Make sure you are regularly checking with a leveling tool that the surface of the patio is level. Once the slabs or bricks are in place and level, leave it to set for at least 24 hours. If everything still checks out okay after it settles, then you can fill in the gaps with a concrete mix.

For larger sized retaining walls taller than 3 or 4 feet in height it should be engineered and built by professionals. But if you are thinking of doing a small retaining wall on your property for a cosmetic look or a garden bed then you can try for yourself. It is important to note that when constructing your own retaining wall, necessary safety precautions should be made, if the wall isn't perfectly level to the ground there is a potential it could fall and possibly cause injury. Smaller retaining walls can be built by digging a trench suitable to the size of wall you desire. Next up will be stacking peices of wood, rocks, or bricks.
