Luminator

Below are various examples and explanations of the Luminator signs.

LIDS

This is a character based sign. 15 5x7 characters. All characters are 5x7. Can only display upper and lower case letters. Cannot display graphics. Destination was usually centered automatically. These signs were lit by a fluorescent tube from the top. Sign assembly had to be opened from the rear, and the modules removed to replace the tube. Multi-line displays changed from left to right, with a blank between the last line and the beginning. The blanking was programmable, so some signs may not blank between the last and first line.

MAX

This is a character based sign. 15 5x7 characters. On the earlier MAX signs, all characters wee 5x7. Later proportional lettering was done by the controller automatically. Can only display upper and lower case letters. Cannot display graphics. Destination was usually centered automatically. These signs were lit by a fluorescent tube from the bottom. Sign assembly had to be opened from the rear  to replace the tube. Multi-line displays changed from left to right, with a blank between the last line and the beginning. The blanking was programmable, so some signs may not blank between the last and first line.

MAX Rear Sign

These were character based, 4 characters of 5x7. This sign was used for the MAX and Super:MAX systems. These signs were fluorescent lit.

Super:MAX

These signs consisted of a 8" 3 character route sign (8x14) and a 15 character MAX sign for the destination, These signs were capable of displaying upper and lower case proportional letters on the MAX sign. Multi-line displays changed from left to right, with a blank between the last line and the beginning. The blanking was programmable, so some signs may not blank between the last and first line. The route number usually did not blank. These signs were fluorescent lit.

Super:MAX Side Sign

Some systems used the Super:MAX side sign, others just used the regular 15 character MAX side sign. These signs were fluorescent lit.

Matrix:MAX

The Matrix:MAX was Luminator's first matrix-based sign. It was 7x90 dots, could display bold lettering (uppercase only) and/or narrow proportional lettering. Could also display graphics. The blanking was programmable, so some signs may not blank between the last and first line. The Matrix:MAX replaced the MAX sign and was ADA compliant. These signs were fluorescent lit.

Super Matrix:MAX

This was a matrix version of the Super:MAX and was also ADA complaint. This system replaced the Super:MAX. Same features as the Matrix:MAX. These signs were fluorescent lit.

Mega:MAX

This was an enlarged version of the Matrix:MAX, now 16x112 dots. Capable of displaying bold uppercase and/or narrow upper and lower case proportional lettering. Could also display graphics. Could also display up to 2 lines of information. The blanking is programmable, so some signs may blank and some may not. These signs were lit by two fluorescent tubes at the bottom. This sign was also available in a smaller version, still 16x112, but known as the Mini Mega:MAX. The side signs were still 7x90,the same as the Matrix:MAX side signs. The front could display all of the info, but the side would have to have multiple lines for the same info.

MAX2000/MAX3000

The MAX2000 was basically the Mega:MAX with the fluorescent lighting eliminated. A simpler design and now each dot was lit by it's own LED. During the day they look the same, but at night they have kind of a green glow from the LED lighting. The MAX 2000 was replaced with the MAX3000, siting an improved design. These signs were also available in the smaller version. The side signs were still 7x90, but LED lit.

Horizon

The Horizon series is 100% Amber LED. They are available in various sizes, including 16x120, 16x140 and 16x160. 16x160 being the most popular. These are also available in smaller sizes for side signs. These could display up to two lines, bold upper case and/or narrow upper and lower case lettering, as well as graphics. The blanking, again is programmable. In 2004, these signs now can display 3 dot-wide lettering and bold (2-dot wide) lower case lettering (an update in the software program).

Horizon Rear Sign

The display size is 16x48. Could also display two lines of smaller lettering.

Part-Color

These signs are capable of displaying over 25 different colors for the route number, with an amber LED destination. The color part is made up RGB (red/green/blue) LED's. Various colors are achieved by the mixture of intensity of each color. For example, purple (red & blue), yellow (red & green, and white (all three colors). These are 16x148. These have the same capabilities as the Horizon.

Full-Color

These signs are full-color signs, using the same RGB LED's as above, with the same color capabilities, but for the whole sign. A full-color side (8x96), rear (16x48) and dash (14x32) sign is also now available. These have the same capabilities as the Horizon.

LCD Matrix:MAX

The LCD Matrix:MAX is the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) version of the Matrix:MAX. These signs are lit by a fluorescent tube inside. They display black characters on a yellow background. The signs are character based, so cannot display graphics. These signs can display narrow or bold upper case lettering.
