Chiefs win SA league
Kaizer Chiefs fans rally their team
Chiefs are celebrating their first title since 1992

Kaizer Chiefs won their first South African premier league title in 12 years with a 2-0 victory at long-standing rivals Moroka Swallows in Johannesburg.

An early goal by Zambian international Collins Mbesuma and a second from substitute David Radebe near the full-time whistle ensured the end of the long drought for the country's most popular team.

The victory lifted Chiefs to an unmatchable 62 points, eight above second-placed Ajax Cape Town, who also won on Saturday.

"I'm so relieved," said Chiefs' owner Kaizer Motaung.

"This takes a whole load off our shoulders and we dedicate the title to our supporters who have been so patient."

Coached by veteran Romanian-born trainer Ted Dumitru, Chiefs have conceded only 10 goals in 29 league matches this season, and are thus on course for equalling the country's record.

Their last title came in 1992 when the side included a youthful Lucas Radebe, later sold to Leeds United, who was in the crowd on Saturday.

Swallows, whose Nigerian international goalkeeper Greg Etafia was sent off in the first half, play the South African cup final against Manning Rangers in Bloemfontein on 13 June.
