WinFS is Sweet

We got some great insight into the workings of WinFS yesterday at Roger Lueder's TechEd  talk: Building on WinFS: Developing a Great WinFS App from Scratch.

To say that Roger is passionate about WinFS would be an understatement, in fact several members of Microsoft’s WinFS Team were there and all of them have this look in their eye and their feet don’t touch the ground.

With WinFS you can organize, categorize and find all of your stuff. A rational databace on your desktop with all the power of a real time Business Intelligence application when incorporated with Web Services and a network connection.

There’s more when you realize the power of XAML and the Windows Presentation Foundation, WOW!

Need to organize your wine collection? I have more empty bottles then full but just think of the possibilities.......

Personally, I think this is a much, much bigger deal than the services disruption - if they get it right, and I really hope they do.
Not that I have any insight into what is right. It is incredibly complicated, and the crucial part, that it fosters emerging standard domain data, or at least interoperable domain data in a somewhat native environment, is hard to know ahead of time. Lot of promising technologies have wilted when their actual use in the field compromised their theoretical possibilities, but I have a sense that the level of abstraction here is right.
