Little Britain star David Walliams has just released his autobiography, cunningly titled Camp David, in which he describes, among other things how his working relationship with Matt Lucas developed and changed over the course of their career.

And to publicise the book, he appeared on the BBC Radio 4 arts programme Front Row, giving a remarkably frank interview in which he describes himself as a better writer than actor, and Matt as the exact opposite.

He told the show’s presenter Mark Lawson: “We’re very different people and probably want different things and had different working methods.”

When questioned about his use of the past tense, and whether that implied the partnership is finished, David continued “Well, it’s over for the time being. Whether it’s over for ever I don’t know. But Matt wanted to go off and do his own thing, he wanted to be himself on a show, he wanted to do ‘The Matt Lucas Awards’ and that’s why at the moment we are not doing things together. Whether we will in the future, I don’t know. I certainly hope so. But for the moment I’m enjoying my freedom.”

He also explained that he hadn’t shown Matt the book before it was published, but felt that anything critical he has to say (which largely boils down to Matt being “lazy”), was more than balanced out by all the positive things he has said, and the lacerating self-criticism, particularly around his struggle with depression, which is something even his own wife hadn’t been fully aware of.
