Vanessa Carlton Dodges Looming Question

Vanessa Carlton will perform at the opening bash for this weekend's WNBA All-Star Weekend in Washington, DC. We (briefly) caught up with the pop songstress to talk about the party, her upcoming album, 'Heroes and Thieves,' and to get the scoop on her relationship with Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins. Read the full interview after the jump.

VCarlton2007: Hello

NadineinMusic: Hi!

NadineinMusic: How did you get involved with the WNBA welcome party?

VCarlton2007: It was through a relationship with my label Universal, they asked if I'd be interested in doing it

NadineinMusic: And are you a basketball fan?

VCarlton2007: Basketball is good :)

NadineinMusic: Do you know what songs you will be performing?

VCarlton2007: I'm going to be doing some old songs as well as some new songs from my upcoming album 'Heroes and Thieves'

NadineinMusic: Let's talk about the new album. How is it different from 'Be Not Nobody' or 'Harmonium'?

VCarlton2007: This is my first thematic album. I really looked at 'Heroes and Thieves' as a body of work as opposed to picking and choosing songs to put on an album

NadineinMusic: So what's the overall concept?

VCarlton2007: It's about personal evolution and finding joy through hardships. Every song is like a different chapter in a book

NadineinMusic: How did you hook up with Irv Gotti and The Inc?

VCarlton2007: I met him in [Universal Music Group chairman] Doug Morris' office on a whim

VCarlton2007: We connnected instantly and I love his enthusiasm... we really believe in each other

NadineinMusic: That's awesome. And how do you feel being on a primarily rap/r&b roster?

VCarlton2007: I love being the only piano chick... that means there is only one of me

VCarlton2007: That's always better

NadineinMusic: Totally

NadineinMusic: In the the first single, 'Nolita Fairytale,' you say, "...the last two years, getting to what's real, now i can see so clear..." what happened in the last two years that gave you this clarity?

VCarlton2007: Touring with Stevie Nicks, buying my own house, getting my puppy and staying in one spot for more than a couple weeks. Making a life for myself in Nolita gave me peace and clarity. I lead a pretty enchanted life. [Editor's note: "Nolita" is a neighborhood in New York City]

NadineinMusic: Are you still dating third eye blind's stephan jenkins?

NadineinMusic: He worked on 'Heroes and Thieves,' right?

VCarlton2007: Stephan Jenkins and Linda Perry produced the album and did a great job. Looking forward to having people listen to it from beginning to end. It's that kind of record

NadineinMusic: And are you two still dating?

VCarlton2007: I have to run... thank you

1. Vanessa has broken things up with Stephan. He was cheating on her, and having relations with people that he met on the road when ThirdEyeBlind was touring. In her new song "Fools like me" She explains during concerts right before she plays the song, "I am dealing with a break up right now... Never date muscians Stevie [Nicks] knows." "when my hand was in you hand my heart was pure and now I see a different man rewriting memories....I Always knew the truth... Fools like me, how we love blindly, and the cracks don't count it's gotta break in front of me.
Peace

2. That's true, Stephan was cheating as I can personally vouche for that.I was young and stupid and fell for all the "excitement" that comes along with mr Wonderful himself. I always wondered how many others he was seeing. I wasn't even sure he was with V or not as I would ask and he would never say he was.
he is addicted to sex and i doubt it is possible he could ever be faithful or monogamous to one person.he is very closed off in a sense. i think Charlene was his only true love from what i know of him.

3. Haha, I love how she totally avoided that last question there. =]

Heroes and Thieves is going to be absolutely amazing, and I wish V the best of luck - she's still the best out there and I'm rooting for her all the way.
