Mexicans, is not going to work. The American government may want to invest its energy eliminating some of the widely available information about the American 2017-18 Influenza outbreak.

The current corona virus is certainly a global financial disaster but the Black Plague it isn’t. However, it has been very effective in making us all aware of the danger in modern virology affairs and the possible impact of bioweapons and viral engineering. If there is any significance to the present crisis, it is because the government’s reaction ought to be an immediate criminal investigation. Questions must be raised with the WHO. Where were you in 2018? Why didn’t you warn the world? What prevented you from tagging the American influenza outbreak as a pandemic or epidemic? Was it the $400 million the WHO receives annually from the USA government or maybe it has something to do with the WHO’s intimate relationship with the American pharmaceutical industry.

ORDER IT NOW

I began by asking whether amnesia is a Covid-19 symptom. The answer is a categorical NO. In 2017-18 America was subject to an alarming health situation far more dangerous than the current coronavirus. But not many in America knew about it. It wasn’t a news item. It is not that we forgot, we never knew. We lived through it despite the fact that it was far more severe than the current crisis. And the next necessary question is who decided to make the current crisis into a phantasmic apocalyptic narrative and why? Soon we will know the answer as it clearly backfired.

Maybe your article can get through the thick skulls that inhabit even Unz Review but run rampant through the MSM and Houses of Congress.

Yes, I agree that it is almost certain that the Sars-Cov-2 has been circulating in humans for some time. According to the Molecular Virologists, at least a couple of years and maybe even a couple of decades.

This Pandemic is an orchestrated MSM/Deep State PSYOPS. Which is at least for the short term being quite effective. However, it seems like all Deep State PSYOPS it has a short life span. Also, like many of them the Blowback is gonna be a MuF’er like no one has seen on this Planet… Hopefully, they won’t start a full scale Nuclear Exchange to hide their nefarious deeds.

In 2017, lack of preparedness would have fallen on Barack Hussein, so the Fake Stream Media refused [FSM] to cover it.

In 2020, the FSM decided needed to distract from their failed, seditious Impeachment attempt. Thus, they propagandized the WUHAN-19 pandemic into an apocalyptic narrative, because they thought they could blame the U.S. and Trump.
    ..

The attempt to fabricate myths about WUHAN-19 backfired, as everyone who is not a brain dead SJW Globalist or paid shill sees the obvious anti-U.S. collision between China and the DNC.

As bad as it looks now, it is going to get worse for the DNC if they keep Biden and his personal ties to Chinese elite CCP rulers. (1)

I’d say you’ve got it backwards, Gilad. Our current hysteria and total lock-down is perfectly rational. On the contrary, we need to look at our inexplicable failure to go completely apeshit in 2017-18.

Except that Covid-19 is NOT influenza.

While I am *extremely* skeptical of Gilad’s thesis, and thus definitely on your side in this matter, his article raised one doubt in my mind: did they test influenza patients for the presence of the virus in 2017-2018 or was their diagnosis based purely on symptoms?

    Well said! Good point.

For some time now, we have gotten used to viruses being incubated in the “wet markets” of China, sweeping around the world, causing significant but not actually catastrophic suffering and death, and we just take it in stride.

Why different this time? I’m not sure. Maybe just the random chance of what people decide to scream about, or perhaps, this virus really is that nasty, and the (for now) lower death toll is because of the extreme measures being used to slow its spread. Hard to tell.

Or maybe the elites are using this to cash in. The amount of looting by the super rich in the latest bailouts is beyond stunning. The transfer of wealth from the 99% to the 1% makes Obama’s 2008 sleaze-job look like a tea party. Just saying.

I do suggest however, that this should be a wakeup call. With over ten billion people in this human Petri dish we call the Earth, creating and spreading diseases, we may be past the point where we can just jam everyone into planes and buses etc. and deal with it. Some suggestions:

    1. The “wet markets” in China need to be shut down. Now. We know where most of these pandemic viruses come from, we really can stop (a lot of them). Duh.

    2. I don’t know if this virus really escaped from a. research lab in Wuhan – but – putting research labs with hazardous organisms in the middle of every major city is JUST DAMN STUPID. Research labs studying nasty bugs are essential if we are going one able to fight the bugs, but let’s make sure the cure is not worse than the disease. All these labs need to be moved to remote locations, the technicians should be treated like oil rig workers and paid massive bonuses to put up with quarantines and long stints, and the scientists need to do most of their work remotely.

    3. The eco-nazis keep screaming that cars are evil and mass transit is the future – but – maybe not so fast. Cars are isolated and pandemic-friendly. Subways are breeding grounds for mass pandemics. We might need to rethink, and consider how efficient personal cars might perhaps be a better future choice than jamming ten million people in a city into a giant crowded humid hole in the ground every working day…

One small point: Gilad is getting close to an apples & oranges comparison.
The Covid situation in the US has only really exploded 5 – 6 weeks ago. The 2017-18 flu season was roughly 19 weeks long.
    Naturally, i call
“disgrace” on the authorities, back then, for not making major efforts to encourage people to get vaccinated — & yes, I know vaccination is way short of 100% protective. More like about 40 %; but that 40% still saves lives. (And let’s not forget the US & European, & probably tbe world’s numbers on covid infections AND deaths are an undercount — only question is, how gross is the undercount ?
ie deaths at home or in Care are likely high with covid yet none of these deaths are autopsied etc.)

Important article. Thank you, Gilad! In the 2017-18 flu season, some 61,000 Americans died of a flu virus. Seasonal morbidity to the flu is normal and natural. But healthy individuals are protected by their immune systems.

During the tough flu season of 2017-18, there was no catastrophic, self-administered destruction of the US economy or the American way of life. Mortality rates were slightly higher than normal but life went on.

Even a dumb Jo is now aware of the two party dictatorship with respect to foreign policy, and China has a seriously long historical memory – why would it trust the west? Why would it need the west?! If anything, they have that superiority complex that has caused so much suffering for other nations, in droves.

The Chinese system – a system that manages 1/5th of the world population, blinked for a week, before going for a full on choke hold on the corona-aids thing. Fuuuuuuuuuck – so zombie. Really, who is willing to buy this?!

I am reminded about someone preaching something about log, speck, eye.

West failed cause its leaders gave no shit, they sat in their marbled towers, believing nothing could ever go wrong. It’s easy to do when a trade is going right, and they certainly had a system that was going right – relative to the rest of the world. But conceit is affected by gravity like everything else, and now they have to qualify their arrogance with pointing fingers and lies. It’s tiring, watching humans being human.

    @Corvinus

Here’s my work. I’m not asserting John Hopkins is in scientific error, only there’s a rhetorical flaw at the centre of this argument.

    0. A virus is a non-living thing – just a piece of genetic code wrapped in a shell
    1. Covid is identified and classified by a specific genetic sequence. (though there’s a good article today on ZeroHedge on a scientist mapping many of the variant strains of Covid, each with different lethalities, so Covid itself is not a single/constant genetic sequence)
    2. Influenza is a catch-all category covering a wide variety of viruses of differing genetic sequences (and with varying pathology and effect). The category “Influenza” is constantly updated over time as new “flu’s” (which morph frequently in nature) roll through and their genetic sequences are mapped.
    3. Covid symptoms are similar in respiratory effects to some viruses within the category Influenza
    4. Covid has a genetic sequence somewhat different to previously-identified coronaviruses gathered under the category Influenza. But also, inevitably, sharing some common components.

Ergo -> 5. Covid COULD have been categorised as a new genetic sequence, belonging in it’s effects to the pre-existing group category Influenza. It hasn’t been – for better or worse – (and I’m not saying it should have been) I have no expertise in virology. The fact that wasn’t classified within Influenza has caused a profoundly different reaction in the general public, ie from something the public has some understanding of, to something utterly unknown and alien.

You could argue that the human tendency to relate to Influenza as “oh, it’s the flu” is fundamentally stupid, since different Influenzas have had profoundly different impacts. But that’s human cognitive bias in action right there.

Does it take a genius to figure out that the American 2017-18 influenza outbreak was pretty ‘similar’ to the current Novel Coronavirus epidemic? – Why don’t you do some calculations first? “pretty ‘similar’” is not quantitative. And you knew. You wrote ‘similar’ not similar to cover your ass.

    https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden-averted/2017-2018.htm
“CDC estimates that the burden of illness during the 2017–2018 season was high with an estimated 45 million people getting sick with influenza, 21 million people going to a health care provider, 810,000 hospitalizations, and 61,000 deaths from influenza.”

    Implied IFR=61,000/45,000,000=0.00136

If you apply this IFR to Covid-19 death toll=19,693 in NY you get 19,693/0.00136=14,480,000 which is 73% of population of NY state or if you narrow it to New York city where most fatalities occurred you get prevalence of more than 100% infected. Neither 73% nor 100% are plausible. So no, Covid-19 is not like the flu of 2017-2018. IFR of Covid-19 is much higher than IFR of Flu 2017-2018. How much higher? Most likely between 4 and 8 times higher. If Covid-19 reached the same prevalence in the US as Flu 2017-2018 of 45 million there would be form 240,000 to 480,000 deaths. Is it still pretty similar or pretty ‘similar’ to the flu?

I myself was very ill at the time following a tour in the USA and I can tell you that the NHS in Britain was totally useless in identifying the cause behind my 5 consecutive pneumonias. Will you be surprised to find out that the WHO and Anthony Fauci were then as they are clueless now?

    2. Will it surprise you if we found out that the CDC, the WHO and segments within the American pharmaceutical industry identified already then that which we call now Sars Cov 2 or an early version of that virus however kept quiet about it as they didn’t possess the means to deal with it as they do not have now? Alerting the world would at the time would have led to some humongous losts… The entire Flu vaccination would have collapsed, the world would be locked down due to an ‘American Virus.’ American biolab and biological weapon programs would be subject to scrutiny etc…

It looks to me as if they realised in the last few days that if they keep the demarcation between CV19 and flu, they would be Left with a lot of CV19 death and close to no flu… They are stuck now, they are desperate to get the CV19 death number to justify their early apocalyptic narrative that was based on faulty algorithms (that basically ignored completely what was already known about the CV19 exponential growth rate, the flatting of the curve and the decline) yet to insist that CV19 wasn’t a flu … By doing so they actually empty the flu box, which doesn’t make any sense unless someone explains where and how flu just died out… It is pretty funny.. We really see a criminal intent but zero criminal gift 🙂 This all project is becoming less and less scientific as both Weininger and Heidegger predicted in the early 20th century…

“0. A virus is a non-living thing – just a piece of genetic code wrapped in a shell”

There is debate within the scientific community whether a virus is living or nonliving.

    https://askabiologist.asu.edu/questions/are-viruses-alive

“so Covid itself is not a single/constant genetic sequence…”

Right, because it has mutated into different strains, ones which our body lacks natural immunity.

    Not somewhat different, it’s novel.

  41. Everything in the US is a lie anymore, and the education ystem is a joke. Having been a professional sit in the doctor’s office for the last years of my mother’s life, I can assure you quackery is alive and well. That was over ten years ago when there were still a few curious health practitioners. Now, maybe outside of surgeons, they are trained seals who can’t function without their pharmaceutical protocols and vaccines. Unlike many I don’t see this as a nation state bio-crime. More like criminally insane one worlders who hold useless HIV vaccines and human micro-chipping patents outsourced their devious plan to the Wuhan lab. Most of us cold catchers will shake it off, and naturally flatten the curve. For those unlucky who get the worst version, crimes against humanity need to be filed against all those responsible.

Now if we can only do something about the chronic education idiocy plaguing the American public. Anyone else notice the sudden uptick against home schooling? You must be indoctrinated all you future maggot eaters. Hmm…do the likes of Bill and Melinda Gates own insect futures too?

  42. @dimples

‘Why governments went ape-shit is simple. They were told by their intelligence (sic) agencies that the novel coronavirus was possibly a Chinese bio-engineered virus that escaped from the Wuhan lab, and therefore the possibilities (before anything became solidly known) of serious and out-of-control diseases were terrifying. They aren’t going to tell you that of course.’

That’s an interesting hypothesis. The reaction was noticeably disproportionate to the disease as it panned out.

There are lots of possibilities here, but the one that best fits the available evidence is that something did get out of a Chinese lab — and no one knew just how bad it might turn out to be.

It could also be that the Chinese thought that this was a Western biowarfare attack, and this is why they went apseshit and locked down China.

It could also be both. The Chinese thought it was a Western biowarfare attack, and Western intel agencies advised their governments that it was a Chinese biowarefare attack. This explanation would actually clear things up quite a bit. It would also mean that the next world war is closer than most people think.

In the latter part of 2019 through till recently, I had a shortness of breath that is out of character for me. I put it down to getting very unfit as I’d been exercising less than usual, but every time I tried to get back into moderate exercise I’d wind up gasping for air.

This is long before any reported outbreak on the official timeline, so just anecdotally I’ll not be remotely surprised if we learn a Covid-related virus was circulating much earlier than has been understood.

‘… This is long before any reported outbreak on the official timeline, so just anecdotally I’ll not be remotely surprised if we learn a Covid-related virus was circulating much earlier than has been understood.’

My daughter experienced something similar — and more in line with the usual time-frame, I had a slight fever and a definite rasp in the chest for a few days.

The truth of the matter, however, is that this disease is so impossibly trivial we’d barely notice it happening if we weren’t furiously looking for it.

You know, old, very sick people do tend to die, one way or another. That we find a seasonal virus frequently contributing is hardly startling.

Influenza vaccination is often very ineffective and this lack of efficacy applies all the more so in respect of the elderly.

You must have been living in deep seclusion or are perhaps just too young not to have noticed, that boomers and those beyond are the target of massive flu vaccine campaigns every autumn and winter. Oldies though, have the least to gain and much have to lose, from use of this heavy metal bio-cocktail.

Perhaps the next very really big event will be the lockdown lifting COVID-19 vaccine. This is likely to be effectively mandated, at least for the masses, if they will want to escape indefinite house arrest and unemployment. The vaccine pushers and their multi-billionaire philanthropist/eugenicist backers must be on Cloud 9.

Lastly, the common cold is also a coronavirus infection and for years we have been told that vaccination against it was not practicable due to the rapid mutation of the cold coronavirus. I have to wonder why the same rapidly mutating impracticability doesn’t apply in respect of the COVID-19, vaccine, that’s assuredly coming our way.

It is still all pretty confusing. They just completed random antibody testing in parking lots here in New York and they have found that 14% had antibodies specifically for Covit 19 not for the flu, ( they have a separate test for flu) Indicating that they already had the virus. And they have also found that the virus had been here way earlier then previously thought. I do not know how you can say that CV19 is just a regular flu.

I answered your question on a previous thread. I thought my response was brilliant you never responded accusing me of not having answers. What do you think of what Dickens had to say about Jews?

But I also expect my detractors to be committed to truthfulness as much as I do. I understad such a requierment is pretty impossible for you.

By your own admission I answered #1#,2,#3 truthfully. Your # 4 is not a issue of truthfulness but more of a contextual difference, between your version and my version of the reasons for antisemitism. I took your advice and read your Fagin/Shylock essay. This is where the rubber meets the road on our differences regarding the origins of anti semitism. The metaphor of the chicken and egg. comes to mind. You blame the behavior of the Jews for antisemitism, inherent in their religion and culture, Jewish behavior is a product of supremacy and chosennes in their bible and rituals creating separateness from non Jews. Fagin is the legitimate personification of that hated Jew. I disagree. Jews were dehumanized by the Christain Church and aristocracy during Medieval times. The Jews killed Christ and rejected him as the Demi god Messiah. Jews were viewed as a major threat to the dogma and control of Christianity, therefore Jews had to be dehumanized and objectified like Fagin as evil, greedy and cartoonish disgusting characters. You transfer this character to the modern Jewish organ trafficking criminal.
See the attached article showing that Dickens himself evolved and changed his feelings about Jews and wrote about it. Let me quote Dickens. He agrees with me. You can go back to the thread to see my full answer, but I think Dickens is spot on especially when it comes to your claims about the Jews.

[I]t is not in Christian countries with the Jews as with other peoples. Men say “This is a bad Greek but there are good Greeks. This is a bad Turk but there are good Turks.” Not so with the Jews. Men find the bad among us easily enough — among what peoples are the bad not easily found? — but they take the worst of us as samples of the best, they take the lowest of us as presentations of the highest, and they say “All Jews are alike.”

The fact that its symptoms reputedly resemble other illnesses makes it particularly insidious – it could be everywhere and nowhere, and testing is neither particularly widespread, regular nor foolproof. It would be easy to ignore its impact and equally easy to exaggerate it. I suspect the latter is happening more often.

It may be too early to call just how mutable covid is. It’s certainly too early to make calls on a corona vaccine — should it even exist.
Your linkage of the lifting of the lock down with any vacinne has no basis in reality regardless of the views of a minority. Lock downs will be lifted on the idiosyncratic views of individual governments.

In essence, theses difficulties only arise because the disease is so trivial. If it were serious, these uncertainties wouldn’t exist.

Ironically , what is serious is our response; both in terms of its impact and in terms of what it implies about our culture. The Corona Virus is nothing; our reaction to it is devastating.

Observation from being out in Athens today – although there is still officially lockdown some of the fear is wearing off. Greeks and even Asian tourists were out exercising in a park though in theory this is not allowed, not that many are wearing masks which have not been distributed en masse in the country anyway, and people are not giving a neurotically wide berth to others on the street the way they were doing in March.
