The two mainstream candidates for governor, Republican Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey and Democrat Deval Patrick, have offered voters starkly different approaches to mainstream candidates for governor, Republican Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey and Democrat Deval Patrick, have offered voters starkly different approaches to
how they would govern the Commonwealth if elected.

This election comes at a crucial time in the state¹s history as the cost of living continues to rise, more people are leaving Massachusetts than coming in, and crime is up and the quality of public education seems to be going
down.

In addition, voters must realize that all taxpayers - workers, homeowners and businessowners ‹ are footing an increasingly growing bill to pay to educate, care for and sometimes house illegal immigrants. Massachusetts is at a crossroads and needs a strong leader to help put the Commonwealth back on the right track to prosperity, public safety and excellence in education.

That¹s why we¹re endorsing Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey for governor. Healey understands that people ‹-mostly highly educated and well-trained young professionals- are leaving Massachusetts because it is simply too expensive to live here.

The only way to reverse that trend is to cut taxes - including rolling back the income tax ‹ significantly cut state government spending and eliminate or lessen the seemingly endless pile of rules, regulations and fees that
make it so expensive to run a business in the Commonwealth. Healey supports all these measures.

Patrick, on the other hand, seems to think we can simply spend our way back to prosperity.

He is against rolling back the state income tax and calls for hundreds of millions of ³investments² to help solve the state¹s problems. What Patrick doesn¹t seem to realize is many of the state¹s problems have been caused by overspending, overtaxing and an unwillingness by state officials to take on the special interests - like the teacher¹s unions -that he has embraced.

Patrick has called for full-day kindergarten and longer school days, but he must know the teacher¹s unions that support him will fight these reforms every step of the way.

Likewise, Healey supports the creation of more public charter schools, something Patrick has opposed, again because the teacher¹s unions have done the same.

Too many of the public schools in Massachusetts are not working. We need to do whatever is necessary to encourage, support and pay for new ways to teach our children.

Healey also opposes giving in-state tuition rates to the children of illegal immigrants and giving them driver¹s licenses.

Patrick supports both measures.

And lastly, we support Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey for governor because she is on the side of the victims of crime, not on the side of the convicts, as Patrick has too often been in his career.

It¹s stunning that Patrick still says he is ³proud² of his decision to support convicted Leominster rapist Ben LaGuer, who raped and beat an elderly Leominster woman for hours.

Despite what many of his supporters have said, Patrick had no legal standing in the LaGuer case.

He simply decided to support a convicted rapist who he had not even met because he assumed the police and Worcester County jury had been influenced by race when they arrested and then convicted LaGuer.

It turns out he was dead wrong, which he has now admitted, but Patrick has never said he was wrong to get involved with the sexual predator, and that troubles us.

The choice for governor could not be clearer.

If you want to elect a governor who will raise taxes, raise spending, defend the status quo in education and be soft on crime: Deval Patrick is your man. If instead, you want to elect a governor who will cut taxes, cut state
spending, fight to keep our streets safe and criminals behind bars and improve our public education system, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey is the right choice for you.

When you head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7, we urge you to vote for Kerry Healey for governor.
