Introvoys: Back with a new album in 2005

intro
This just in from guitarist Jonathan Manuel - seems like after years in hibernation, INTROVOYS will be reuniting and are coming back with a new album. The current line up will consist of original members Jonathan Buencamino on vocals, Jayjay Buencamino on keyboards, and Paco Arespacochaga on drums. Added to the lineup are a couple of new members - Jonathan Manuel on guitars and Henry Abesamis on “bass synths” rather than the traditional bass guitar.

The band will be making a single entitled “Desire” available as a downloadable mp3 to members of their yahoogroups for a limited time.

The new lineup has done a few gigs (mall shows at SM North EDSA, Sta. Lucia, etc.) over the holidays, as US-based Paco Arespacochaga was in Manila for a vacation. But after the new album gets put together and released, expect the band to increase its visibility through promotional appearances.

Introvoys was originally formed in 1986 by 3rd-G Cristobal, Paco Arespacochaga, and Jonathan Buencamino. The band did a number of albums in the late 80′ to mid 90’s that have since become pop/rock classics of the era.

We can’t close this news item without reminding our younger readers that long before Bamboo guitarist Ira Cruz had resumed his status as a “teen magazine hottie,” he was the guitarist for Introvoys way back circa 1987 to 1991 (get a clue - see the photo above). Paco Arespacochaga reveals that Cruz had actually rejoined the Introvoys in 2001 - however the reunion took a little longer to put together, so he ended up briefly with Kapatid, and now with Bamboo.

However, Paco notes that, “We never really did kick anyone out so regardless of whether (Ira) joined Passage and Bamboo, we still consider him a brother and have showed our support to him and all his endeavors.”

  1. ‘m a fan of the whole 90’s band explosion thing and i’m glad that INTROVOYS is back.

request lang sana ako ng konting background sa new members and whatever happened to their former guitarist vic and their former bassust whose name escapes me at hte moment.

i'’m looking forward to hear their new recordings.

  3. Maybe i can answer your queries Viktor.

The new members are Jonathan Manuel and Henry Abesamis, former members of SKiN,a band formed by Paco Arespacohaga a few years back.

As you know Paco left INTROVOYS durin the 90s and formed a band-named MYSTERY–of which SKiN was an offshoot of,after a few lineup changes…members of SKiN decided to do other things muna.

Jonathan Manuel was a member of FIRST CIRCLE for a couple of years..now a freelance guitar player for a few bands playin around town.Asides from presently recording with INTROVOYS,he also holds the guitar seat for upcoming rock band SUNBURN–who’s in the course of recording a debut album. Also before his SKiN days,he was a member of the original lineup of the BLUE RATS,playin with them from 95 to 2000.

Henry Abesamis played for a number of bands (before & after SKiN)before settling on SHAMROCK,who just released an indie album late last year.He now juggles playin for SHAMROCK and workin a day job at GMA7.

Both guys are busy compiling and recording material for the new INTROVOYS album.

Word on Vic Carpio is that he is abroad playing with the band NOVIA,where he’s been ever since the last time he played with INTROVOYS.On the reunion, he was supposed to join but logistics couldn’t make it a possibility at the moment.Decisions had to be made, and with the reunion being on hold for too long…the guys decided it was time to go ahead. And so Paco got his old chums from SKiN, and now the reunion is on the go!

Same as above with Ira,Vic will always be a part of Introvoys!cheers!

  4. THANKS FOR THE INFO JON.

I WAS WORKING FOR A PRODUCTION COMPANY IN 98 AND WE HAD AN EVENT IN KAWIT CAVITE. MYSTERY PLAYED AND ROCKED. JOMAR CRUZ WAS THEIR VOCALIST.

    Comment by Manolet — 1/15/2005 @ 4:45 am

  10. i beg to disagree MANOLET pero hindi ang INTROVOYS ang nagsmiula sa band explotion nung 90’s. the credit goes to THE ERASERHEADS. sila and tumadyak sa pinto ng mainstream para makapasok ang mga banda from the underground through their album ULTRAELECTROMAGNETICPOP!

pero hindi ko sinasabing hindi magaling ing introvoys. walang alinlngan na isa sila sa pinaka popular na banda during that era.

    IT’S ONL ROCK N’ ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Noong 1992, nag number 1 ang “however whichway” ng introvoys beating Side A’s “hold on” and HYPE’s “I’ll Wait For You". Syempre, pati mga solo artists tumabi na rin noong mga panahon na ito. Kaya nga biglang napunta sa mga banda ang attention ng mga record labels.

Naabutan ko pa ang Eheads noong front act pa sila ng Introvoys. So akma sa mga sinabi ko, paanong Eheads at hindi introvoys ang nagbukas ng pinto para sa mga banda?

    Rock and Roll lang kaibigan!

  15. i have to admit na introvoys talaga ang nauna sa mainstream pero ano ang naging impact ng ‘BACK TO HE ROOTS” sa underground as comapred sa naging epekto ng ULTRAELECTROMAGNETICPOP sa rock scene? 3 years ung gap in between the release of the albums di ba? anong nangyari sa panahon na yun?

to prove my point i have to qoute mr. eric caruncho, a respected music writer.

“THE ERASERHEADS HAVE OPENED A BREACH INTO THE MAINSTREAM THAT THEIR LESSER KNOWN COMPAƑEROS CAN CRAWL THROUGH”

“NOW THAT THE LINES BETWEEN THE MAINSTREAM AND ALTERNATIVE HAVE BEEN BLURRED BY THE ERASERHEADS CROSSOVER SUCCESS EVERYBODY CAN FINALLY FORGET ABOUT LABELS AND START LISTENUNG TO MUSIC AGAIN".

“THE COMMERCIAL SUCCESS OF ULTRAELECTROMAGNETICPOP!HAS ALREADY HAD A RIPPLE EFFECT ON THE LOCAL MUSIC INDUSTRY TALENT SCOUTS ARE FEVERISHLY SCOUTING METRO MANILA’S CRUDDIEST JOINTS IN THE HOPE OF DISCOVERING THE NEXT ERASERHEADS".

-APRIL 10, 1994 SUNDAY INQUIRER MAGAZINE

isa pang tanong. sino at ilang bands ba from the underground ang na sign sa majors mula ng i-release ang BACK TO THE ROOTS hanggang ULTRA?

i have to admit na isa ang introvoys ang naglagay ng crack sa pinto ng mainstream kasama na ang the dawn pero sa tingin ko e-heads talaga ang nagpasabog sa pinto.

friendly discussion lang po iito mr. manolet. i think the scene needs more passionate peolple like us para bumalik ang dating kapangyarihan ng rakenrol sa music industry.

MORE POWER SA PAGBABALIK NG INTROVOYS.

Comment by CAPT. JOHN MILLER — 1/20/2005 @ 10:16 pm

  17. The first time I got to hear Introvoys was when I bought a copy of “10 of Another Kind” (an 80s OPM rock compilation). Although a lot of the songs there were very good, a slow tune called “Lullabye” stood out among the others. Even though it was relatively simple (I can still play it with the D-A-G-A chords on my guitar), it was nicely-written, nicely-produced, and nicely-played. To me, it had almost the same impact as when I first heard The Dawn’s “Enveloped Ideas” a few years earlier. It sounded foreign. Introvoys eventually banked on its success and released their first album, which I had to buy as well because I wanted to hear more of what the band was capable. [Sidebar: Introvoys also had another song on the “10 of Another Kind” album entitled “Just A Dream". It was a faster pop-rock song which did not make it to their solo album, unlike “Lullabye". To this day, however, I can still sing that song from memory!] The first album produced other hit songs as well, and Introvoys had arrived! With the release of the second album (which I still bought), Introvoys was cemented on the mainstream so much that they had become (seemingly) “baduy". It was as if they were coming out with formulaic songs designed to sell records. But hey! Isn’t that what the record industry is all about? “Baduy” after all, is not such a bad word. When I was a lot younger, I used to think that Juan dela Cruz Band was “baduy” too. A lot of my friends think the Eraserheads were “baduy". But these bands are legends in their own rights. Caruncho is right about the Eheads breaking new grounds (hey!) for underground bands to enter the mainstream. Their effect was extensive, in truth. We, however, cannot deny Introvoys’ place in Philippine (rock) music history.

When I saw them play live at St. Scholastica (with HayP and After Image, I believe), you could see that the crowd of “kolehiyalas” really loved them. I was there for the music. If the rest of the audience were there for something else, I didn’t mind. Jonathan really pulled the crowd in too. To be honest (and I’m sure you’ve heard this before, Jon, no offense meant), Jon doesn’t have the best voice around. But you have to admit, it does have that distinct quality that gives Introvoys a certain identity. And I must say, that night, their playing was flawless.

Decades have passed since I heard Jonathan sing “Hush now, little babe…"; I am now practicing medicine halfway around the world. I still remain committed to the success of Original Pilipino Music. I must wish all of you guys (Jonathan, Paco, Jayjay, Monat, and Henry) the best of luck in this endeavor. Rest assured that I’d still buy your new album (if only to try it; I’ve gotten older and your music may not appeal to me anymore, hehehe) when it comes out.

God bless us all. Mabuhay ang musikang Pilipino!

  18. hey guys!

Thanks for visiting our website. We used to play your songs when we
    were in
high school (1991-1995). Our friends even opened for you in your
    concert in
Davao in 1994. Wow, that was 10 years ago.

“However Which Way” was really the first song that we completed. But
    you can
just imagine how it must have sounded like considering that all of us
    were
just beginning to learn how to play guitar, keyboards, and drums.

Glad to hear that you guys will be back. I miss the type of songs that
    were
played during those days. Although nandyan pa ang “THE DAWN",
    hinahanap-hanap
pa rin namin ang the likes of AFTERIMAGE, ALAMID, ERASERHEADS, YANO,
    and of
course INTROVOYS. We wish you success in your comeback.

As for us, were an indie artist here in Davao, still waiting for the
opportunity to become a big name in the industry. Our carrier single in
    our
indie album released in Manila, Bacolod, and Davao has been played in
    the
local station, but we still have lots of songs that have not been
    recorded. We
dont know anyone in the music industry, and we dont have any idea on
    the
processes involved in achieving our dreams. Furthermore, we are
    geographically
far from the music industry hub, which makes it quite difficult for us
    to be
noticed. But anyway, whats important is that we still continue to play
    and
make music because we love doing it.

Congratulations on your upcoming comeback. May you have more songs to
    come.
Hope to see you in Davao, and if given the opportunity, maka-Front Act
    sana
    kami sa inyo. Best regards.

  38. just a little info, Intovoys was actually founded by 3rd-G Cristobal and yours truly. At that time, 3rd-G and I were having a conversation about starting a band. Paco overheard the conversation and wanted in, so we had 3 people. Around the same time, Paco introduced to us his cousin Jonathan Buencamino and later Jonathan’s brother Jay2 along with Jobert Buencamino their cousin. So that’s how it all began. It’s funny how come they never mention my name when it comes to the founders of the band.
