Beastie Boys

Eligible in: 2007 (The 2008 Induction Ceremony)

While the Beastie Boys are technically eligible for the Rock Hall in 2007, based on the release of the Pollywog Stew EP in '82, it doesn't seem likely the nominating committee will recognize them until 25 years after Licensed to Ill in 2011. The Rock Hall would also take some major heat if the first rappers inducted into the Hall weren't one of the true pioneers, such as Grandmaster Flash.

Will Beastie Boys be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
Remember, "innovation and influence" are critical factors.

Why doesn't the HALL put in Grandmaster or whoever so they don't take "Heat" and then put Beastie Boys in? The Boys have a massive cult following so don't piss us off. PUT THEM IN.

While I only managed to grasp the slightest sign of rational thought in that post, I will respond to what I (unfortunately) could comprehend.

rocknroll does not equal sex. Rock n Roll is a musical expression of life, basically, not anymore though, sadly. But back when the whole Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly style rock n roll was wearing off, and 60's pyschedelic rock was becoming prominent. IE: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Beatles, The Doors, Janis Joplin. You know, the hippy bands. Rock wasnt just MUSIC anymore, it was more like thought, and poetic expression, best example is Hendrix's "Axis:Bold as Love" or Dylans "Highway 61 Revisited" or Sgt Peppers. Hendrix delved into physcedelia, Dylan sank into surrealism and The Beatles fell into.......lucyintheskywithdiamonds......ism.

Rock n roll is much more than just music. And Nirvana is regarded as grunge, not rock. And the Beastie Boys other than having a horribly lame name, suck, and are not rock n roll. Period.

beastie boys have as much influence in rock music as they do rap. beasties are revolutionaries and have never lost enthusiasm for what they do. viva la beastie boys.

Um, the beastie boys have right to be on here, if you want to criticize rap do it on the jay-z center or something

Beastie Boys did influence rock, just listen to Beck, they deserve to be on here. so now all we have to do is wait...

The Beastie Boys were one of the greatest white rap groups of all time so why not. They're taleneted and good at what they do.

The Beastie Boys will be a shoe-in (After Run-DMC and possibly Grandmaster Flash) as one of the first rap artists inducted. Their first 2 albums were incredible, but that would not have been enough; thier clincher was in '94 when they reinvented themselves to appeal to 'alt-rock' fans. In fact, 'Ill Communication' straddles so perfectly between classic rock and rhymes that it put the Beasties in a category all thier own.

The Beastie Boys can't be limited to the "white" category or the "rap" category. Look at their contributions to music in general. And if some purist wants to insist that true rock & roll is obnoxious music that your parents would hate, they covered that base with their first platinum album. Sadly, I don't think that Grandmaster Flash or the Sugarhill Gang will get the first Hall of Fame nod, despite their contributions.

lets pretend the only thing the beastie boys ever recorded was 'license to ill' with the single 'fight for your right'. i think they would belong in the RRHOF because of the influence that rock single had on countless kids (who formed bands whose music i do not like, but thats not the point) who bought the record and listened to the rest of the tracks and then owned what was by and large a "rap record". i was one of these kids. and we never would have bought a GM flash or sugarhill gang record... ever. im not saying GM Flash doesnt have a place in the RRHOF. he does and its next to robert johnson as an 'early influence'. unfortunately the early influences catagory seems to end at 1950. apparently the idea that any other form of music has influenced rock since 1950 is silly to the museums board. instead what they have done is move these influences into the main catagory... like bob marley and miles davis with the purpose of selling tickets. they dont belong there. they both had a huge impact on rock but they werent rock musicans. i love both of them as much as anyone but its wrong. and this is not a racist statement. jimi hendrix, sly stone, james jamerson, yes yes yes.

the larger issue is the politics of the museum nominating commitee which saw fit to put eric clapton in three times and the beatles a total of seven. granted their contributions are enormous... but the fact that the board is unable to control their love/lust long enough to give one of those spots to someone else is unfortunate. and i love EC and the beatles. it seems unlikely that the board will overcome their own predilections and acknowledge the contribution of the BBs. but they have sold a hell of lot of records and money talks, so its possible.

regarding Ian on Sunday, 07.30.06... if you think for second that nirvana arent going in the very second it's possible you have been deluded my friend. someone says the word nirvana and the museum board hears a cash register.

To whoever said something about Ill Communication being a turning point or whatever... listen to Check Your Head (which came out in 1992). There's about 4 true hip-hop songs on the whole thing. The three of them play instruments, they began as a punk band, they get airplay on rock radio, their influence on rock music is vast, etc. Adam Yauch is an awesome and underrated bassist. If you're reading this but you're not a huge fan and want to find out more listen to (download) the following: Futterman's Rule, Gratitude, Believe Me, Heart Attack Man, Time For Livin', In 3's, Live at PJ's, Remote Control, I Don't Know. There's more music they've done that one could classify as rock, but these are some highlights IMO.

Like the above post suggests, the Beastie Boys are more then just rappers. Not that it's huge credibility, but I took a course called "History of Rock" at the University of Texas. At it's core, you cannot have Rock 'n Roll without the influence of African beats, which would eventually progress into more structured (yet adlib) styles such as jazz. Simplified, the "mid" notes (notes rarely heard in music of any generation) would pave the way for rock and roll. Thus, if you considered the Beastie Boys as just a hip hop group (which you would do if you only knew them in the '90's), then they should be considered. BUT, if you knew anything about the B-Boys, then you would know that they actually started out as a Hard Punk group. Though they weren't inovators in this genre, they were popular among the underground. And once hip hop started up (which actually had it's first public appearences in CBGB), punks such as the B-Boys picked it up and ran with it.

Thus, historically the Beastie Boys truly did innovate music. They should be considered more then just "white rappers", but rather 3 Jewish kids who changed the faced of music by popularizing it and making it accessible to all audiences.

rap= eww. if youre going to induct rappers you might as well induct country singers. their music is more similar to rock than rap is. but then what about ROCK? this is the ROCK hall of fame, and it should stay that way. yet many deserving ROCK groups never get inducted! i'm tired of hearing about what a wonderful thing rap is. it takes a very minimal degree of talent. if you wanna know good music, try hendrix, zeppelin, the police, etc.

I'd actually say rap is harder to perform than rock. It's possible for a guitar player or singer to coast on natural talent and not work very hard (although that's not reccomended) but no one becomes a good rapper without thousands of hours of practice. Flow, rhythm, and a good poetic sense are skills that have to be learned; you aren't born with them.

or are you?

Posted by aquemini on Monday, 01.1.07 @ 23:58pm

I hope they put rap and country in soon, and if Grandmaster Flash gets in one rap artist should every year after that, the first after him being these awesome Jewish kids. Willie Nelson isn't in? I'm not a country fan at all but come on! It doesn't matter if the Beastie Boys are RnR or not... if you're a great musician with a lot of influence you deserve a spot in the hall. Sorry this is my first post btw so don't hurt me.

They mix rap and rock on some songs( sabotage for instance) so you should let em in. I listen to classic rock as well as old school rap. They deserve the same respect as Jimi hendrix and The Beatles. I mean, they were a part of the early hardcore punk scene, and they influenced a lot of rock groups, so let em in...
