Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth Endorses Obama
LOUISVILLE, KY –Congressman John Yarmuth (D-KY), the class president of the 44 Democrats in the House, today endorsed Barack Obama for President, citing his crossover appeal to Republicans and independents and the powerful coalition he is building to bring change.

"The change America needs won't come easy.  It requires the kind of leadership that ignites passion, instills hope, and inspires us to work together for a better tomorrow," Congressman Yarmuth said.  "As we strive to take on the great challenges our nation faces, we need a leader who will stand up to special interests and build a coalition that will bring change we can believe in.  Because he puts problem solving before politics, Barack Obama has the unique capacity to build support from Americans of all parties from Kentucky to Idaho to Connecticut, and he will lead us to recapture our potential when as President.”

"In Congress and in Louisville, John Yarmuth has fought for increased access to higher education and honest and open government,” said Senator Obama.  "He knows that we can’t bring change without engaging all Americans in the process.  Congressman Yarmuth is a fitting addition to our coalition of leaders of diverse ideologies and from all regions of the country working to solve the problems that lie ahead.”

Yarmuth, who first met Obama in Louisville in 2006, currently serves as President of the 44 freshman House Democrats.  He was named 2007 "Legislator of the Year" by the Kentucky Reading Association and "Outstanding New Member of Congress" by the Committee for Education Funding, the largest non-partisan education organization in the nation.

Hey!

As everyone who has tried to buy things at the BarackObama store knows, there is a serious backup in shipping right now; in some cases, 6-8+ weeks!!!

LETS DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

Do you have any new or gently used Obama gear that you can spare? From stickers to shirts to signs, we'll take all of it. Or for that matter, are you in an upcoming state and you do not have any Obama things? Tell us! We can probably help you out!

Here's what you do:
e-mail me at: slvfreak@yahoo.com
Tell me what you have or what you need. We will try to match you up with someone who has or who needs those things!!!!

lets OBAMACYCLE, and get through this jam at the Barack Obama store.

YES WE CAN.

Part 2: Even if you do NOT have Obama gear, you can make some and donate it! All you need is a printer!!! Click here: Link

You can make ANY of those items. You do NOT have to use card stock for the rally signs; we will take WHATEVER we can get!

Thank you so much for your help you guys! We've gotten over 100 matches, and counting! EVERYONE has been matched!

Please post this in your blogs, your friends blogs, on the HQ blog, (you can just replace "me" with my friend Lace K or something like that), on your Myspace, etc.

YES WE CAN!

Hey everyone!!!

There is a VIRUS(!!!) being posted in the blogs. PLEASE BE ADVISED!!

It is being posted in a link that is spreading like wildfire in the blogs. Do NOT click on ANY link unless you are 100% familiar with the site. Hover your mouse over each link, and look at the lower left corner of your browser. The link location will show up (E.G. www.redcross.com).

I will not post the link because I do not want anyone else getting infected.

Do NOT click on anything that you do not know!
FYI. All youtube videos are A OK!

Please post this in other blogs, and feel free to contact HQ about it. I was unable to get to www.barackobama.com (or any sub links) for nearly 4 hours!! I kept being redirected to this site that [I had clicked on earlier in one of the HQ blogs] was scamming people and asking for donations.

Thanks,

Lace K

Please post this in your blogs and on the HQ blog when possible! Send this to your friends!

I'm an IT Manager, so I can give some advice to folks out there who want to take precautions. Not all of these suggestions are practical for everyone.

1) Use Linux instead of Windows.

Link

It's free and is not currently plagued with the virus problems Windows has. This is a very drastic change and not recommended for everyone.

2) Use Firefox

Link

It's free and not plagued by nearly as many problems as Internet Explorer.

3) Adblock extension to Firefox

Link

Blocks most advertisements on websites which is good. More importantly, there have been ads that install spyware before, so this could help stop those in their tracks.

4) NoScript

Link

This is a very powerful tool to help protect you. It prevents scripts from unkown websites from running and doing bad things to your computer. It does take some patience since you will have to configure it to allow your favorite websites to work without issue, but it is manageable.

I forgot to add that the NoScript is an extension for Firefox.

All this wouldn't have helped this morning when the DNS seemed to be manipulated and links on the frontpage where pointing to other locations.
Re: Great Endorsement!  |  Report to Admin
By Aaron from Georgetown, KY Feb 8th 2008 at 1:18 pm EST
Then you have bigger problems. You may already be infected and your hosts file is hijacked. Or your DNS servers have been hacked.

Either way, that's a bad scenario and you're right, these measures wouldn't have helped.

Aaron can you walk people though the process of deleting all cookies as well as all temp files and site logs from their computers. As you probably know if we are dealing with a spyware virus or phishing problem they are usually hidden there.

I would do it but my computer is set up in German and rather than risk translating the process incorrectly I'd think it would be better if you supplied the instructions.

For those of us who live in Germany I'd be happy to help.

****After doing this proceedure it will also be very important to re-start your computer and then change your password for this site.

If the password you are using here is also trhe same for other sevices i.e. email platform change it there as well!!!!
Re: Great Endorsement!  |  Report to Admin
By Reggie Feb 8th 2008 at 1:24 pm EST
Good advice Aaron however the problem seems to go futher than that.

There also seems to be a classic phish and redirect attack common on myspace. I am in germany and when I try give the url barackobama.com/blog I was automatically re-directed to a page asking for donations which was not affliated with this site.

The url barackobama.com was fine but when I tried to go to the action tab and click the contact button it also redirects you to this bogus donation link.

The Blog link did the same!!!

The problem though only occured on my laptop in my house. Downstairs in my office on my home computer the problem did not occur. What did happen is that although I was signed in already I repeatedly got ask to sign in again.

This is also a classic myspace phish attack.

A phishing attack is one where someone dedirects you to a page where they ask you for your password or even to donate, which you do believing this is a legitimate request of the site you are logged onto. what you are doing however is provide a 3rd party your password and of personal or financial information.

Does any one have a direct telephone number for HQ the 888 number will not work from Germany and i have made screen shots to provide them alone with other documentation.

And that's not just a redirect while they work on the website?

I've come here several times at 3 in the morning (hey, I'm a night owl!) and there are no blogs and several tabs are missing at the top.

I figured they were doing maintenance work and/or installing new code. Waited an hour or two, then everything was back up to normal.

Are you sure Obama's coders didn't just put some arrows on the Internets to go around the hole they were workin' on?

Thank you very much Congressman John Yarmuth.

Does anyone have any idea what things look like on the ground in these upcoming States ??????

When it's all said and done , it comes down to GETTING OUT THE VOTE.

I live in Oregon and even though our primary is a ways off , this area ( Eugene Oregon ) looks more and more like Obama country every day.
Re: Great Endorsement!  |  Report to Admin
By dlmcchesney Feb 8th 2008 at 1:00 pm EST
Just as important is making sure people in the later primary states REGISTER to vote.

I'm glad to see my congressman from Louisville endorse Obama, but we've never played an important role in the primary process. The deadline to register is March 4th (I think) ... I'm not sure how many people realize that.

I imagine this isn't just a Kentucky phenomenon ... I know a ton of people who support Obama, but never expected that their primary vote would count. I'm doing to best I can here in Louisville, but we really need a nationwide RTV campaign ... the GOTV effort will be a lot harder if a significant portion of would-be Obama supporters aren't registered.
Re: Great Endorsement!  |  Report to Admin
By addictedyeswecan Feb 8th 2008 at 2:16 pm EST
James,
Though Oregon is a ways off, voters need to validate their registration status and voting locations. If they are not registered, they need to check the deadlines and make sure they are.

...Can you help by calling and getting out the word? We need to make every vote count, but having a state "look like Obama country" when half the voting populace may not have voted in 15 or 20 years is not a good sign.

...Please help us out with the local Oregon Obama team to get the word out......and then we can all breathe a bit easier....remember CA...lots of voters broke for Obama at the 11th hour and their votes did not count....we can not afford these costly execution errors in ANY of the upcoming primaries.....

My in-laws live in PA and they are registered Republicans but want to vote for Obama. My mother-in-law was told that she could not vote in the Democratic primary because she was registered Republican. This was a lie. So I spent this morning on the phone with the Chester County Voter Registration office in PA and they explained to me that my in-laws CAN vote for Obama, they just have to change their party's registration by March 24 (the PA primary is April 22). So I wanted to let everyone know that people in PA who are registered republican can in fact vote for Obama.

To change their voter registration to democratic status, they go to their county's voter registration site and print out the application and mail it in. Then they will be all set to vote for Obama April 22.
THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE TELLING THESE INDEPENDENTS AND REPUBLICANS THAT THEY CANNOT VOTE FOR OBAMA. WE MUST MAKE SURE THAT THEY KNOW THE TRUTH! THERE IS A WAY, AND YES THEY CAN VOTE FOR OBAMA!

So I got us 2 more votes in PA!!

I am in Virginia and I believe Obama needs to address his religion here as that is a major concern to people who I am talking with. It is ridiculous.

Another McCain poll  |  Report to Admin
By JT Feb 8th 2008 at 12:47 pm EST
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows John McCain (R) leading Hillary Clinton (D) 46% to 43%. Barack Obama (D) leads McCain 47% to 42%.

Despite much commentary about McCain’s challenge in uniting the Republican Party, the Arizona Senator’s support from Republicans is just as solid as Obama and Clinton’s support from Democrats. Obama leads McCain among voters not affiliated with either major political party. McCain leads Clinton among the unaffiliateds.

i know it can be uncomfortable, but it gets much easier! just follow the script, and as you get more comfortable, you can use your own voice more and more. most often you'll be leaving messages, which is easy. and from time to time, you'll get supporters (which is awesome!) or people who genuinely want to talk with you about how they're going to make their choices.

even though it's hard, it's great to get out of your comfort zone sometimes... especially for such a GREAT CAUSE! thank you!

Dave the Axelrod is one of the best in the business. He is the brain behind the campaign - most especially the message. Every Republican strategists hate to run against David Axelrod; they know he is a winner. I guess that is why the Republicans are afraid of Obama.

On another note, David Axelrod was the brain behind Hillary's victory in her first senate run in New York. He knows how to frame the message, phrase like “Change we can believe in". You gotta throw your heart to him. Obama knows how to pick a winner …

Newt Gingrich "said today that last year he would have picked Sen. Hillary Clinton to win the Democratic presidential nomination, but now he's not so sure, calling Sen. Barack Obama a 'phenomenon' and comparing him to John F. Kennedy," according to ABC News.

Said Gingrich: "I think Senator Obama is slowly and steadily pulling away. The difference in fundraising capability is getting wider... I think he's going to be very formidable for Clinton to stop."

As for the likely Republican presidential nominee, Gingrich predicted that Sen. John McCain "would choose Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida, Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina, or his current opponent in the race, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, as his running mate."

The David Brooks comments  |  Report to Admin

Have you guys seen the latest David Brooks column?

(may require subscription)

An excerpt:

"QUESTION: But why would Democratic votes break down so starkly along educational lines?

DR. RETAIL: The consumer marketplace has been bifurcating for years! It’s happening because the educated and uneducated lead different sorts of lives. Educated people are not only growing richer than less-educated people, but their lifestyles are diverging as well. A generation ago, educated families and less-educated families looked the same, but now high school graduates divorce at twice the rate of college graduates. High school grads are much more likely to have kids out of wedlock. High school grads are much more likely to be obese. They’re much more likely to smoke and to die younger.

Their attitudes are different. High school grads are much less optimistic than college grads. They express less social trust. They feel less safe in public. They report having fewer friends and lower aspirations. The less educated speak the dialect of struggle; the more educated, the dialect of self-fulfillment

Did you hear the message of Clinton’s speech Tuesday night? It’s a rotten world out there. Regular folks are getting the shaft. They need someone who’ll fight tougher, work harder and put loyalty over independence.

Then did you see the Hopemeister’s speech? His schtick makes sense if you’ve got a basic level of security in your life, if you’re looking up, not down. Meanwhile, Obama’s people are so taken with their messiah that soon they’ll be selling flowers at airports and arranging mass weddings. There’s a “Yes We Can” video floating around YouTube in which a bunch of celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and the guy from the Black Eyed Peas are singing the words to an Obama speech in escalating states of righteousness and ecstasy. If that video doesn’t creep out normal working-class voters, then nothing will. "

David Brooks' subliminal note is that, to win the last mile, Barack needs to slightly retool his message to speak to working class fears, and confront Hillary directly on her support base.

Richard, I think it's really cool you got to see one of the candidates up close and personal. Most of us don't.

Regarding Rep Paul, I want to say this very respectfully, but I very highly doubt he would be chosen as for an Obama cabinet position. Rep Paul has a few very radical ideas and, deserved or not (he claims he didn't author those racist newsletters) it is well known that his followers include racists, conspiracy theorists, etc. To me he seems incredibly naive and hypocritical with no solid tangible plan to carry-through with his extreme proposals. See the Tim Russert interview for an idea of what I'm talking about.

What if Obama ran as a Independent for president. We have the grassroots networks in place, the money from our supporters, name recognition and national votes. I don't want this great man to be humiliated and be pressured by the powers that be to be the Vice President. I and I'm sure millions of people want to Vote for Obama as PRESIDENT in November! Let the bet hedging begin

By Tina Daunt, CAUSE CÉLÈBRE
February 8, 2008

...

As with any good show, there will be lots of improvisations, but at the moment the script looks pretty much like this:

John McCain

Ever since he declared victory on Super Tuesday, his people have been working the phones, trying to rally support among industry insiders.

...

McCain's got a significant boost from what many in Hollywood saw as Bill Clinton's condescending treatment of Obama. It made the Arizona's senator's what-you-see-is-what-you-get personality look newly attractive.

If it's a race between Hillary Clinton and McCain, some of the more moderate Dems may just bolt to the GOP.

Hillary Rodham Clinton

This week brought news that Clinton had loaned her campaign $5 million, which immediately sparked a wave of gossip among the Hollywood politicos. Then the calls went out for more donations, they started coming in and Clinton's supporters wanted everyone to top off the tank. (A lot of those calls apparently went to voicemail. There is serious Clinton fatigue in some quarters.)

...

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton tied up the endorsement of Jack Nicholson this week.

Barack Obama

Ever since Iowa, Obama has been on a roll in Hollywood. The only thing the Industry likes better than a winner is a winner who started as an underdog. That's Obama's story, and his supporters are sticking with it.

...

"We're excited and we're motivated," Irena Medavoy said. "Nobody here dislikes Hillary; it's just that we love Obama."

One of the things that draws us to Barack is that he wants to move beyond politics that demonize our opponents.

From what I have seen and heard, most of Hillary's supporters like Barack none-the-less. Let's campaign hard for our candidate and let's do all we can to recruit folks to vote for Barack.

Then I made calls to WA and the majority were either undecided and didn't know much about Obama or voting Republican.

It is URGENT! that we dont spend too much time focusing on HIllary and spend our energy on helping our guy win.

Thanks & God Bless

David Obey really did want to vote for John Edwards for president.

In fact, aside from the former candidate himself, there could be few better barometers than the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee for defining where "the Edwards vote" is headed now that his backers must choose between New York Senator Hillary Clinton and Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

And Obey has made that choice.

"For eight long years, in extreme partisanship, George W. Bush has governed this country by dividing it," the senior Democrat from Wisconsin explained in an email sent to this reporter after we spoke about the race Thursday. "(Bush) has pursued disastrous foreign and domestic policies and has stubbornly refused to listen to anyone's views except those who march in lockstep with him. America desperately needs a new president who can reach across old barriers to form new alliances that can produce a new era of optimism and a healthier respect for the needs of others. I had originally supported John Edwards for President, but with his withdrawal I am voting for Barack Obama."

Obey, who as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee is one of the most powerful Democrats on Capitol Hill, is an economic populist of the old school. No Democrat was angrier about the tax cuts for the rich and the free-trade deals that defined the economic policies of the Bush administration, and few were more frustrated with the compromises of the Clinton administration that came before it.

Obey wants a Democratic president who will work with a Democratic Congress to forge economic policies that favor Main Streets in Wisconsin cities like Wausau, Superior and Ashland rather than Wall Street. For this congressman, the choices are about a lot more more than legislative maneuvers and political positioning. Obey's one of the few really powerful people in Washington who knows the location of every union hall in his home state. And don't get him started talking about trade and economic policies unless you are ready to listen to a lengthy discourse on how successive administrations have let down the factory workers and farmers of his northern Wisconsin district.

Edwards' populist campaign struck a chord with Obey, and with a number of other old-school Democrats who have made economic concerns central to their tenures in Congress. They joined a number of key unions in backing the former senator from North Carolina.

But Edwards is

now out of the race. The unions are making their moves: The Transport Workers Union, which represents 140,000 workers nationwide and has long been one of the savviest political players on economic issues, just announced that, "With Senator Edwards out of the race, our officers found it an easy decision to lend our support to the Obama campaign."

And Obey says, "People will, and should, make their own choices, but I believe that, while both remaining candidates would make outstanding presidents, Senator Obama has the best chance of giving this country the new beginning it so desperately needs.
