1. What is a Plug-in?
A plug-in is an application that integrates into your Internet browser, providing additional features and functions. Many plug-ins are available, for example Flash, Shockwave, Real Player and Apple QuickTime are available as media enhancement plug-ins, while Adobe Acrobat allows you to view PDF documents in your browser.

2. What is TrustToolbar Plug-in?
TrustToolbar Plug-in is a software application that provides additional navigability, security and trust functionality to your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. It is so called because it helps create a trusted Internet environment using a toolbar (and underlying technology), and because it 'plugs in' to your browser. Once installed your browser is enhanced to provide a secure interface that makes your surfing easier and transactions safer.

TrustToolbar has been developed to translate the physical world intellectual property rights (IPR) to the online world. IPR have existing for decades in the physical world protecting such rights as trademarks, brand names, company names, product names, etc. You may not even realise it, but we all rely on and use IPR every day of our lives. Every time we look in the yellow pages, or see an advert on television we are being exposed to an infrastructure that is protected by IPR.

TrustToolbar not only helps companies protect the use of their IPR online, but also allows you to make use of the system to make your Internet experience simple! URLs and the domain name system are technical identifiers that were not designed for the commercial world they now support. TrustToolbar sits on top of the domain name system and allows you to use the same physical world information to navigate the Internet that you would use to locate a shop in the high street or yellow pages. For example, instead of having to use over complex URLs, simply navigate the Internet using:

Brands and Trademarks
Company and / or product brand names owned by the entity behind the website. For example, Comodo, TrustToolbar, E-Sigil, Coco-Cola, Microsoft, IBM...

Company Name (Legal Name)
The legally incorporated company name of the entity behind the website. For example Comodo Ltd, Microsoft Corp, Abbey National plc...

Addresses
The address at which the entity behind the website operates.

Telephone / fax numbers
The telephone / fax number of the entity behind the website.

Postal / Zip Codes
The postal / zip code of the entity behind the website.

Keywords
Keywords relating to products, product areas or industry areas. For example, security, software (or combined to search for 'security software')

Company registration numbers
Each company is provided with a registration number at time of incorporation by its respective Government industry body, e.g. Companies House in the UK.

All the above identifiers may be used to locate one (or more) of the websites associated with the company.

3. Why should I use TrustToolbar?
TrustToolbar offers a unique features that:

Simplifies the way you navigate the web:
No need to use domain names and URLs to navigate - they are confusing, technical and unnecessary. Computers and the Internet should make our lives simpler, not more complex!

Provides you with the critical information you really need about a website:
When you go into a physical shop you take for granted that you know who they are, where they are, and who to contact if something goes wrong. The Internet in its current state does not provide this level of visibility, as all we see are pixels on our screens. TrustToolbar tells us everything we need to know about a website by identifying and providing a wealth of information on the company behind the website.

TrustToolbar provides you with the visibility in the online world that we long experienced in the virtual world.
Just like you expect to see a shop sign above the door telling you who the shop is, TrustToolbar displays who the website is 'above' its virtual door!

Creates a safer online shopping experience by providing security and protection against fraudsters:
By providing you with the identity of the company behind the website, you know who you are dealing with! TrustToolbar provides you with a wealth of additional defences against typical attacks that may be mounted by fraudsters.

Gives you added confidence when shopping online:
Not only does TrustToolbar identify who is behind a website but also displays the methods of card payment the website has been authorised to accept by the card payment issuer, for example Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Discover, JCB, Diners Club. Display of such payment logos are always displayed in the same place on TrustToolbar - just like in the physical world where the shop must display the payment logos in certain standard places.

Your screen will temporarily be blanked apart from TrustToolbar. Completing this will highlight its location to you.

11. What can I do with TrustToolbar?
TrustToolbar offers two primary functions:

15. What does TrustToolbar tell me about a web site?
TrustToolbar provides the critical information about a website that is required for the creation of a trusted Internet environment. It is this information that enables you to have confidence with whom you are dealing. TrustToolbar gives you direct access to the following information about the website you are currently on:

  • The legal name of the company behind the website
  • The company logo (if registered)
  • The country in which the company operates
  • Your true, current URL
  • The payment methods the company has been authorised to accept online
  • Terms and conditions of the website
  • Privacy Statement of the website
  • Business description of the website
  • The address of the company behind the website
  • The contact details of the company behind the website
  • The registration number of the company behind the website (availability of registration numbers vary dependent on country of incorporation)

All the above represent the information about a company that is available and taken for granted in the physical world. By providing easy access to such information, TrustToolbar ensures you have the confidence to use the Internet commercially.

16. Why do some websites have logos and others do not?
Whether or not a website displays a logo is dependent on the service level they have adopted for the TrustToolbar system. The number of logos we see on TrustToolbar is expected to increase substantially as the rollout of the system becomes more widespread.

17. How does TrustToolbar provide protection and security against fraudsters?
TrustToolbar identifies the commercial entity behind a website. Every TrustToolbar registered website is validated using a number of different due diligence processes prior to being issued a TrustToolbar Certificate - the Certificate contains the information displayed by TrustToolbar. As a result TrustToolbar informs you when you are browsing the website of a validated legal entity by displaying the legal name.

Fraudulent websites will not pass the validation process. As a result, only legitimate websites will display a legal name.

18. Where can I use TrustToolbar?
Over 5 million commercial websites may be searched for by simply typing a company's name. The commercial directory also contains over 10,000 of the biggest global brands. When you type brands you will be directly navigated to the brand owner's website. TrustToolbar also identifies the company behind 15 million of commercial websites. In particular over 97% of the UKs publicly listed companies are already entered into the system and may be navigated to using their company names.

19. How much will using TrustToolbar cost me?
The TrustToolbar Plug-in is free to end users now, and will remain free. Use of the Plug-in is also free to end users - there are no hidden costs.

20. Why do I need to provide my email address, name and country when I download the TrustToolbar Plug-in?
Your name and email address may be used to keep you updated of the latest advancements in TrustToolbar technology, product news and special announcements relevant to TrustToolbar. We ask for your country in order to provide you with search results relevant to your country. Your email address is not provided to third parties - your personal privacy is of paramount importance to us. Please read our corporate Privacy Policy statement for more details.

21. Will TrustToolbar affect my privacy when I surf the web?
No. Your privacy is of utmost importance to us, as a result all TrustToolbar users are anonymous. The system is based on http (to allow corporate users to use TrustToolbar through firewalls without making any changes to firewall configuration), as a result an IP address will be recorded by our web servers when you use the TrustToolbar system. However this address is only recorded in order to provide your TrustToolbar application with the website assurance information for each website you surf. IP addresses are not linked in any way to personally identifiable information.

TrustToolbar does not use cookies or any other means of identifying you when you surf the web. Your email address and other personal information are not connected in any way to your TrustToolbar application. For more details on the TrustToolbar personal privacy policy, please refer to our corporate Privacy Policy statement.

22. Is it true that using TrustToolbar is a substantial improvement in usability to just using domain names?
Yes! Domain names are technical names used by computers to locate each other over the Internet. We should remember the following about domain names:

  • There are so many of them!
  • We are expected to remember and use dozens of top level domains such as: .com .net .org .biz .info .name
  • As well as over 200 country specific top level domains such as: .uk .ca .se .au .de
  • Additional top level domains are being introduced all the time! Now, what was the domain name of the site for that high street company again?

Remember that there is no assurance that the human readable bit of the domain name, such as 'comodo' in comodo.net really is a company. Anybody can register a domain name using any name they wish! This is why 'cyber squatting' (or the registration of a company / brand name with the sole intention of selling to the rightful owner) is such big business! To get around this many companies use domain names that seem to make little sense to customers. It's something else to remember about a company!

With TrustToolbar there is no need to worry about whether the website is a dot com or a dot biz, or even how they use their company name in their domain name (if at all they do!) Simply enter the company name as you know it, or even the brand name or trademarks you see used in the marketing efforts made in the physical world such as press, television and radio.

If other words, simply use the Internet in the same way that you use a yellow pages, or directory service - use the information you know to navigate the Internet. TrustToolbar let's you use common sense to keep your Internet experience simpler and more productive.

23. How is TrustToolbar different than existing alternatives to domain names?
Existing alternatives to using domain names, such as Keywords by Realnames and CommonName provide little advantage over the existing domain name system. In the same way that anyone can register any domain name, anyone can register any Realname or CommonName. As a result, the current problems associated with cyber squatting still remain, except now it is possible to cyber squat on entire industries as well as just companies.

For example, entering a Realname or CommonName will take you to the website that has registered that Realname or CommonName. It does not necessarily mean that the website is legally entitled to use that name, it just means that they have purchased it.

For this, and many more problems associated with these 'alternative domain name systems' please refer to the Comodo article "Domain Name Deja Vu - Why the 'Keywords' monopoly is flawed" located at http://www.comodogroup.com/support/learning/keywords_flaws.html

TrustToolbar on the other hand is based on the established physical world infrastructure referred to as Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). IPR protects misuse of companies property such as company names, brand names and trademarks. In essence, TrustToolbar translates the naming system we have long established in the physical world online!

24. How can I learn to use in detail the numerous options and features of TrustToolbar?
All features and how to use them are documented in detail in the TrustToolbar User Guide. Right click and 'save as' the below link to download the user guide:

User Guide PDF (requires Acrobat Reader) - Right click, select 'save as'

25. Will TrustToolbar work from within my corporate firewall?
Yes. TrustToolbar uses http - the protocol you use to browse the Internet. As a result it will operate through your corporate firewall so long as it is configured to allow standard web browsing.

26. Does TrustToolbar operate offline?
TrustToolbar is designed to provide you with information on websites as you surf the web. When you are offline you will not be able to surf the web. You will notice that your browser window reverts to standard Windows explorer window when you are browsing either local file systems or if you are offline.

27. Why should I trust what I see on TrustToolbar?
In order for any company information to be displayed on TrustToolbar, it must be digitally signed by the Comodo Certification Authority (CA). Prior to the signing of such information, the CA validates the information using a number of internal verification processes and external official databases (Companies House, Dun & Bradstreet, etc). Only when the CA is confident that the company information is authentic, valid and accurate will it be signed. The signing process results in a TrustToolbar Digital Certificate - the only data type that TrustToolbar will display. The practices and policies of certificate issuance are stated in the Comodo Certification Practice Statement available at http://www.comodogroup.com/repository

28. How do I uninstall TrustToolbar?
To uninstall TrustToolbar Plug-in:

  1. Click the Windows Start Button, and then click the Settings menu. Select the Control Panel from the Settings menu.
  2. When the Control Panel has opened, select and open Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Locate TrustToolbar from the list and click Remove.

TrustToolbar Plug-in and its components will then be removed automatically.

29. I have more questions, who do I contact?
You may contact the TrustToolbar support team by completing the support form - be sure to complete the form in as much detail as possible so that we may fully answer your queries.

30. Why are some website policy documents unregistered?
By and large, it is up to the website to register their online policy documents (Privacy Statement, Terms and Conditions) for inclusion within the TrustToolbar system. As more and more companies register their documents, TrustToolbar will be able to offer increased standardisation.

31. The company I want has many addresses, which is the address displayed in Site Credentials?
The company address displayed in Site Credentials is either the company's legally incorporated registered address or in some cases, it may be the company's legally incorporated trading address.

33. What is the Adult Content filter facilty?
TrustToolbar uses a number of third party search engines to provide results for commercial Keywords searches. These search engines may contain results containing adult content. If the adult content filter option is activated, the results will be filtered prior to being displayed. Please note that as these results are provided by third parties we cannot guarantee that they will be fully filtered.
