The topographic maps series comprises the basic 1:20 000 map, the 1:50 000 topographic map and smallscale topographic databases at 1:100 000, 1:250 000, 1:500 000 and 1:1000 000. The 1:20 000 and 1:50 000 series are available as printed maps, and smaller scales as printouts from our district survey offices. All our maps are available in digital form.

The basic map 1:20 000

The maps cover the whole of Finland and show the cadastral division, roads, buildings, waterways, cultivated areas, other topographic features and contour lines. One map sheet covers an area of 10 x 10 km, and one centimetre on the map corresponds to 200 metres on the ground. Data for the maps is gathered through aerial photography supplemented by ground checks and other information sources, such as NLS cadastral mapdata.

Updating the topographic database

The basic 1:20 000 map is based on the topographic database and includes cadastral boundaries taken from our cadastral database. The printed map is updated roughly every 5 to 10 years, but up-to-date printouts from the topographic database are available from our district survey offices.
