Rhodes And Gordon Named Second-Team All-SEC By Coaches

Mississippi State standouts Charles Rhodes and Jamont Gordon have been named second-team all-SEC by a preseason vote of the league’s head men’s basketball coaches. The announcement was made Monday by the SEC office headquartered in Birmingham.
Mississippi State ranked as one of four schools to have at least two players selected to the 17-man preseason all-conference squad comprised of eight first-team honorees and nine second-team recipients. Defending NCAA Champion Florida led all schools with four selections, followed by Alabama with three players and both MSU and reigning Final Four participant LSU with two apiece.
Rhodes, a junior forward/center from Jackson’s Lanier High School, earned second-team all-SEC honors (AP & Coaches) a year ago after ranking 12th overall in the SEC in scoring (13.8 ppg), eighth in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and third in field-goal percentage (56.4%). In SEC games only last season, the reigning Cellular South Howell Trophy finalist ranked fifth in both scoring (17.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg), third in field-goal percentage (58.4%), and tied for eighth in blocks (1.4 bpg). Additionally, Rhodes made 50 percent or better of his field goals in 14 of 17 games versus league competition last season.
A native of Nashville, Gordon collected freshman all-America laurels and was a unanimous SEC All-Freshman selection a season ago after ranking 13th overall in the SEC in scoring (13.8 ppg), 10th in rebounding (6.8 rpg) and seventh in assists (4.3 apg) as a Bulldog rookie. Gordon was the SEC’s leading freshman scorer (10th among NCAA frosh) last year, while also setting a freshman-season school standard with 129 assists. The former high school all-American from Virginia’s Oak Hill Academy has been rated this preseason as the nation’s No. 7-ranked point guard by The Sporting News publication.
