3GP - Multimedia for your mobile device

Introduction to 3GP

3GP enables users to send large amounts of data over mobile phone networks, allowing for clear transmission of large files such as audio, video, and web data over mobile phones. These files involve large amounts of bandwidth, and 3GP format makes sending these files possible from virtually anywhere. Many modern mobile phones offer 3GP technology. Most 3GP equipped mobile devices allow the user to record and playback video using their mobile phone. These videos can also be viewed on a home computer, after converting the files to the appropriate format or installing the proper file reader. These capabilities allow users to create and record videos while on the go, and then view and edit them in the privacy of their home.

3GP works with a simplified version of MP4 format, which decreases bandwidth and storage requirements so that different file formats are available for use on mobile phones. 3GP stores multiple types of video files (MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263, MPEG –4 Part 10) as well as multiple audio file formats (AMR-NB, AAC-LC, AMR-WB, and AMR-WB+). 3GP file transfers always take place in a specific order – the largest and most significant bytes of information are always transferred first.

3GP History

3GP was developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), a collaboration of a group of telecommunications partners. The group aims to maintain and approve a worldwide telecommunication system based on GSM networks and radio access technologies. The organization aims to create a global mobile network, where users can access mobile technology from anywhere in the world. They aim to create a core network providing global service to mobile users via the Internet. It includes many well-known communications providers, such as Apple, Lucent, Microsoft, IBM, Toshiba, Nokia, and many others.

3GP Software

3GP converters are available for purchase or download, as well. These programs allow the user to convert other file formats such as .AVI, MPEG, or WMV files to 3GP format. This makes it possible to covert large files such as videos and DVDs into a file format that is accessible on a mobile device. Many of these programs can be found online through search engines. Using a 3GP converter, one can convert DVD’s or video files to a format usable by a mobile phone. 3GP Player programs are also available for purchase or download, allowing one to watch the videos from their mobile phone on their computer monitor. This allows for true versatility, making it possible to record videos while out and about and then review them in the privacy of your own home. 3GP Player 2007 is one free 3gp converter, available for download. If one is interested in playing 3GP files in Windows Media Player without converting them, one must install a program that can read 3GP format, such as FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder. Such programs allow the user to watch videos using your existing media player, simply teaching it to read the 3GP file. This saves the user from installing another media player that can only read 3GP files, instead allowing them to use their existing player.
