biography

b. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. A graduate in journalism from Temple University, Rucker's musical career began by reciting her own poetry at an open mic night at the Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia. Her heartfelt and at once raging and vulnerable

spoken word performances quickly gained her a reputation and she was asked by producer King Britt to contribute her lyrics to his 1994 club classic "Supernatural". This led to her appearance on the Roots' 1995 album, Do You Want More?!!!??! on the track "The Unlocking" in which she describes a woman avenging a gang-rape. Since then, she has worked with a range of respected artists and producers in the dance music field, including 4 Hero, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Josh Wink. Rucker has been described as a leading figure in a trend that has seen women taking a politically conscious and visionary and feminist stance in the sometimes macho world of hip-hop. Her rhythmical poetic delivery is more poetry than rap and is akin to the beat tradition of combining poetry and jazz. Indeed, she has performed at the Montreux International Jazz Festival. Her 2001 debut, Supa Sista received very favourable critical responses and gathered together new material alongside her numerous collaborations with artists such as 4 Hero, Bahmadia, Jazzanova, Tim Motzer, Jonah Sharp, Robert Yancey III, Alexkid and Philip Charles.
