More On New Bruce Springsteen Album: Producer Brendan O’Brien Reveals All

Photo: Bruce

Late last year Bruce Springsteen invited producer Brendan O’Brien up to his New Jersey house to play him a batch of new songs he had been working on. “It was kind of surreal,” says O’Brien, who previously worked with Springsteen on 2002’s The Rising and 2005’s Devils and Dust. “We literally sat in his living room, he hands me a book of lyrics and he played me the songs on the guitar.” O’Brien then had the unenviable task of telling Bruce which songs worked, and which ones didn’t. “He gauges peoples reactions and I have to be as honest with him as I can,” O’Brien says. “Some of them had a certain voice that seemed to fit all together – and some didn’t have that same voice – so we decided which ones to pursue.” The songs that survived were taken down to Atlanta’s Southern Tracks Studios this March by O’Brien, Springsteen and the E Street Band. The resulting album, Magic, was recorded in eight weeks, and will be released on October 2nd.

The lead single will be “Radio Nowhere,” which O’Brien says changed very little from the version Springsteen played him at his house last year. “It’s a pretty straight-ahead rocker,” O’Brien says. “The most straightforward song I’ve heard him do in years.” “Long Walk Home,” which Springsteen debuted on tour last year with the Seeger Sessions Band, is an emotionally uplifting ballad that invokes 2002’s “My City In Ruins.” “That’s one of my favorite songs that he’s done in a long time,” says O’Brien. “It’s mournful, but also hopeful. It has very introspective verses and then he opens up lyrically as the song progresses. It hits me in a real great spot.” O’Brien describes the song “Living In The Future” as a “throwback to ‘Hungry Heart,’ an R&B thing.”

Recording with the E Street Band proved to be a logistical challenge, largely due to the fact that drummer Max Weinberg had to tape “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” during the week. Springsteen devoted weekdays to overdubbing and cutting vocal tracks, but each weekend a core group of E Streeters – Springsteen, Weinberg, bassist Gary Tallent and pianist Roy Bittan – would record the instrumental tracks. The other members of the E Street Band, including keyboard player Danny Federici and guitarists Steven Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, were called in as needed to cut their parts. “It’s easier to manage the songs with less people,” O’Brien says. “Once we know what we’re doing, we brought the others in to do overdubs.”

But Springsteen insisted on being in the studio when Clarence Clemons cut his saxophone parts. “I appointed Bruce ‘senior vice president in charge of Clarence’s saxophone,’ ” O’Brien says. “There’s a whole dynamic there that spans decades. I don’t even get in the middle of it. I’m just a cheerleader.”

A world tour with the E Street Band will kick off right around the time Magic comes out, but no details have been released. “There’s songs that when we were recording them he would go, ‘I just know this song’s going to work great live,’ ” says O’Brien. “When it comes to being a bandleader and knowing what his audience wants, I think he’s one of the best ever.”

For more on Springsteen’s “Magic,” read Rolling Stone’s exclusive interview with manager Jon Landau here.

When you buy the new album you may not like some songs but with Bruce songs you need to go back and rediscover them after a period time e.g. Backstreets missed the point of it at first then saw it done in concert and found i could relate to it.It took on a new meaning for me and this is what i have found with other Bruce songs.
There are other artistes out there that do this but not many.

JOSE MANUEL | 8/29/2007, 6:26 am EST

Good to hear that there are a lot of new or very young fans (15,17, 19 years old) that means that his legacy will be carried on. I’m just 33 and listening Bruce since I was 14 and still has the same effect : it makes me alive and something to look forward to : a new album and concert. Guys : ENJOY BRUCE AND THE BAND. one of the last TRUE and HONEST things nowadays in live. ” and if I should fall behind please wait for me…”

Kyla | 8/28/2007, 3:56 pm EST

I am 15 and my dad is a huge bruce springsteen fan. i’ve been listening to him since i was born. but i kid you not, the man changed my life when i heard “dancing in the dark”. and that’s when i really got into him. music has gone to the dogs, and its great to be able to listen to some real music even when everyone else around you thinks its a weird genre.

BRUUUUUUCE. i’m so excited to get to live to see a bruce concert! rock on, and peace!

Michigan | 8/27/2007, 8:03 pm EST

It’s good to hear that new stuff is forthcoming. The world needs more bands like Bruce and the Stones and The Who. I am 37 and I say age is irrelevant in music. I think the aforementioned bands have stood the test of time and only time will tell how many of the newer bands will be able to do the same. Some earlier posts were commenting on the cover, what relevance does the cover have? Born In The USA had Bruce’s ass on it, I just over looked that, I don’t listen to music because of the cover picture. The spice girls are hot looking, but I don’t have any of their CD’s!!!

Hannah | 8/26/2007, 6:38 pm EST

well I am only 17 and I’ve been a HUGE Bruce fan since well I was born!! and I can NOT wait until this album hits the shelves I will be the first in line to pick it up! but I can only hope that I get to see the one and only boss perform it live because there is no doubt in my mind that he performs the BEST live!!!!

Sean | 8/26/2007, 12:23 pm EST

Well im 19 and a fairly new fan of the Bosses music, but this guy is a an absolute legend of rock and roll music. Hes done it all and has nothing else to prove, however that wont stop me buying the new album as soon as it hits the shelves. plus im envious of anyone whos seen Bruce Live!!

iDohalot | 8/26/2007, 12:54 am EST

Yay, great news indeed… the Boss is back. Time to rock! I hope he shows off some of his hidden lead guitar talent this time around. Oh, and to those who says he is old and that he should retire: Get lost. Bruce is like fine wine. Gets better as time goes by. Besides Bruce, only Bob Dylan and Neil Young can do this and get away with it. Bruce - a true rock’n'roll hero, I hope he’ll continue to make music for ages yet. Go Bruuuuce!

Edgar Villanueva | 8/26/2007, 12:37 am EST

Bruce and The E Street, the best of all times, thank you bruce and the boys for making this music i will be glad to come to one of his concerts ,come to New Mexico;please!!!!

With the new record, can we maybe give Bruce the cover next month instead of the recent flavors of the minute?

It’s about time.

Cannon | 8/24/2007, 11:10 pm EST

The best rock n roll band ever. period.

Alexw | 8/24/2007, 10:52 pm EST

Slightly disappointing that all the band couldn’t get together at the same time on the new record- hopefully this won’t show through.

However it will be amazing to see Bruce live with the E-Street Band once more-voice/ energy/ atmosphere better than ever on the last E-Street tour.

Karen | 8/24/2007, 8:31 pm EST

When I was in eigth grade I went to my first concert which happened to be a Springsteen concert. My brother bought the tickets for my birthday. Best present I ever got until this day. Bruce stood on my and my friend’s seat. My friend and looked at each other and then grabbed a cheek. Swore I would never wash my hands. Anywho I am older now and so is he. Bruce is like a fine wine he gets better with age. I prefer the E-Street Band but will take what I can get. Hope he will come to Rochester, New York but if he doesn’t I guess I will have to travel. He is definitely worth the trip.

Vet Slayed a Democrat | 8/24/2007, 8:20 pm EST

Legendary musician and a potentially legendary producer, great formula for success.
I loved the Rising, the boss continues to make socially relevant music into his late 50s. Keep rocking.

BK | 8/24/2007, 8:07 pm EST

Rick Springfield touring again!??! I can’t wait.

Songstress | 8/24/2007, 7:00 pm EST

Bruce could record “Puff the Magic Dragon” and the “Sesame Street” Theme song and I’d buy it simply because he sang it. Now that’s what you call a true legend in his own time and everybody else’s time. The man is a genius and for those who are putting him down: Put out a “Cd” Try and sell concert tickets for your own talent and see how far you get and then come back and say how bad Bruce is. You can’t touch him; so leave him alone. When the “Magic” cd comes out, I’ll be one of the many who’ll be standing in line to buy it; and when the concert tour begins, I will stand in line overnight, if need be to get tickets.

Joroe | 8/24/2007, 6:09 pm EST

I can’t believe the negative comments on here. I’ve been going to Springsteen shows for 30 years now. Yes, he and the band are aging and the shows are getting shorter, however, the sound quality has never been as good as it is now. Musically, they are getting better with age. Unlike other bands such as the Rolling Stones or Grateful Dead use to be.

I hope he keeps playing till the end. There’s just something about seeing a “legend” perform live. I loved the Stones show i went to a couple of years ago. Sure, they didn’t sound as good as they use to but the energy was amazing

Mac | 8/24/2007, 1:07 pm EST

I agree that the cover is not very pleasant. I can’t think of a cover that has ever really made me think “wow”.
Well, BTR and BUSA were effective, and certainly Nebraska fit the material inside.
But haven’t most of the covers just been photos of Bruce wearing various clothes/costumes?

I know the cover is meant to help sell the album/cd, but how many people are unaware of a new Bruce cd until they see his mug on a cd cover in their local record store.

I’m very excited about hearing the new music and its various live incarnations.

I am not sure how I feel about seeing Bruce in concert though. He’s aged and it does show up. But darn if he (and the audience) doesn’t have fun, still. After seeing so many shows in his (and my) younger years, I really appreciate the simple, smaller acoustic shows that he’s done.

For me, going to concerts ceased being fun a few tours ago. Too many drunks, people who talked during the concerts, expensive/lousy seats.

So I’ll see/hear what I can get on the Internet or tv and be happy with it.

I hope everyone enjoys the music and any concerts they go to.

Oelfred Biernot | 8/24/2007, 8:15 am EST

Radio Nowhere rox! Gustav!

Jason | 8/24/2007, 2:28 am EST

I find it amazing how there are negative comments about how Bruce is too old. Bruce can still out perform 95% of the bands half his age. Bruce and the E Street Band are still and will always be the greatest live band ever. He completly blows away other artists his age that are still performing (maybe that’s due to the fact that he never got into the hard drugs/hard drinking). Bruce is still The Boss and I can’t wait for the new album and tour.

Blenyowl | 8/23/2007, 11:00 pm EST

that “magic” cover looks as if it is a mug shot for a DUI bust on the nj turnpike after eating fried chicken from a bob’s big boy…perhaps he should have worn a v-neck tshrt like in darkness

I’m inspired to write beacuse of the first message I read, about the possibility that maybe it’s time to “walk away”. I think Chevy makes some valid points…
earlier today I was thinking about McCartney and how bad he sounded while straining to sing the “Sgt. Pepper” intro at Live 8, and how some observers at recent live appearances said he looked exhausted and worn out. I don’t want to see Bruce and the band hit that point, and I think they have a better grip on reality than Sir Paul at this point. I don’t see Bruce ever putting himself in a position where he looks foolish out there, but it does raise some interesting questions. When you see what’s left of The Who on stage, or the Stones, McCartney, Springsteen, etc., all acts still playing Rock and Roll…and trying to maintain a stage presence that resembles what they did in their 20’s and 30’s, what do you think? At some point there needs to be a transition, an acceptance, a concession if you will. Nobody wants to see their heroes become parodies of themselves. Old blues singers and folk artists seem to understand how to age gracefully on stage. Live Rock and Roll is a different beast though, and the artists in their 50’s and 60’s now are faced with the challenge of how to be relevant while not looking ridiculous. Some probably don’t care and just want the cash grab. I don’t think Bruce will ever stop playing Rock and Roll as long as he’s a performer…but I think he’ll gradually accept that there’s no need to try and look like the man he was on stage in ‘78, and the power of the music (The Seeger Sessions being a great example…a perfect transition) will be enough.

ChevyStockSuper8 | 8/22/2007, 11:29 pm EST

I’m not sure I’ll go see the show this time around….last time I saw the man & his band, thye dragged a little on “Born To Run” and “Rosalita”. Maybe they should skip stadiums this time around. Don’t get me wrong—Bruce and the band were, are and always will be the best hands down. But CC is 65–with a plastic hip. They aren’t getting any younger. I’m certain the album will be great–but the shows? I’m just afraid of being let down. And rock ‘n’ roll is just so physically demanding. Yes, as long as he has something to say, Bruce is welcome to say it. But eventually you gotta know when to walk away, as Kenny R. once sang…

Leo | 8/22/2007, 9:35 pm EST

Brenden O’ Brian worked with many bands of the 90’s and today and has the recording edge that music needs today so i think he works well with Bruce

Tony | 8/22/2007, 9:25 pm EST

Don’t even acknowlege the negative remarks. We can’t all be fans but thank God i am.

Chris | 8/22/2007, 8:43 pm EST

Can’t wait to see Bruce clutch his Vintage Fender and making it scream. Looking forward to some new rocker and great shows. I’m 38 and been a fan since junior high in 1984. I’ve seen all kinds of live rock acts and let me tell you they can all use some lessons from the man. He owns the stage as far as i’m concerned. He puts them to shame to this day as well as knowing when to sit back and tell a song on his own. Keep rocking Bruce!!!!!!!! Looking forward singing until i can’t talk the rest of the night.

What can you say, the fire is still there, Even though his political philosophy is child-like not childish, child-like, His music is undeniable, powerful and demands from the listener complete attention. If you have not followed Bruce from the beginning you missed something, like not seeing the Grand Canyon, the glasiers in Alaska, or seeing Born To Run live. And could you believe it, I’m from Jersey and have never met him, maybe this year.

chris | 8/21/2007, 6:11 pm EST

good news for all of us. forty under my belt since 78. we all should be proud to see THE MAN this far down the road. Just for the memories along the way. plus the influence he brought to our lives. hope to see everybody on the road soon…

Norway | 8/21/2007, 6:01 pm EST

At first I didn’t like the title. Now I have seen the cover artwork and I love it. Just take a look at Springsteen’s face. There’s some humour going on here. It’s great. Springsteen is really having some fun making music these days, he dosen’t take himself too seriously. He lost some of that after Born in the U.S.A. He became self indulgent. But now he’s back. Rock ‘n’ Roll!

Brian | 8/21/2007, 4:19 pm EST

I just hope Bruce sobers up for this tour. Heard he got drunk and cursed out a New Jersey audience on his last tour.

Donnie | 8/20/2007, 10:09 am EST

How sad is it that people wait to post on boards like this to have their two cents? I am quite aware of the hypocritical aspect of this message criticizing others who have nothing better to do then attack someone they don’t know over their interpretation of a fundamental freedom, the same one of course that people are using on this forum or page, whatever. If you erase Bruce Springsteen from your ipod because of his politics, that’s unfortunate for you. Why not give the album a chance instead of so narrow-mindedly casting it aside. Practicing partisan politics does not mean shutting yourself off from the rest of the world that you have decided exists outside of how you see things.

I can’t wait for this album. I first and foremost love the music that Springsteen has created over my lifetime.

Shark | 8/20/2007, 3:46 am EST

It doesn’t matter how old an artist is.
It doesn’t matter how young an artists is.
All that matters is - is the quality of the music any good. Whether you like Springsteen’s music or not, it is undeniable that he has written some classic rock that will STILL be played some 25 years and more from now. In my opinion, ‘The Rising’ was and still is THE post 9/11 masterpiece. I’m really looking forward to hearing his new music and hopefully catching him live again
Peace.

Jeff Jameson | 8/20/2007, 1:50 am EST

Brendan O’ Brien’s work speaks for itself. He was brought in to Produce Velvet Revolver, and THEY were the ones who had final say as to who would not only produce the album, but also the final mix and master, so they obviously liked it. So don’t blame the producer if you don’t like the album. That’s like blaming Ronald McDonald when you get a bad burger at McDonalds.

Jordan | 8/19/2007, 10:52 pm EST

There’s always gonna be people criticizing any artist these days, it’s part of music. Even Bob Dylan gets negative comments around here sometimes. As for me, Bruce practically saved my life with his thoughtful lyrics and grandiose music..I’ll never forget that. He’s living proof of the power that Rock and Roll can have on many people.

Diana | 8/19/2007, 10:44 pm EST

I could care less about the negative comments!! Everyone is entitled to their opinions…no matter how wrong they are (And I’m being nice here!) I want to see this concert more than anything I’ve ever done & if I can get in with a wheelchair and see it…I’m going!!! I’m checking day & night for news that the tickets are going on sale!!

Lynatic | 8/19/2007, 10:20 pm EST

We love you is Sealltle Bruce ! Come see us again.

Eric | 8/19/2007, 9:29 pm EST

Sorry fans, but I’ve seen Bruce at least a dozen times since I was 13 years old and Darkness came out. He’s merely a shadow of the old Bruce and has grown so far away from his old fan base politically that I deleted all but 2-3 of his entire catalog from my iPod recently. Ho hum. I think Kid Rock’s new one will be a better buy.

Diarrhea Monster | 8/19/2007, 9:00 pm EST

Can’t wait for Bruce Springstreet and the F Street band’s new CD in December! Looking forward to it! Clarence Thomas should also provide good sexphone parts to the ensemble! I am Buce’s biggest fan in the whole world! I am naming my pet poop after him!

obvisously this “john” person who says bruce should stop recording is an intelligent person when it comes to music. He should tell that to the millions of people who will see him during his new tour as he yet again will sell out every stadium and arena he plays. nice thought john…haha

It’s amazing that the biggest tours this year will be old farts like the Police, Genesis, Van Halen and Bruce. 25 years from now, rock as we know it will be dead and gone. Scary, huh?

Barry | 8/19/2007, 1:49 am EST

This might be too much to ask of Bruce but I hope the music’s good enough to inspire some of the younger kids to MAKE SOME BETTER ROCK ‘N ROLL

What I was going to say before my laptop decided to take a key-stroke to mean “enter” was that Libertad was to me such a weak digression from Contraband, like Brendan O’Brien brought out the puss in VR. Hopefully, O’Brien allowing Scott Weiland to pursue his musical influences and allowing Bruce to pursue his are two different animals…

AZ | 8/18/2007, 4:04 pm EST

Is it just me (and it appears to be) but did Brendan O’Brien ruin Velvet Revolver? I’m going to see them 9/21

You are going to call Bruce a sellout, and call Cougar the great american hero. Have you ever seen “Falling from Grace” John Mellencamp’s directorial debut, which he also starred in. Maybe Bruce will earn your respect if he makes a movie. “Dancing in the Dark: Homage to the Working Man.”

People, i am distrurbed at some of the language on this site– music alone is like air to some-have respect for each others comments-personally its been over 31 years since my first Bruce concert-he always gives 1 milion percent-back in the 70’s 3-4 hour concerts were normal for him-an you didn’t get ripped off ,he made sure that ticket prices were controlled-there was always last minute offerings so you didnt have to go to other sites and pay with your right arm and leg!! The man is in his late 50’s ! I would like to know if most people could find the energy at 30! Our newer generations including my children are different-they were brought up in a faster paced world with MANY expectations -in this world you get what you work for—Bruce has WORKED to get what he has-no body handed it to him!!! Respect the man for his gift-be thankful he still shares his LIFE with us-for those of you who don’t know each day is a gift-some of us whose longevity is questionable celebrate the simple joys singers bring!!BE HAPPY-BE THANKFUL-BE RESPECTFUL OF THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO BRING US JOY!!!

Like the great Joe Strummer once said (quote):”if you don´t like Bruce Springsteen you don´t understand Rock n´Roll”.
what a freakin´truth.

Daniel | 8/18/2007, 11:35 am EST

WOW, Bruce made my day.
He plays his songs with all of his heart and so much passion that´s why he´s my fav musician.People don´t like him just because he´s american like that HARSH guy said; I´m not american and i totally like his music.

What the hell is wrong with some of you folks?

What the hell do Fall Out Boy have to do with Bruce or the new album??? (Fall out Boy were cited as an example of what Bruce and the band will rescue the world from come October 2)

Its possible that there is enough room on earth for the E Street Band, the Hip Hop and rap communities, AND Bruce to all live, play, perform, write, record, eat, sleep…. PEAK…and YES, limp along past their Glory Days…don’t ya think???

Which is to say: lighten up, live and let listen…

Trashing the Devils and Dust era Bruce will have no impact on what happens TODAY. Dismissing and talking trash about less experieced (and younger) musicians serves nothing…Its mean spirited and contridicts what Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band do so well: lift spirits and spread joy.

Way to go Bruce. Can’t wait to hear and see you again. There is one thing he taught me and that is respect. So if you don’t agree with him, okay, that’s your right, but getting on his case, like some do shows only the lack of respect. Tnx Bruce, for all the great moments.

Harsh | 8/18/2007, 8:27 am EST

What’s the big noise abt Bruce Springsteen… i see nothing great abt him.. nowhere near the likes of Led Zeppelin.. whats so great abt him huh Other than he is an American and American musicians r supposed to be the greatest? wat a pitty… He is supposed to be the working class hero? Any American calamity or crisis is a new album for him..

me | 8/18/2007, 7:08 am EST

mike, bruce did not rule the 60s, as you say, considering he didn’t release his first album until ‘73. and isn’t highway 61 revisited dylan? clearly, you know nothing.

ROCK ON BRUCE!

Marco | 8/18/2007, 6:51 am EST

Great a new album

Cant wait to see the live show’s
Springsteen live is unmatched

Steindl | 8/18/2007, 6:42 am EST

Rock on Bruce and the E Street Band….don’t you dare forget to bring the tour Downunder.

mike | 8/18/2007, 6:38 am EST

i hate bruce. he hasn’t been good since highway 61 revisited. he owned the 60’s, yeah, but c’mon. plus, this guy is a total sellout. i’m sick of seeing his name on every sponsor from here to china. as far as i’m concerned, there’s bon jovi, dylan, and the true american hero, johnny cougar.

Brucie baby’s gonna show the world what he’s been hidin’ up his sleeve for this one! I was beginning to wonder if he was ever gonna come back and do us another great rock experience like he did back in the 70’s, and from the talk of Brenden O’Brian, and Jon Lan dau, it sounds like he’s getting ready to deliver a masterpiece for the ages. Rock on Bruce, and thanks for giving us true believers enough ammunition to shut up the naysayers, who said your rockin’ days were over after “Darkness” - you are, and will forever be the true King of Rock ‘n Roll!

Jason | 8/18/2007, 12:29 am EST

I can not wait until October 2nd. Bruce and the E Street Band are bar none the greatest live performers ever. Their four hour jam sessions are unmatched.

carolb. | 8/17/2007, 10:15 pm EST

Super bruce !!!!!!!! très impatient d’entendre …………… your new baby.

Jim | 8/17/2007, 9:07 pm EST

Yo Momma.
Your ignorance is showing.
Oops!
The name is Springsteen and he is what is great about the singer/songwriter genre.
He sings from the heart and there is so much passion in everything he does.
For those who say (tyler) that we have to forget about Bruce and find someone new to listen to you are missing out on some great music.
Music is all about taste and if we still enjoy Bruce’s music I think you should respect that and not try to force us to find a new boss.
I think the vast majority of us are still very happy with the current Boss!

Joe | 8/17/2007, 9:03 pm EST

It’s more like “Bruce + E Street + new album” = ****yaaawwwwnnnn*****

Yo Momma | 8/17/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Who’s Bruce Springstreet?

AZ | 8/17/2007, 8:42 pm EST

I’m with you, ‘tyler.’ For me, so far, it’s Craig Finn of Hold Steady. Jakob Dylan was there for a while, but he has so much on his shoulders I don’t think he’ll ever escape. Kings of Leon, The National, the songwriters who can balance lyrics and melody even approaching this level are few and far between.

tyler | 8/17/2007, 8:27 pm EST

To begin with in case you want to know!I was there in the begining.Yea,yea and i know i don,t know what i’m talking about!!You love the Boss man and i’m a dork and whatever, whatever.I was a big fan and still i’m.When i need a fix of the past it’s cool!I just want to remenber the boss. When he was the boss!!It was to long ago!!The future and the new is there.Europe is the rock world!Find a new boss and make it fresh!!The vibe and the joy is like when you found BRUCE.It’s fun also!Forget the oldie but goodie show.Get reborn with the new.Remenber when you found Bruce?

Bono | 8/17/2007, 8:06 pm EST

This is tremendous news! A new album by Bruce and the E Streeters is just what the doctor ordered. There is nothing better than the excitement of hearing the tunes for the first time…….and then listening to them over and over and over again and again.
Then, as a sweet bonus, we get a tour of Bruce and the Boys which is the greatest live show in the world…by far!
awesome news!

George | 8/17/2007, 7:59 pm EST

Pleeeeeeese Bruce, play Scotland again. you owe us big time. It`s been twenty two years since we last saw the E street band.

boo boo,
the fact that you even have skid marks in your underwear (buy a dictionary and learn to wipe) results in an instant loss of all credibility.

Bruce + Estreet + new album = unmatched religious-like experience

CT NJ | 8/17/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Apparently there are some posters who aren’t intelligent enough to realize the talent Bruce posseses. This guy is the ultimate songwriter and his concerts are incredible!

AZ | 8/17/2007, 6:33 pm EST

There is little greater in the musical cosmos than The Boss announcing a new album and tour. The Rising may be, thus far, the most important album of the new millennium, if not for subject matter alone, and this should be a hugely welcome addition in an otherwise weak-weak year.

boo boo | 8/17/2007, 6:17 pm EST

I’d rather wash skid marks off my underware than watch Springsteen in concert!

His new albums are always a nice surprise for me and he always gives his best. Very honest guy and i think he is just a great person to have as a friend too.

I know this albums going to be great because it’s Bruce Springsteen who has written the songs. In my opinion he is the greatest songwriter and live performer of all time.

Rob | 8/17/2007, 2:26 pm EST

The more I hear from O’Brien, the more I dislike him. Somehow he managed to ruin the entire Live in Barcelona audio mix, and huge parts of the Rising album just ’sound’ terrible. I think Bruce has put way too much trust in the guy and I hope he goes back to using the old crew as soon as possible.
O’Brien has done enough damage as it is but I guess people can’t tell the difference on their Ipods anyway.

Glad to hear more details - O’Brien has been a good match for Bruce. But “Hungary Heart?” Is this a new national anthem? Andy, get one of those interns to proofread…
