Welcome
to Roman Britain, a site with pages about the 367 years that Britain was
Britannia, a province of the Roman Empire. But there are also pages about my
other interests which include coinage, Egypt, aviation archaeology and the 17th
century diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn. Site last updated on 24 December
2005.

most exciting recent discoveries is a Roman chariot stadium in Colchester. Read

some cannot. They’re all fascinating.

5. EGYPT
The Ramasseum – the Ramasseum (or
Ramesseum), the mortuary temple of the pharaoh Ramesses II, is probably the
finest of all the ruins in Western Thebes. It’s one of my favourite buildings.
I’m constructing a page so you can visit the building too. The page includes a
unique image – I’ve joined two halves of a statue. The top half is in the
British Museum and has been there since 1817. The bottom half is still in the
temple.
5. OTHER INTERESTS
Yes, even I can find Roman Britain a bit
too much. This is me (right) at the age of 5, and my brother, bored rigid after
being taken to see Fishbourne Roman Palace being excavated in the summer of
1963. The mosaic is the famous dolphin and cupid floor prominently displayed at
Fishbourne to this day.
Aircraft – I do also have an interest in
aircraft, especially of the Second World War, and have a pilot’s licence.
Dinosaur - dinosaurs in the
ancient world
I have
written a number of genealogy articles for Your Family Tree magazine and Practical
Family History – you can read the remarkable experience I had with
tracing an eighteenth-century bible owner’s living descendants here: The Bible of Mary
Duck
John Evelyn
(1620-1706)
- savant, diarist, gardener, writer, friend of
Samuel Pepys and co-founder of the Royal Society
Questions – I’m often asked about
my name and other things. I’ve posted some of these here, with the answers.
