PaulaGate 2008: Ms. Abdul does some 'splaining on Ryan Seacrest's radio show

Categories: American Idol, Celebrity Scandals, Reality TV

Paulacastro_dl "We all love the fact that [American Idol] is live," said Ryan Seacrest by way of introducing Paula Abdul's appearance on his morning radio show on Los Angeles' KIIS FM. The Idol judge was calling in, of course, to explain what happened during last night's telecast, when she critiqued both of Jason Castro's songs after he had only sung just one. Here's a breakdown of what we learned:

Before Paula explained her side of the story, Ryan gave a detailed explanation of what happened in the moments leading up to what's now been dubbed PaulaGate. He said that:

1) The judges first learned they were only going to give their critiques after the Idol contestants' second songs when Ryan said as much live on air at the top of the show.

2) Halfway through Syesha Mercado's first song, exec. producer Nigel Lythgoe appeared backstage. He informed Ryan and stage manager Debbie Williams that head of Fox reality programming, Mike Darnell, had just called to inform Nigel he wanted the judges to give their comments on all the contestants' first songs at the half-way point of the show.

3) Ryan told Nigel that he was under orders from Darnell to make sure Idol didn't run long, as it would eat into Fox affiliates' evening news shows -- and at that point, the show was running three-and-a-half minutes over schedule. Nigel said he understood, but the round-one recap/critique was what Fox wanted, so out Ryan went, just as Syesha was finishing her final note.

Paula then stepped in to explain, in her typically non-linear style, that (as best we can parse back into a linear timeline of events):

1) She saw Castro (and only Castro) singing his second song, "September Morn," during dress rehearsal (after she dropped off some friends and family to watch it).

2) During the live show, the judges asked for pen and paper to write down their comments as Castro sang his first song, "Forever in Blue Jeans," so they were a bit distracted from his performance.

3) When Ryan threw the second curve-ball at the judges and brought out all five Idols for the first-half recap, Paula said, "I got lost in my notes." Basically, she was confused about what she was supposed to be talking about, and since she had seen Castro sing both his songs, she went ahead and critiqued both of them.

4) She also mentioned that she had written her notes about David Cook on the same sheet of paper as her notes about Jason Castro.

5) Simon, of course, gave up on taking notes before he'd even really begun. "It was crazy for us," said Paula. "In seven years, we've never had to do that."

6) She did not once express any remorse or concern about what her comments may have done to Castro's chances in the competition, and his confidence when he finally did get to sing "September Morn" live.

Ryan then went on to state emphatically that none of the Idol judges have any of their comments pre-scripted, a comment that Paula then seconded. The two went on to commiserate over the sometimes on-the-fly nature of the show, before Ryan tried to wrap things up with this promise to Paula: "I'm going to hug you and squeeze you until I make you want me tonight." But then Paula said, almost offhand, "I'm telling people, 'I was just doing what I was told, and I did see Jason Castro in the dress rehearsal sing part of his song.'"

It seemed like she meant that she thought she was told to critique the Idols' performances, not just round one. You can listen to the entire exchange on KIIS FM's website here. Check it out for yourself, PopWatchers, and then weigh in below: Does Paula's explanation hold water (especially in light of the fact that she told Entertainment Tonight, in an interview that'll air tonight, that she mixed up her critiques for Castro and Cook)? Or is it all wet?

John McCain Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

Can I jump in here? I believe that Barack is not like his pastor. He has clearly been taken aback by Rev. Wright's despicable comments. It is John McCain's policy to run a clean campaign. I will not resort to name calling and finger pointing. Vote for McCain for change and 100 years of war! Thank you my friends.

Barack Obama Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

How outrageous! This man does not speak for me. Believe me.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

Barack, you need to check yourself and think about who you need to reach out to. Our people have been through enough. You're only trying to play act like a white politician. I'm so ashamed of the way you're acting!

Barack Obama Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

Reading these comments, it's clear to me that there is still so much division in this country. That's why a vote for Obama is a vote for change. We MUST effect a change in order to send a clear message to those who oppose change. Change is what my campaign is all about. Let's all unite under the banner of change to make this country, and American Idol, the best it can be. I thank you for your continued support.

Fire Paula? NO! She is the only reason to watch AI. It is fun watching a pill-popping and/or drunk grade D star self destruct on national television.

Also, I am tired of reading about the "Daughtry effect." David Cook is no Daughtry. Cook is a screecher (instead of singer) who lifts his vocals and arrangements from things he finds on CDs and the Internet.

That Ryan is still a cutie but it looks like he is gaining a few bounds.

Kids, AI is a huge money maker for Fox so it isn't going anywhere. A low cost show that brings in huge ad revenues. There is a slip in ratings but it still is the number one show on TV.

AI continues to disappoint me. Why couldn't Paula be gracious and apologize to Jason for critiquing his performance ahead of time. (show is rigged......) Why couldn't Nigel do more than plug his own dance show? Why did we have to sit through Simon getting in touch with his first crush? Why can't the results show just be a half hour????

Stop being an intolerant liberal elitist. I know this is hard to do, but give it a try. You must be a miserable person.

Jim Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:44 AM EST

I nominate Olivia Newton John to replace Paula Abdul on American Idol. Listening to Paula is painful and her consistent inarticulation over the years is embarrassing. Her latest gaffle on Tuesday night should not surprise regular Idol viewers. Fox, thank her for her contributions for the past seven years, and quietly buy her out of her contract. If Olivia is not available, why not Gloria Esteban, as someone earlier mentioned??

vader1013 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:03 AM EST

JENNIFER- good god, do you even know what "oxymoron" means?

ADVICE TO ALL... please before you rant and rave- check www.dictionary.com to make sure your words are 1) correctly used or 2) even words at all. and then stop voting republican.

vader1013 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

HEY LEGAL EAGLE!! Is "learnt" a new word too???

Anna Behan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:46 AM EST

Leave Paula alone. Some of her critiques are too long and sometimes hard to understand but she is an encouraging force for the contestants and a perfect foil for Simon. This year's contestants are amazingly talented and personable. I think that David A. could sing the phone book and I would listen. David C. has the musical talent and a voice that, like Chris D'Autry, will take him on to great things. I think that each of the final 5, including Brook, has a career in the music scene and the judges are to be commended for this year's talent. Ryan, you also are a reason that the show is so popular and your bantering with Simon can be fun but don't take it too far. I'm 62 years old and after long days with my 2 year old grandchild, my husband always knows that on Tuesdays at 8 and Wednesdays at nine, I'll be in my jammies watching American Idol.
Sincerely,
Anna Behan

m&m; Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:12 AM EST

Why does Paula even bother explaining?! She's just contradicting herself over and over again. All her explanations are ridiculous!!
Yes, totally agree with #6 on your post. Cannot believe she didn't apologize or even feel the least bit remorseful about what she did! Just shameful that she's trying to come up with excuse for herself! So disrespectful!!!

Slip McGee Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:49 AM EST

Hey superhonky,
How'd you stroll over from moveon.org?
THAT'S where you post your supercommie opinions not here. This is ENTERTAINMENT Weekly not the PINKO PAGES.

ljleason Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:48 AM EST

She makes absolutely no sense when she speaks anyway. Everyone at AI knows it. She needs to go if the show is going to remain credible.

legal eagle Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:59 AM EST

These comments and excuses from Ryan and Paula make no sense to me. It's all crap. She was supposed to be commenting on what she saw on the live televised show. Randy Jackson understood that. Something is seriously wrong with Paula Abdul. I have been saying it for four years now. She is pulling the show down. Her comments are often not about a contestant's performance and I am often left to wonder if she is in outer space when the songs are being sung. So she often re-uses Randy's words, for example. Now she's learnt a new word from Neil Diamond - "Prodigy". Listening to her is PURE AGONY. When are the Producers of AI going to realise that IT'S TIME TO LET PAULA ABDUL GO!? Please spare us!

snerdswords Thu, May 1, 2008 at 02:18 AM EST

Paula's inability to put two inteligible thought together is what we have come to expect from her...and she appears to be the less embarrassed than anyone else.
Good riddance to Brooke-sweet as Molasses but not an AI. Just wondering if David Cook might be better off not winning. That way he won't be owned by Simon.

anonymous Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:52 AM EST

Actually, you can rewatch the judges' first critique part. When Randy spoke, Paula was frantically flipping through her notecards. I believe Paula just got confused: she was prepared to critque on two performances after TWO performances. But then, Ryan (without telling the judges) came up and asked the judges to critique on the first performance. If you read some of the reporters giving the Idol's off stage reports, Paula was always the LAST one to arrive the scene like 1 second before the camera came on. I would not be surprised to see her confused like this when something unplanned happened.
Yes, that means I would forgive Paula and believe that AI is not scripted. I do believe that judges' comments are powerful in pushing any idol up or down. But what's the problem with that? Favoritism exists. Other than judges' comments, many other ways can alter the idol voting result. One example, placing who to sing first and who to sing last.

ignatz Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:52 AM EST

PaulaGATE? You're idiots.

Flower Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:46 AM EST

That was really lame to have Ryan gloss over Paula's blunder by doing a "poor Paula, you're still part of the family" line. What was that?

The classy and correct thing to do tonight would have been to offer Jason Castro an apology. They owe him that.

A Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:22 AM EST

Hey Superhonky....you took the time to read this article and then comment on it! Perhaps your time would be better spent worrying about your job that is in "jeopardy" or your home that is about to be "foreclosed" or all the bills you have to pay. If you solve all those issues then perhaps you can move onto worrying about all the starving people in America who you seem to be so concerned with. In the meantime may I suggest that you leave all of us "lucky" people, who don't have your pathetic problems, alone to enjoy the absolute absurd circus act that we so affectionately call Paula Abdul.

Der Sippy Cup Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:11 AM EST

Righhhht. TV isn't scripted. Righhhht Paula Abdul isn't a sad pill popper. Righhhht Ryan isn't gay. Righhhht Archuleta wasn't already chosen. Righhhht.

Yet with all his problems superhonky finds time to ease the pain by posting in an innocuous message board. I'm moved.

THIS crap is all you can think of.

scott Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 11:48 PM EST

AI is an excellent show. There are many good singers who will never be fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be exposed to a large segment of the population. AI decreases the odds and allows the impossible to happen –for some. I thoroughly enjoy watching the young “unknown” talent struggle through the process and work their way toward the top slot. For each and every one of the contestants, it truly is the opportunity of a lifetime.

As far as Paula goes, she is an important, integral part of the show. The cast of three judges and single host are forever cemented together; the day that comes when she is no longer a judge is the day the show is cancelled. Like everyone else, she is human and prone to mistakes. Each one of them have their own individual personality, and rightfully so. If all of them shared the same demeanor and possessed the same mannerism, the show would be boring and not as much fun to watch. Personally, I like the show just like it is –Paula included!

Jennifer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

Paula and her comments are an oxymoron. They were well thought out, too well thought out to come from a person who supposedly can't keep straight what she is suppose to be commenting on. Very strange.

Val Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

Paula does have trouble speaking what she is feeling, but has always been that way, she's ok. I so not believe what hapen will effect jason for the simple fact that the young girls will keep voting on him, not for his skilled singing(becasue we know some of the other contestants are far better) but because he is pleasing to the younger audience eyes. I think america forgets that this is a singing competition not a looks or modeling show. The winner needs to "Bring it" Sorry folks, Jason does not bring it. My bet is it will come down between the 2 Davids, theses boys actually can sing very well.

afds Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

ugh pathetic.
paula always seems drunk/drugged.. just not right
and that was a pathetic critique anyway.. according to me.. because i LOVE JASON CASTRO

mb Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

I believe David C is the best singer this year.. for originality, risk taking and entertainment quality. David A is still green and every song he sings is predictable, mellow and boring and of course the judges are pushing David A even though his performances are only at par. As for Paula, you can't blame her.. she always appears to be drugged. I now question whether the voting results are ever scrutinized by the auditors.

clare Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

Thanks so much for the spoiler. This thread is not even about the show's results - it is about Paula last night. Now you have ruined tonight for everyone on the west coast. nice job idiot.

D. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

The "judges" really aren't the judges now are they? Now the people who vote are supposed to be the judges. That's what they say anyway. The judges may be giving their opinions yes. Or maybe they are really just driving home the producers opinions. Who knows. It's not hard to tell who's winning will be the most beneficial to the AI machine is it? We love Jason because he is real and because he isn't allowing himself to be molded into what the producers need to profit. ...and the man in the suit has just bought a new car from the profits he's made off your dreams... Stay real Jason. We love you 'cause your not afraid to be you.

sassy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:16 PM EST

So glad Jason stays. I don't think his performance is stellar, but it's not bad either. He is unique. I just hate that the judges always shove David A to our faces. SERIOUSLY, his voice is good. But last tuesday he has pitchy problems, it's not da bomb.... He does not do anything special to the song either.. So how does it different with Jason Castro...the judges have double standard!

hdjd Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

David A is the best singer on the show and should win - saying the public is stupid is stupid - David Cook should not win - he has to big of a head and don't care for his attitude

kari Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

wet. soaking wet.

Pam Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

whats wrong with you people. Jason Castro is not a very good singer..thats why the judges critique him bad..its not a conspiracy..Look at idols in the past that won - its who the people love at the moment whether they are great singers or not.
David Cook is the best this year but Im sure the STUPID public will vote for David A..

paisley quinn Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

Why should we believe Paula Abdul, that liar? Give me a break. The show is ridiculous. Jason Castro's voting machine will only grow more powerful the more the producers BLEEP with him. VOTE JASON CASTRO IDOL '08

Carrie Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

Paula damage control per Fox and AI. Paula was confused ,that's a given. She stays confused, but I have lost faith in the critques now, Even if she heard the 2nd song in rehersal , that still is not right to judge on rehersals and not the actual live performance. Still not convinced it was not staged and she screwed up!

And now Brooke is gone and even though she is sweet nice etc etc , it was over due ...now it's Jasons turn. So far Simon trying to get rid of Syesha has not worked. Thanks to real voters. They want little Davy to win.

newfiegirl Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

This is for Michael Slezak. I read what you wrote about Carly. You would think that someone who writes articles would write about the topic at hand. American Idol is a talent show. I am Canadian and how many times do I have to remind Americans that this is not a popularity show. Also it is not your place to write these awful things about the contestants that have nothing to do with their singing. The unfortunate thing about all of this is that for some strange reason people will take what you say and actually beleive it. Are you that pathetic that you have to write nasty things about this girl. What you said has nothing to do with her talent and we know she has a lot of that. I challenge you to write another article about Carly and apoligize for the crap that was in you last post. I am also Irish and we were brought up with manners and common sense.

First I want to say get over it. Paula is human and she screwed up as we all do at one time or another. I am a Canadian and I think that it's time Americans realized that this is a talent show not a popularity show. To think that Carly and Michael got voted off shows that some people have no idea what talent is. Yes Jason is cute and Brooke is sweet but they do not have a lot of talent. Maybe for weddings or like Simon says a cruise ship. For God's sake vote as you should. If I could vote and if all Canadians could vote I can assure you the right people would be standing there. Put your energy in the right place and leave Paula alone. She has her hands full already putting up with Simon. Oh yeah Simon I do love you and I think 95% of the time you are right on the money.

For the BLUNDER last night, THE AMERICAN IDOL PRODUCERS IS NOW WORKING OVERTIME 24/7 FOR DAMAGE CONTROL.

Mike Darnell Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

Mike Darnell doesn't know how to do reality programming, he's the one who should be replaced!!

Keith Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

Article is actually wrong. The main point (#3) is off. In the interview with Ryan Seacrest (take the link and listen to) Paula actually says that she read David Cook's comments for Jason Castro. So the explanation is actually consistent with her other explanations. Now whether such an explanation is believable....

Sam Lim Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

With the BLUNDER last night Paula, already crowned who will be THE NEXT AMERICAN IDOL last night its DAVID COOK (it's really OVER COOK-ED !). I will throw-up if he really is -for he is just SMUG and ARROGANT it really show on his persona. He is not the EPITOME OF THE REAL AMERICAN IDOL. I think he will be A SPLASH IN THE PAN. We already have CHRIS DAUGHTRY which is much, much better.

David Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

Oh puhleez! Now dubbed as Paulagate? I think only you Adam B Vary (is this really a REAL name>?!) and Michael Sleaze-ak are SOOOO taking American Idol seriously as if it's the center of the universe! Get a life! All this tossing up of conspiracy theories and whatnots of yours and that bald gay boy "Sleaze"-ak is sooo hilarious!!

d k Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

re: reader; Gloria Estafan- just shoot me now. Her week is the one I always skip on AI, I actually am entertained by paula, I just think the producers need to fess up to the fact that they push their favorites and tell paula & randy who to promote and who to drag down that week.

chamlo Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

Am I surprised by Paulagate. Note really. It has never been a well-kept secret on how Idol pimped certain front-runners. What is sad though is that no apology was made to Jason immediately after the mistake or on Ryan's show. As a fan of Jason, I hope that he survives, but the true test of AI is not who wins, but who sells records. Let's hope he feels the Daughtry effect and surpasses AI expectation. I know I will buy his album.

reader Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

gloria estafan would do soooooo much better than paula ..she is the best of the best can you say replacement

Gategate Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

No, it has not been dubbed "Paulagate!" Stop putting -gate at the end of every controversy! That suffix has been banned.

To: Garbotalk Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

I totally agree, but I also think the producers should be held responsible.

Jae Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

Of course Paula's explanation holds no water. Her comments obviously had nothing to do with what she saw or heard last night. And if she did not even realize he had only sung 1 song, she obviously was not even paying attention. The entire judging system obviously is a farce.

Garbotalk Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

What Paula did was completely unacceptable, I don't care the circumstances. Judges pre-scripting, whether for themselves, or by others, is not a fair situation for rendering judgement for a live competition. Paula has been loopy/drunk/drugged/stupid so many times now, she deserves NO MORE chances! GET HER OFF THE SHOW and send her to Dancing With the Stars. Paulagate rivals the game show cheats from the 50s for unfairness and outrageousness. No judge should be anywhere near the rehersals if that will affect their judging.

zpez73 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

The judges have commented in previous years about how the singers sound in dress rehersal, so this is not a big surprise that they use this information for their judging. I don't think that producers write their comments. I just think the judges are lazy. They don't really have to listen to the performance on TV, because they listen to the dress rehersal. Also, it is time for a reality check. Anyone who is shocked and disgusted by this must have been living in a cave with their eyes closed and their fingers in their ears singing LALALA out loud. This should shock no one. If it was just about a singing competition, America wouldn't vote and the right person would go home each week. It is about singing, personality, and who doesn't tick you off this week. Just enjoy the show as a guilty pleasure.

PT Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

It's been obvious the last 2 weeks that Jason has been thrown under the bus and the sad thing is when you listen to the studio version of the contestants songs his are by far the best and most unique. TPTB at AI must be crazy to boot JC to keep their boring anointed one. JC has it all, looks, charisma and original sound. He had only performed 5 times in public before AI and still can show more emotion in his performance than anyone else. The obvious attempt to manipulate the outcome of the competition will keep me from ever tuning into anything associated with NIGEL L, All his taste is in his mouth and he has no integrity. JC is the most original contestant AI has ever seen.

Wolfeyes7 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

I think it's interesting that nobody here is mentioning Paula's 2nd flub when she called Sayesha... "Brooke" and that's why Simon said, "This has got to be one of the most bizarre nights we've ever had..." And then he made sure he mentioned Sayesha's name in his critique. Paula has been on painkillers before for her neck - as she injured it badly when she used to dance -- Yet she still needs to be able to perform her job and function as a clear headed judge. Maybe she's too drugged up perhaps she needs to cut down her meds on the show nights but if she's to keep her job something definitely needs to change as her credibility is now in the toilet. I don't care of any of it is pre-written, she still "thought" she saw Jason sing two songs which is akin to hallucinating on the show. David Archuleta and David Cook are immense talents and will be here for many, many years -- and Jason is also very talented and will do very well in his career. There is room for all of them in our music world!

caadlon Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

HOW AWFUL! I wanted to believe in the integrity of american idol...but now i know it's all a scam. jason is going home tonite because it has been predetermined. that's why paula's script was written to put him down. come on...when has she EVER put out negative comments on a cute guy? no matter how bad they are, she always sweet talks their critique. and, all of a sudden...after swooning after jason...she doesn't like him? and didn't anyone else hear simon, when he said to her "read the first one" and he shuffled her papers??? i am so let down...i still feel ripped off. i had to stop my vcr and rewind it last nite to make sure the vcr hadn't messed up and skipped over the 2nd performances. and jason...how could he even go on and perform after what she had just said about him? notice how he didn't complain though? cool guy

James Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

I've watched since Season 1 and was always under the impression that the judges watched the rehearsal and took notes that they used for comments on the live show. Do I think the comments are scripted by the producers? Absolutely not.

Do the producers owe JC a free pass or an apology? No, all he had to do was put on an above average performance. Some people would have used the negativity to rise above and prove a critic wrong. Jason looks like he doesn't care, and hasn't for many weeks. Not a conspiracy -- no biggie.

caadlon Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

HOW AWFUL! I wanted to believe in the integrity of american idol...but now i know it's all a scam. jason is going home tonite because it has been predetermined. that's why paula's script was written to put him down. come on...when has she EVER put out negative comments on a cute guy? no matter how bad they are, she always sweet talks their critique. and, all of a sudden...after swooning after jason...she doesn't like him? and didn't anyone else hear simon, when he said to her "read the first one" and he shuffled her papers??? i am so let down...i still feel ripped off. i had to stop my vcr and rewind it last nite to make sure the vcr hadn't messed up and skipped over the 2nd performances. and jason...how could he even go on and perform after what she had just said about him? notice how he didn't complain though? cool guy

TorontoTom Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

I would be delighted if Jason Castro goes tonight! He's a goof with minimal talent. He's usually so stoned, he probably didn't even realize what was going on. He probably thought he had sung two songs, dude...

Thanks, Pauler Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

Paula did us a favor by exposing -- at last -- the fact that it's all scripted, and that they merely set up the results they intended to "clause" in from the start.

The contestants should all walk off the show en masse, unless the producers apologize and allow them all to move on, "judge"-free, hereafter.

TO: LoriA Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Why do you have to get political? It's just a t.v. show.

LoriA Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

"Get a little perspective. It's just a show."

It not just a show, it's the show. And maybe if people start understanding that even crap like this is all an illusion they'll start to wake up to how they're being manipulated about the things that matter - like starting wars, for instance.

Chris Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

"I'm telling people, 'I was just doing what I was told, and I did see Jason Castro in the dress rehearsal sing part of his song.'" That's a direct quote from Paula in the above article. Well, honestly, it's a shame to think that she would take notes based on seeing "part of" a rehearsal. Comments should be based on the live performances that the audience sees, as they can be siginificantly different than the rehearsal performance. I, for one, literally felt sick for Jason last night. I think this proves Idol's bias towards the two Davids, as Castro's fan base is huge and polls regularly show him favored over at least one of the Davids. If he goes tonight, I'm gone for good.

MK Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

Paula, not apologizing profusely to Jason Castro, tells me that they were all told to throw him under a bus.
I don't know why they are so scared. Jason may not have the big belty rock voice, nor the big belty boring pop voice, nor the big belting R&B;/Broadway voice, but he is unique and talented and sweet and funny. Without him the show will be dull as dishwater. We all know they want the Finale to be between the David Twins. So what are they afraid of.

Maybe they are trying to recreate a Top 3 Kim Locke, Clay Aiken,
Ruben Studdard type excitement.

Well now THAT is not going to happen in my lifetime.

AnyS Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

Wow, nice how everyone is hating on David A. - I don't see how calling him "amateurish" is pimping him??? And calling David Cook the "next American Idol" is totally adequate - how??? Man, man, man, Archuleta just can't win with you folks, can he? There he is, just singing his heart out and having fun, and actually making a boring night somewhat bearable (alongside Syesha) despite not being on his best vocally, and if people like it, it's all only due to pimping? What utter rubbish! And I don't know why everyone's so "awww, poor Jason" - if anything he benefitted from the faux pas because it got him a lot of attention and probably votes, too, he might not have gotten otherwise. Give the rest of contestants, especially Archuleta, a break, for heaven's sake! It's not their/his fault, the producers messed up and yet he's somehow getting all the hate as if he had no talent at all, which is absolute bull because he has tons of it just as the rest of the kids. Sheesh.

Francis X. Bushman Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Bottom line is that Paula threw a wrench in Jason's performance. If Jason is voted off, I'm otta there...forever.

d k Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

If AI wishes to retain ANY semblance of integrity (ha!!) then they need to keep Jason Castro even if he's voted off tonight, Paula's little flash forward to the second half of the show ( and la la land) totally negates the possibility of a fair (ha!!!) outcome. (not that I'm crushing on j.c. or anything, I'm just sayin..) If, however, due to some unforeseen mass breakdown of 12 year old girls phones, David A. gets voted off I will again see that there is some hope for AI, sorry to those who would miss his twitchy, lip-licky, freaky performances.

LC Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

Unprofessional certainly describes last night's show! It just seemed so disjointed and frenzied, capped off by Paula's incoherent rant! Regardless of her subsequent "explanation" I think most people are resigned to her latest display as just being more of the same. I agree with some earlier postings - the producers should apologize to everyone, let the top 5 contestants stay, and move Paula to the awful "space stool" and "celebrate her home!" Also, I thought it was funny that in spite of the apparent need to "move things along," Ryan had time to share his story about riding in the "way back" of his family's station wagon and making faces at the people behind him - what was that all about??

seahawks08 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

I agree that the producers are trying to rig this show to their satisfaction. And how dare they to this to Jason who is a very sweet and talented young man who deserves to win this competions based on the fact that he is the only one who is a whole total package. I also believe idol is scared of Jason's fan base which is greater than either Davids. They need to wake up and realize Jason will bring them the most money.

JohnnyBway Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Bottom line: last night's show was SO rushed that a mind as feeble as Paula's (we've seen her swagger worse) simply couldn't keep up. It's sad that she's in such a state, but it makes Idol a lot of fun. Everything about last night looked like Talent Night at the local high school...unorganized, poorly planned and embarassing. But will I stop watching? Never.

FoxLies Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

This is not a surprising. The FCC will do absolutely nothing about this since all federal agencies have been castrated by the current and even by the previous administration. Remember we've been living in the age where ignorant masses believe that the "private sector knows what's best". Who needs rules, guidelines, ethics!

The thing is that the private sector not only gives you what you want but TELLS you what you want. Our culture has been conditioned just like Pavlov's dog and most people will accept garbage not only as entertainment but as food and even in our so called leaders. But I digress...

Evan Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

To everyone b*tching and moaning about Jason being owed an apology or not canning anyone tonight because of Paula's comments, get real. Do you really think Paula flustered Jason that much? How is it any different from Simon's scolding to all of them (first round was terrible, everyone needs to step up in the second set of songs). Paula is a basket-case, and she messed up. Move on.

mia Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

I agree 100% that the producers are making a huge mistake pushing so hard for David A. No one over the age of 14 is going to buy his cds. He is dull. dull. dull. Lythgoe has simply listened to hard to the screaming idiots in the front row and thrown away any credibility the show may have had.

Rod Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

I think it's pretty damn obvious that Paula's notes are scripted for her...she just didn't have the sense to realize not to read the 2nd appraisal until the 2nd song had been sung...

Kayde Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

I can't believe the huge amount of attention this show receives, especially something stupid like this happening! This is live television people. What you are seeing on the screen is relayed through an obscene amount of people, and while they should have their act together after 7 years, Fox is always idiotic and has to tamper with and change things that are not broken. A high ranking producer wants to change something, by the time it filters down through all the rest and gets to Paula, Simon, Randy, and Ryan, it can be screwed up. I highly doubt this kid is going to suffer because of something stupid Paula said, and I don't even think it matters in the long run because whoever is the fan favorite will have a career, not necessarily the winner. Also, people think that Ryan seems to run the show...point to the Assistant Director when it comes to time problems.

abcdefg Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

The bottom line of the producers' mind is: Which contestant can produce much money for themselves? They don't care the popularity but the marketability.
Somehow they have not done a thorough research yet about each contestant's fan base carefully. They made the decision based on the probability and their experiences and they might have concluded DA>DC and they miscalculated that of JC. When you see YouTube, the number of the JC related sites as well as the number of the viewers exceed DA and DC. Their emotional attachment to his music will propel them to buy his CDs and his fan base appears to be a wide range of ages. He is unique and demystify all stereotyped thinking. He can be a breakthrough AI triumphant if handles effectively. Wake up AI producers! Right now, they are making fool of themselves.

Tim Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Soooo, Castro second song s ucked but according to her notes Cook was great. But supposedly the second critique for Castro was Cook's actual critique. In the words of another infamous Idol judge." I don't know, dog, that just didn't do it for me." Her explanation that is.

Lee Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Earth to everyone. Has anyone ever screwed up at work? Difference is this is televised. I can't believe people want apologies. Get a little perspective. It's just a show.

Gretchen Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

We all know Paula's a mess - I just chalked it up to that. This whole conspiracy thing is out of control. First it was a scandal that there were "pros" on the show (Carly, KLC and Michael Johns) and now this. If people are so concerned that this show is "fixed", then there is a simple solution - STOP WATCHING. otherwise, shut up if you are going to keep watching. It's tv, s**t happens

Diane Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I totally agree that Jason should get an apology on the show - as someone said, they may not make anyone leave tonight, especially if Jason got fewer votes. Some other blogs have speculated that the popularity of Jason may be worrying producers (he received truck loads of balloons last week from fans) - I liked someone's comment about how they had squeezed the spirit out of him like a grape - Simon, maybe that's not why he's the same Jason you saw in tryouts. I will also lose interest in the show if Jason goes tonight, and I don't know if I'll watch more or not.

virginiaidolfan Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

THAT was the weirdest, most unprofessional episode of AI in Seven seasons! The producers owe everyone an apology! They owe the contestants, especially Jason, they owe the judges, and they owe most of all the FANS an apology. Nigel needs to come from behind the producer's cover tonight and apologize to everyone and then announce that no one is going home tonight. They really f'd/up!

virginiaidolfan Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

Wow; this one ridiculous situation has prompted quite a slew of commentary. In the end, does it really matter? In other words, at this point aren't people going to vote regardless of what comes out of Paula's mouth? Once the judges (who completely dictate who gets to the final 12 or whatever) finish their jobs, who actually acts on what they say (ok, maybe Simon who is the only one who has any insight, but Paula???)

Sammamish Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

The producers should take the fall. There is no spin in the world that can make sense of what happened last night.

Tony Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

The show should do something that would really boost ratings. Eliminate Paula tonight. Tell her she got the fewest votes.

Tony Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

It will interesting to see how they explain the Paula f/up tonight. I think the whole judging critique is a waste of time. No one but Simon says anything worthwhile. I don't like that you can vote multiple times. This just makes it a popularity contest. It's been that way since day one though. That's why it doesn't matter whether you win or not...ask Taylor or Rueben. It has served to get some talent discovered that otherwise would have gone un noticed.
Just mute Paula's comments.

Shel Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

If we are to believe any of that garbage-as-interview, they are basically trying to throw the blame entirely on FOX. So, is FOX no longer happy with the show? Down to the bottom 5, TPTB are sending down last minute instructions to their Cash Cow Show that they best not run into Hell's Kitchen?? On a night with 10 SONGS?? Oh, and I thought this was cute too. As Ryan goes on & on about how fast he had to do the show, we still had those two scripted interview breaks with Cook & Brooke. Hmmm. The Brooke one took place AFTER this added unexpected critique segment which was added even though they were ALREADY 3 mins over. Gee, I would have thought that it would be a no-brainer to throw out that part of the show to make some time for the real business of singing and fair critiquing. Gee, Ryan, how worried were you about running late? They truly must believe no one who watches their show has a brain in their heads.

Marinus Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

To top it off, Paula can't even keep her lies, er, explanations straight. If those comments about not trying hard enough were for David Cook, then why all the blind praise after his performances? Why would she tell Jason "I thought you sang twice."? Whoever said the judges are simply not paying attention is right. First this, and then Randy Jackson praises David A.'s off-key warbling. ? They'd compliment David Cook even if he went up there and sneezed the alphabet, so long as he had his Les Paul Special with him. Should everyone be disqualified for the judges being so off their rockers? Or should everyone win? The judges ought to be disqualified and sent home as the biggest losers. Besides, couldn't AmIdol find anyone more suited to be judges in the music industry?

Jason Castro obviously reeks of kewlness. He's the new Vinnie Barbarino! Just look where John Travolta's fame went. The judges should've laid off and let the guy sing his song.

jmaca50 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

I think it was simply an ADD moment on Paula's part that's created a coverup that's making it a bigger deal than it is. Here's how I interpret it:
1. Judges are surprised by sudden announcement that they are to give their critiques after all the singers do their first song
2. Paula's ADD moment: In the confusion, she mistakenly thinks they're still doing plan A, which is to critique following both songs
3. She thinks she missed the second song somehow
4. She fakes it, giving a critique she MIGHT have made had she actually heard a second song
5. The coverup begins:
6. Paula says that she mixed up Jason's and David's songs
7. Producers tell Paula to say that she heard Jason's song in rehearsal and that's what she was critiquing (this still allows for her ADD moment of thinking the singers had all sung their second songs)
8. Paula says what she's told to say
9. This results in two coverup versions being out there
10. Chaos ensues.
Paula's original error is a simply human mistake.

Jody Sheffield Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

THE SHOW IS FIXED 100%

As a producer I will say that if you listen close you can even find the mixing to be different...In other words some singers have effects and some don't....some have great mixes some don't....I have even heard poor vocal EQs for some....if you don't think a turn here and a turn there can change things up in a big way you have no idea....so the next time you are viewing the show...listen for volume changes and effects..a soft bounce from a little delay...it's all taking place.

MC Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

I do feel badly for Jason Castro. He has a case against the show if he's eliminated tonight.

Maeve Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

i agree with Get it Straight. They need to not vote somebody off tonight, because Jason could have done extrabadly on his second song after what Paula did, or he will get sympathy votes.
And the fact that Idol's excuse is simply that Paula got confused after having seen the dress rehearsal, and Ryan bringing the contestants on stage wasn't planned...they are expecting us to believe that Paula needs advance warning to come up with a critique because she is that out of it! it's insulting to the viewer. after the corey clark issue and now this...she needs to go!

Mary Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Blah, blah, blah.....the show is rigged.

Shel Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

(cont) Otherwise, the rest of the interview was complete garbage. Ryan interrupts her to "help" her by saying something like: so you are saying you accidentally said "2nd song" when you meant you were going on to the next performer. She agrees, but of course, we all know she totally dissed the song first, then thought David Cook was fantastic. According to their story, the same song had polar opposite critiques. Amazing. Then Paula confirms they NEVER do notes any other time, but while she is supposed to be listening to the singers, she decides to write notes from the "1 minute" she saw of the dress rehearsal? Why? Does it make any sense? Nope. Then she talks about how chaotic it all was to the point that Simon had to ask who went first & said he had heard nothing. On that basis alone, this week should be thrown out. How dare he critique at all? Lastly, I am just appalled at the lack of any concern for Jason Castro or the rest of the contestants. Its really all about them. Disgusting.

Donka Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

No, don't believe her explanation at all. I would love to see Nigel's head roll for this one.

Liz Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

Unbelievable....wasn't it? I never thought the judges comments were scripted in advance before because they were so lame (pitchy, dog (Randy), you look beautiful (Paula), too cruise ship (Simon) ....but now there really isn't much of an explanation to the contrary. If Paula hadn't opened up her mouth today on Ryan's radio show, I "might" have believed that she was a little tipsy from the wine in her Coke cup and she was confusing her notes on Jason and David into two songs for Jason. However....she contradicts this by stating today that she read her notes for his second song she heard in rehearsal???? Let me get this straight. She first writes her notes for Jason's first song on her paper. She admits she also put her notes for David C. on this paper. And then somewhere in between are her notes for Jason for his second song from the rehearsal???? Come on, old gal! We weren't born yesterday. Hate liars . Jason showed a lot of guts to get out there and sing his second song.

James Bailey Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Keep one very, very important FACT in mind - the people that run American Idol are not stupid. After the, shall we say, less than stellar record sales by Ruuuuuben and the gray
haired winner (even I have forgot his name) - there is no way that just the contestant with the most fan appeal will win - the winner WILL BE someone that the ones in charge feel will make them MONEY - after all money is and always will the the driver. So, yes the winner has been chosen or will be chosen - not necessarily by popular vote, but by money making appeal.

KATBEE Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

Nothing will happen to Paula because cute but incompetent chicks always make mistakes and get away with it. They're held to a lower standard.

Charles Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

Getitstraight got it straight. Everyone should be given a pass tonight because of Abdul's faux pas,and eliminate two next week. It is only fair to all of the contestants. Also, if it is all possible and the sponsors agree, a public stoning of Paula Abdul as Brooke White sings I am a Rock, would be so lovely.

Shel Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

I just listened to the full radio interview and have to say: Oh. My. God. I urge all to listen to it. The ONLY part that sounded halfway plausible to me was that the judges had not been informed about the change of routine. By "plausible" I mean that Ryan & Paula sounded halfway normal while describing that part of their "story." And, Adam B. Vary, if you are reading this & havent yet completed your full "I was there" recap, perhaps you can address whether the judges were indeed scrambling for pen & paper throughtout Jason's first song. (Which again begs the question as to how fair these "critiques" are - Paula said straight out that Simon had not heard any of Jason's first song...nice. Safe yourself, throw Simon under the bus.) Frankly, I have trouble believing that the judges would not be told before the show starts that they would be giving just one critique. I can buy that it was a surprise to suddenly switch again, but not to know before the show starts? Adam - note pads? (cont)

NikkiB Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Fire her!!!! There is no way anyone this incoherent should be paid to be a judge on this show. And Ryan needs to quit making excuses for her. They both owe Jason an apology.

wanda Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

oh, the judges/producers have always had favorites...and have tried to shove them down our throats. as viewers we just have to know what we like and vote regardless of their opinions. they might influence the vote but in the end, we are the ones physically voting. IMO we are not that stupid to fall for their tricks and if we do, then we dont deserve to complain :)

JKNY Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

Does this mean Paula had written notes about Jason's dress rehearsal performance during his first live performance? I don't think she's a multi-tasker, and it would make no sense for her to do that anyway. So how did she have written notes about his second performance?

mehere Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

It's all bull.

Anoymous Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Who cares? So she messed up. Big deal. It just made it more entertaining. Jason still would not have sung any better.

donner Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

as goofy as many of you may find this, I actually stopped watching Idol two years ago BECAUSE of Paula and her inability to speak coherrently...her slurring, strange behaviour and outright drunkeness has been what keeps me from enjoying an otherwise fun show...she's annoying, stupid, silly, worthless (as a judge at least) and pointless...sure, I guess if you enjoy watching trainwrecks, tune in...but just like watching Britney self-destruct, I don't find the humour in it...there are plenty of talented, hard working folks in Hollywood who deserve a chance to shine...Paula isn't one of them...until Idol fires her @ss, I won't be watching...

Patrick Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

I'm a Boomer, but why are they forcing these kids to sing Boomer-era music? The themes this season have stifled any attempt to sing contemporary songs. And Neil Diamond? It's unfortunate that one of them is going to be eliminated on the basis of 40-year-old middle-of-the-road pop songs.

Michelle Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Jason Castro isn't leaving tonight. It will have to be Brooke or David A (which won't happen) just because of what happened last night and the scandal is would cause.

AI is not under quiz show rules... it falls under reality shows so they get a lot of leeway to do what they want w/o having to be accountable.

Syesha is number one on Dial Idol... finally the fans are tuning out the judges and voting with the singing and not the scripted unfair biased comments the judges don't even try to hide anymore.

I'm already embarrassed for the way AI will try to cover up this story with some BS tonight...they are just going to make it worse... why do they keep responding to drama and not focus on having the best show possible?

Maybe next season the theme will be "the first year the viewers' votes will count".

Still love AI though! I just see right thru them though. :-P

DarnellO'Toole Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Get It Straight has it right!
And the FCC should come in and just ask some questions about that the songwriting contest. How can a FOX Tv show theme song writer also be a finalist in the American Idol song contest? Huh? At the very least does the term 'conflict of interest' mean anything?

cbs Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Thank you, Jazzy. Forget the smoke and mirrors and spinning of "THE BIG REVEAL" as a simple misunderstanding. The fact is she had a critique of a performance pre-written by her or somebody else, and was fully prepared to give it unaltered regardless of the actual performance. This likely happens routinely, but until know we had no proof. It does explain critiques that don't make sense for the actual live performance, however. NOBODY judges a dress rehearsal in a real competition, and alongwith the obvious favoring of David Archuleta by all 3 "judges" strongly suggests this show is a FRAUD, on the american fans and PARTICULARLY on most of the contestants.

DanOregon Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

So the Fox honcho wants to hear judges comments after the first round so they scrap the plan and improvise.
I wonder who the honcho wants to win this thing.
The day this show morphed from a talent competition to a marketing vehicle was the day it began to decline.

Get It Straight Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

The only fair thing to do at this point is to give all the kids a pass tonight. Paula's comments were unfair to Jason given that he had to perform immediately after hearing her lambaste the song he had not yet sung. In being unfair to one contestant, the voting for the rest got thrown off, so all should be given a reprieve this week. Two can be eliminated next week as was donelast year for IGB week. And a public apology should be made to Jason.

paula should find a story for her major screwup and stick to it.even if she got thrown by the producers asking them to take notes and give critique in a rush after round one she can't tell the difference in when she heard someone sing (rehearsal vs.live)"i thought you sang twice"she must be more messed up than we all thought.plus they shouldn't be judging on the rehearsals.or she's reading david's notes in which case why is she telling him the song left her empty and he's not fighting enough, then when told of her mistake says "oh,david, you're fantastic." and getting confused by the chaotic nature of last nite's show is b.s.she's been doing this for 7 years she should be used to it by now.why didn't ryan stop her as soon as she said jason's second song poor jason had to listen to that awful critique then sing.and she still has not apologized to jason or to us fans.of course ryan and paula are both going to say the comments aren't pre-scripted are they going to say the show is rigged.

Okie60 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

The change-up in the judges comments didn't seem to affect Randy or Simon. Leave it to Paula to screw it up! She's unacceptable, in my opinion. She's just loony and does anyone take her "Idol" opinions seriously???

idol? Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

this year's contestant sucks big time, so no need to watch.
who cares what judge says excepts simon's. Paula is always trying to be nice and randy is always "pitchy..dog.."
about time to kill these shows. I am sick of the same shows each season.

OK - the Dress Rehersal thing is just way to convenient. People, we are at WAR. 30,000 Veterans have lost limbs and suffer from PTSD and we are going crazy over a multi-millionaire with an obvious drug problem.

FCCwhereRu Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

Where is the FCC? What are doing? What are they supposed to do when you have questions about a hugely watched show? This isn't just about a TV show and a contest. It's about a FCC license and the Public Trust. If, and there is no proof of any wrongdoing, but if you have legitimate questions about one part of their programming and it's not questioned by the FCC, what about the rest of what they do?

getalife Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

If it wasn't for the sports coverage I would permanently remove all the Fox channels from my TV. Lame network.

Pikachu Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

I thought I heard Paula calling Syesha Brooke .. or did she say Look?

DarnellO'Toole Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

Watch the outcome of the songwriting contest. Adam B. Vary lampooned a song called IN THIS MOMENT which was written by the same person who wrote the theme song for the new FOX show UNHITCHED. It is a Final 20 in current contest. Vary and his comedy teammate gave it a 1 and 3 on a 10 scale. Is it possible that this song was slated to win? After the Paula gaff, I now predict a Perry Smith song to win. This contest has been very interesting for watch for two years. Some peculiar selections in the Top 20 from thousands of entries. This may be the area where the FCC should look for any possible "Quiz Show" comparisons. American Idol has been deleting posts on their forums constantly the last 2 weeks when questions come up about how the contest was run. There appears to never be any outside auditor for this contest for last year or this year. Can you have no apparent accountability on a FCC TV station contest?

wondering why... Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Y'know what, though, you gotta admit it's entertainment...

WhatDoYouExpect Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Come on folks, do you actually expect anything on the Fox network not to be scripted and fixed?!? Anything appearing in Murdoch's Fox Network is tainted and part of an agenda.

Watch at your peril and if you consume their programming longer then a few days, check your IQ. You may be surprised that is has dropped below 70!

Jazzy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Interesting that the show was proved a farce last night, yet entertainment shows and news, alike, are saying there was a misunderstanding.

The East Coasters who saw this aren't stupid. Paula had a list. She read from that list. She critiqued ONE person, the person it appears they wanted off so they could come to the final four tied 2 males and 2 females. It is their way.

There is no way Paula was referring to David, as her comments about him were upbeat and positive, incontrast to what she actually said.

That leaves two explanations. Either she had a sheet that she had written or someone else had written from rehersals, or the notes were scripted by the powers that be.

Only one person suffered the humiliartion on AI last night. She and her cohorts need to make a public appology to this kid and she needs to be canned toute suite.

Totally unprofessional and major fodder that the show is scripted, slanted and a total fraud.

The Bambino Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

The s how is credible enough, though the voting routine has always been questionable. Paula's a nut-job and in being so, one of the reasons I watch the show...if I'm going to be perfectly honest.

motherluvjam Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

This is just further proof that "reality TV" is anything but. There is far too much at stake for the show's producers (aka who is in the finals, and who ultimately wins) for them to leave it up to the voters. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they are manipulating the results, if not through the votes themselves, by manipulating who those votes are cast for.

Took some of the words right out of my mouth, Not Buying It...Unbelievable.

FLOWERKITTY Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

This is so unethical on so many levels. 1St, if she accidently read her notes from rehearsal, WHY are the contestants being judged on a dress rehearsal NOT THE STAGE PERFORMANCE!!! 2nd, While she herself was totally incoherent what she read off the card was totally coherent. that makes me think it is totally scripted and Paula is reading instructions from NIGAL LIthogo who has a total crush on DAVID A!

Melissa Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

I actually believe Paula's explanation. But PaulaGate highlights a problem I've had with the show for a long time: the judges don't pay attention!! Paula has said before that Simon is always talking to her during the performances. According to EW recaps, the judges are bolting out the door at every commercial break. You're getting paid a bazillion dollars and you can't sit still for an hour? It explains why Simon couldn't remember "the Irish girl's" name when the show was well into the Top 10. The judges need to stop acting like a bunch of Ritalin-deprived grade schoolers on substitute teacher day and give the contestants the courtesy the deserve. And I wouldn't cry a river if Paula were fired and replaced by someone more coherent. What's Deborah Gibson doing these days?

Not Buying It Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

She confused the notes for Jason and David? Then why were the critiques completely opposite? Paula gets paid millions of dollars - all of the judging changes were not that difficult to get -- it's simple: watch the performers, then judge. There are only 5 contestants left - if you can't keep it all straight - then find a new job. This has killed Paula's credibility - and people will always think the show is fixed. Time to make some changes....

Mabbish Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

Okay, let's presume Abdul is just an idiot: why is she on television acting like an idiot? How hard can it be to find an over-the-hill pop star who is coherent and can offer some mild comments a couple hours a year? Why does everyone on American television have to be an idiot? Simon Cowell comes off like Einstein, when, in fact, he's just an adequately educated Englishman who possesses a vocabulary larger than 500 words. How hard can it be to find his American, female equivalent to take Abdul's spot? I mean really, the woman is a national embarrassment.

The whole fiasco may be a blessing in disguise. It exposed the ugly side of this show's stragetic manipulation. Jason could not do the outstanding stage performance last night due to his unrecovered illness and this unexpected and unthinkable schemes. Despite that, he demonstrated great courage and fortitude. He had earned most viewers' respect and support. His fan base consists of various age groups and they are keen observers.
Some Jason fan might not have voted intentionally because they hate to see Jason be insultated systematically by the AI machines but some were determined to keep dialing in order to fight it back. Jason is a tough cookie. He will rise above it since he is solid and wise. Jason can handle whatever outcome will be and will find the best way for him. We are sure that he will not be a bitter artist from this.

I have a hunch that more viewers will treasure his music and buy his studio version of Jason's music now that we witnessed what's going on in clear light.

Chloe Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

Paula is a total joke. You can even see it in the contestants when they're waiting for the judges' comments. When Paula is blabbering incoherently, they all can't wait to move on to Simon for a real critique.

I agree with WH. They must think we are stupid. How is it ok that she was going to give a critique on just seeing a few minutes of the dress rehearsal. You have to be kidding me. That is the best spin they could come up with? I just feel bad for jason. He looked floored after all that had happened. Like he got kicked in the stomach and then they say hey your next to sing. Real fair. Oh well guess it is just a show one that I wont be watching any more.

jen81481 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

whether or not paula was reading from a script or just "confused," she (and FOX) need to acknowledge the potential damage they did to the show (now that everyone is CONVINCED it's fixed) and Jason Castro. he was put at an unfair disadvantage by Paulagate. true, his performance wasn't great, but we didn't need to hear that BEFORE he even sang it. what's all this david/david pimping, prejudging, etc., doing to the other contestants' morale?

wh Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Wow, the producers and fox types need to have a much better explanation than this. Talk about adding insult to injury. They think we're idiots and I, for one, have behaved like one for believing that this was a real contest. I want an honest, good explanation of why it's okay for a judge to give a bad review based a few distracted minutes of rehersal footage. They get paid a lot of money to do this right. I want to know why that's okay.

Get-A-Grip-America Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

Here's what's wrong with America:

There are literally thousands of comments about what happened last night on American Idol, it's all the buzz. Yet the story on Surrogate Military Consultants effectively HIRED by the Bush Admnistration, that the New York Times reported on last week, doesn't get the average American's attention at all. I would venture to say that most people reading these comments probably don't even know what I am talking about and certainly have not read the article. If you really want to see SCRIPTED results READ THE NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE!

Jason Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

I haven't really liked any of the singers that much this year, but can't stop watching just to see what will happen next.

I've always accepted that the judges and producers try to sway the voters (and if it's truly rigged then they don't have to choose the voters' choice anyway), but never thought they would write things ahead of time to bring down a constestant, especially since this didn't sound like "Paula's voice".

I know they never take notes. If they did take notes, they might actually say something constructive!

None of the judges are voice coaches with criticisms and solutions that would improve the singers' delivery or intonation. So what you get is the same stale comments over and over.

How long before that gets old? They need to change "Randy and Paula" out every year with new judges and make Simon give more solutions than just saying "it was a nightmare".

And they need to reveal the actual vote count if they don't want people to think it's rigged.

ice Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

I remember reading somewhere that the judges can't hear the performances during the live show too well because of the crowd, so they do occasionally watch the dress rehearsals and get their critiques from that. Chris Sligh mentioned it on his blog, I think, when the Top 24 were announced. The show is definitely rigged, though.

It was flabbergastingly funny! We all know they've been pimping Archie all season no matter how bland he is. We also know that Brooke's start and stop was only overlooked last week to get Jason off, but, it backfired and they lost Carly instead. Same thing with Michael Johns, by trying to overly criticize another performer everyone thought he was safe and "saved" (I think it was David Cook) instead. I don't blame Paula -- I blame the producers. Rather than trying to manipulate their audience, they might just want to do what they claim to be doing and let the "buying public" decide which contestant THEY think is the American Idol.

Amy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

No offense intended, but the only one I feel sorry for here is Jason and maybe the fans who basically got ripped off.

Excuse me, but why does she even have her notes from dress rehearsal? IF she was even there and IF she is even telling the truth she should NOT be judging a contestant off of dress rehearsal notes. Besides which I thought she said they were suppose to be comments for Cook originally...hmmm...something smells stinky here. I have sought in vain for any whiff of an apology, but big surprise, none in sight. It is no wonder poor Paula got confused/was scripted/let-the-cat-out-of-the-bag, what with the mighty sound of the much harped on, grand all-David finale drowning everyone out. Of the five contestants it could have been, are we surprised it was the one the AI producer, Nigel, claimed was the "weakest" despite his large following, that should get the insulting remarks thrown at his poor head and basically thrown under a huge bus? "Mistake" or not, Paula, if not AI's credibility is called into serious question. I'm sick of their playing obvious favorites. Poor Jason.

I don't think so.

Kim Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Kate Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

I call absolute bullsh*t on this spin.
A) Every on-the-scene report from every show this season mentions how Paula barely gets to her seat on time for the live show, so fat chance she'd make it to the dress rehearsal.
B) "Her" critique of JCas' second performance was way too coherent for Paula. Come one, it sounds like a prepackaged "talking point" from Nigel and the powers that be.
C) She uses two different stories...was it her notes from rehearsal, or was it her critique of David Cook? Which one? And if it was her critique of Cook, how did it suddenly transform from "lacking charm" (as Slezak said, a key word associated with Castro this season) to "fantastic!" once she realized her mistake?
C) If by some miracle she did see the dress rehearsal, it's still not fair for the judges to critique anything but the performance the audience just saw. What if they have an iffy rehearsal but an awesome live performance?
This show has an agenda, which is to get poor, sweet Jason out ASAP.

Were talking about 100 seconds. That's how long each contestant gets on stage. If Paula can't focus for 100 seconds, then she should not be a judge. Nice try Ryan, on laying out the foundation to lay blame on everyone else, but if millions of people watching can focus on the 5 songs the contestants sang live, then why couldn't Paula?

watch closely Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

So why just pick on Paula? The only thing Randy has said in several weeks is Hey Dog, check it out. Not really very articulate for a supposed professional. Doesn't matter really what Paula said no one can sing a Diamond song but the man himself. Brooke, go buy a new pony. Jason if last night rattled you then the music industry is not for you. Archie will be doing Disney or Christian music so who cares.

Reality TV? Whose reality. Some guy sits at a desk with his fellow manipulators and figures out how to make people watch their shows from week to week. They figure a little controvery will keep people coming back. The explanation of all of the "reality shows" is that they are not "real" people. They are scripted, edited, and manipulated. I can't believe how people are pulled into this crap week after week. How sad. I like one persons comment though. Get a life!!!!

Kerri Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

The worst thing for Idol's rep would be for Jason to go home tonight. So, clearly he will be staying at least another week. Which makes me happy because I really like Jason.

To Widstin Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

The judges are supposed to critique the actual LIVE performance. That is their job and is the nature of the show. I know all of the judges have referenced the dress rehearsal while commenting on the live performance and this is fair. But, you don't solely critique the dress rehearsal. If noise from the annoying mosh pit is an issue, then the producers can get rid of it. It sounds like you work for American Idol and are being asked to write excuses.

dingbat Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Jason has to go regardless of the fact that Paula is a dingbat. I honestly think she was totally confused as she usually is. Jason has no range to his voice and is clearly the one to be voted off tonight regardless of what happened. HE IS AWFUL !!!

Esme Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

The only way they can make up for this unfair fiasco is to have this be a nonelimination week. If I were Castro and I got voted off, I'd sue this stupid show. That hideous Nigel is worthless--maybe his brand of a*ss*iness goes over in the UK, but I thought we Yanks were too smart for sleazebags like him. He ought to go back to hosting the hilariously bad "Enemy Within."

To Kimberly Gorman Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Ann Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Who cares. She flubbed it. What's new? Her comments didn't change the way Jason sang - as if he even cares that much he's so laid back. AI suffered because they were rushing everyone which was ridiculous.

wldstln Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

Whoa, horsey. A loooong time ago, Simon admitted that he does most of his "critiquing" during dress rehearsal- since with all the noise etc, from the likes of David A's groupies, it's hard to really "listen" during most performances. I think Paula got busted reading her notes from dress rehearsal.

Rigged Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

Thank you, Paula for blowing the lid off of the show. I know it was not intentional on your part, but the American audience is a smart one and we've been suspecting the show has been rigged for the last few years. Nigel is the one who should be axed.

Roger Clemens Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

Ms. Abduls credibility is as solid as mine. Jason actually did sing two songs. The problem is everyone is misremembering the number of songs he sang.

exidolsfan Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

It was good in the beginning. But the show now is more about the crazy judges and the host.

luvwvu Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

ebert Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

Ms. Abdul, What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

It worked in "Billy Madison", It works here too.

reyna Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

That's the worst explanation ever! I expected a sorry for jason too! How is the poor guy supposed to give it his best after knowing his song sucked before he sung? I think this happened at the worst part of the competition also, because more than one of us was starting to think the judges are being told to praise archuleta and cook, and put down everything castro does because castro is the biggest threat to replace "i forget-the-lyrics-boring-predictable-archuleta".

mommydog Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

Whever the reason, the bottom line is Paula told Jason he sucked before he even sang his song. How could he NOT suck after that? They stabbed him BEFORE running the bus over him. The most fair outcome is that no one is elimated tonight and they boot two next week.

Here's what Paula told Entertainment Tonight:

Paula explains that she was trying organize her notes, saying, "I was trying to give my critique for Jason Castro, and scribbled Jason's name, and that was DAVID [COOK]'s! ... We all just screwed up everything." She adds with a laugh: "This is live television. This is fun!"

Completely different explanation!

Kerri Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

If Paula had seen all 10 songs (I don't buy that she only saw Jason's) performed beforehand so she could gather her thoughts ahead of time, I guess I don't necessarily care about that so much. What bugs me is that she lied and then lied to cover her other lie. I would have more respect for her and the show if she would have just stated the truth of the matter.

Anyone think the Flubb was scripted by the honchos at Fox reality to bring in Ratings for a result show that wouldn't have the big ones they would like? Yes I know Diamond is a legend, but most folks watching Idol wern't even born the last time he had any kind of a hit single. Add to that that it is bascially a two horse race between the Davids at this point and face it...they need ratings help. Maybe since we all expect Paula to do/say stupid things the producers decided to use her to drum up ratings with a little controversy. Sure does have people talking doesn't it?

I think its all Paula on this. No doubt AI is rigged as far as Judge's opinions are concerned. Anyone watching the Archuleta adoration should have seen that but I don't know if they script all judges comments. If anything, I can easily believe they do it for Paula because lets face it, she's hardly ever lucid. For Randy, his comments are never substantial enough for me to believe they were scripted. And Simon has been completely off so often this year (the only year I've seen it in its entirety) so clearly he's also being steered a certain way. From the AI producer perspective, David A. has got to be in the finals, he's gonna bring the big numbers which they desperately need this year.

vivienne Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

First of all Paula was obviously reading pre-printed notes which were to be read at the end of the two songs. Paula being Paula got confused when the contestants were brought out (not as planned) and duly started reading the "NOTES". It's obviously fixed and this year is has really shown. The Boy child can forget words sing off tune etc and everyone of the Judges think his wonderful, what will they do when his voice breaks. If Jason goes home tonight I think I'm done with the show and Jason is not a favourite of mine I am just fed up with watching the worse singers hang around and I no longer believe its us, the public, who are the bad judges, its fixed.

StaleCake Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

But if you think about it, isn't the funniest thing about it, that Paula actually did momentarily think she had seen both performances and it was the end of the show?

Because she had been told she would comment after both performances, since she was asked to comment she thought she must have seen them both?

Sort of like how I introduce myself to my 90 year old grandfather fresh every time I see him...

kg Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

This debacle has nothing to do with the rehearsal or Paula being "spacey," as some people are trying to claim as excuses.
Here's her explanation from Ryan's radio show this morning:
Paula: "I was reading the critique of what I was writing for Jason Castro, and on the same page that I wrote, was also David's, and I got lost on my notes, and that's as simple as it was. I did catch the last minute of Jason Castro" (the rehearsal she watched on the monitor). Ryan: "So what you are saying is, you were talking about two different people, but accidentally you said 'second song.' " Paula: "Yes."
Obviously it was not David Cook's notes she was reading. "I felt like your usual charm was missing for me. It kind of left me a little empty. And the two songs made me feel like you're not fighting hard enough to get into the top 4," but then David is "fantastic" and she's looking at "the next American Idol"? C'mon.

LM Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

Last night was an embarrassment for AI, it’s time for Paula to go! Since AI is trying to do polls to see why the ratings are down they should look at the show last night not just because of Paula but because it is obvious that the show is rigged. I will vote where how it counts – I’m changing the channel. So long American Idol!

D Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

What on earth do they need to take notes for, anyway? Are these people too stupid to remember something that occurred just a half hour or hour before? Saying you got mixed up in your notes is not much of an excuse - she shouldn't have had many notes to get mixed up in. They only comment for about 30 seconds, anyway. It isn't exactly brain surgery.

ns Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

The problem with having Paula on the show, period, is that she's such an imbecile that you can't do even the tiniest ad lib (like Ryan did last night), or she embarrasses herself and the show. The bottom line is that she started talking about a "second song" that everyone could see for themselves hadn't been performed. There's no explanation for that which makes any sense.

Kimberly Gorman Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

Here's her explanation from Ryan's radio show this morning (which you neglected to quote above):

Paisley Explosion Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

Funny, the judges always take the performers to task for not being relevant to today's music. Well, then please stop making them sing songs from the 70's. And I think we continue to get proof that Randy and Paula lost relevance some time ago. Simon's usually spot on, but clearly he feels an obligation to be unnecessarily mean, and you can tell he thinks he can directly influence the voting with his comments. And probably does.

As far as the performers go, I like Cook and Castro, but are these really the five best singers in the USA? Cook seems like the only one with a little "star" quality to him. Castro will do fine on a coffee house tour, I'd go see him if it cost me a $7 latte. The others are just oh so forgettable.

barelyaboomer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

Paula should apologize to Jason. Also, I usually dvr but was warching live last night. When I watch the DVR versions I usually FF thru Paula's comments. They usually don't make much sense. She is not sincere.

Gwen Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

Paula clearly doesn't live on this planet, so yes, her explanation makes sense.

Jason wasn't all that good light night, and if Archie hadn't been overpraised, what they did to Jason wouldn't have seemed all that bad.

I say we lose Archie tonight, since he started this whole pimping fiasco, and start over with the remaining four.

This show will be over in three weeks. I'm hardly losing sleep over it.

Ah well. They'll address it tonight, and we'll probably lose that fun call-in segment.

Darn!

Donut Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

There is no way to spin the blunder so that it makes sense. It was what it was. FCC, where are you?

Ned Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

What I don't get is a)If she were reading off the same piece of paper for which she wrote notes on D.Cook, why did she give HIM a glowing review instead of the negative comments she gave Jason and b)if she DID see the dress rehearsal, then what is the point of us bothering to listen to them on the live show if they've already judged the contestants. Their feedback then means nothing because they're watching something different to us. They shouldn't be allowed to watch dress rehearsal- it taints their opinions. I think it's all scripted and have suspected for a while. Last night just confirmed it. How else can you explain Mickey-Mouse-Archeleta being given the glowing reviews for performances that are vocally sound but so boring, they're hard to watch? I'm a Castro fan and I predict that to do 'damage-control', Castro will stay another week regardless of the votes. We never hear the numbers anyway so who knows if the final vote tally means anything?

Paula in one of her emptyheaded moments made a big gaf.

Perhaps no one will be let go tonight.

Ryan Healey Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

It sounds as if Ryan and Paula's complex explanation today was crafted by Fox to cover. Last night, she just told ET whatever came to mind. This is not the first time something odd has happened on Idol (like a favorite getting voted off) and Fox very quickly changes the topic and swears nothing is rigged. This is a major ratings powerhouse for Fox. I think they do mess with somethings to keep people shocked and ratings up and will say ANYTHING to cover that when something goes wrong. Also too many Entertainment shows feed of Idol news to get ratings and are not about to investigate and get locked out of inside scoop in the future. In the end, Idol being exposed and brought down would mean billions in revenue to Fox, they are not about to let that happen.

Mel Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

None of that explanation made any sense to me whatsoever.

Dawn To Pat: Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

When I was a little kid, I thought Kermit The Frog was real. And then I noticed he had strings and my mom told me he was a puppet. I was surprised but it made sense to me.
Last night was another one of those "Oh. It's a puppet" moments. Her explanations make no sense and their joint effort to cover-up the fraud that is Idol is pretend and phony like everything else on TV. And that's okay but let's not give it any more power than we would say "Barney" or "Dora the Explorer".

MC Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

They can spin all they want but the cat's out of the bag. Nigel & Co, your arrogance has finally caught up with you. No spin in the world will keep your ratings from sliding even further. You just could not leave well enough alone, could you?

Dawn to Pat Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Nice come back....

StaleCake Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

OK -- *if* we are to believe it was just a silly "Oh, that Paula lost in her notes" mistake, why were the other 3 cast members MORTIFIED with embarrassment? The cat was out of the bag -- there was pin-freaking-drop silence and flop-sweat grins all round, until Randy very gently tried to save her. If even Ryan Seacrest is speechless, you KNOW something big went down!

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

It was so obvious already from last week that they want Jason out next. That clips from Mr. Webber was edited in such a way that he was mocking Jason choosing that song, Simon told people not to vote, and then said, Well you can, it is a democracy. They have been transparent about one thing from the first few weeks, what they want is a David A and David C finale. Randy never stopped passing comments last week, during his critique, during Paula's and then during Simon's. He smiled before his own critique with glee. Go watch that clip and it was patently clear. I can also guarantee from next week, it is time for them to be harsh on david C, because right now he is ahead of David A, and they need to balance the popularity.

No spin can justify her spacey, demented behavior last night. I'm sure AI will be in full damage-control mode tonight, but it's too late. Best outcome would be Jason safe, Brooke gone. Producers and judges have been way to forgivable towards her and unfair to Jason and Syesha.

sheila Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

It is like they have sabotaged their own show time after time-repeating Beatles night, hyping this little gnome, Mariah Carey?!@, call in questions, pretaping crap... and Jason definitely deserves some type of apology. And Paula...ok, why would you "ask" for pen and paper during the show..that is not there already? you wrote notes from dress rehearsal during the live show? you said it was not good on "David"-then said it was great? And Simon- learn new words, and David A was not "clever" in song choice...you used the same critique when Kristy Lee did it and it was actually clever then! I am done with this show and never thought I would say that. And the worst part is, they will go on the defensive like they always have and treat the viewers as if we are so dumb and gullible. Take that!!

RickDee in TO Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Is it just me? I'm starting to wince a little everytime Paula opens her mouth. It's not because I'm hating on her, no, I feel almost embarrassed for you. Mind you, she's been doing this over 7 years now and I don't think she's gotten any worse.

Kim Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

It's clear the judges thought they were going to give critiques for two songs after the contestants second song. Since Paula cannot come up with anything on short notice it's probable that her notes, for everyone, were from the dress rehearsal. I don't buy that she just happened to see Jason and only Jason's dress rehearsal. I think she would have read two song critiques for everyone if Randy hadn't stopped her.

The question is does Paula write these notes herself or does someone else write them. I think that she probably writes them but I'm sure the producers influence the judging.

Very unfortunate that no one has addressed how this mess affected Jason, particularly his second performance. It had to throw him off.

tracy Ismert Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Please the show is so boring right now, at least Paula provided a bit of entertainment last night, every one knows she is crazy, it's a TV show, who really cares, we all love her.

Mia Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

The David Cook thing is the most confusing. Did he not have any charm? I don't know that anyone has ever called David Cook charming. Original, yes, but not charming. But again, she says that she wrote reviews for both Jason & David C on the same page - and wrote reviews on Jason's second song?? Really, this is even more out of it than Paula usually is... And that's saying something! Let's vote Paula off for insanity, inanity, and utter insensitivity!

Pat Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Get a life people. It's a tv show.
It's a scripted reality show like "the hills".

rls Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

That sounds like some serious BS spin. I must say, I'm looking forward to how they're going to deal with this tonight. LEt the train wreck continue...

timmy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

last night marked the begining of the end for this show

WTF Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Last night's show was an all time low for AI....no doubt anyone would disagree with that.
It's days are numbered.

Pat Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Who gives a crap, it's just American Idol. If you look out your windows, you'll see life continuing to function. Getting angry about something like this is fairly stupid.

wh Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Of course she's lying! Her explanation makes even less sense than her usual comments. I gotta say this whole thing disgusts me. Paula is just a symptom of the disease eating away at AI. They've broken their "promises" to us if they're not judging the same performances we are, and actually tallying our votes. I don't want to be part of this kind of dishonest manipulation. I don't want to be cynical about something I thought was real. So disappointing.

mojo man Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Paula is a crack head!

Alice Trudell Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

Paula has a health issue that requires medication. She is also only human. So she made a mistake, back off people!!!

Not Buying It Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Nice try at damage control, but I'm going to just say: Epic Fail. AI's going to have to work very hard to dig out from under this one. Maybe they could borrow the Hillary Clinton spin people?

pj Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Paula's comments will definatley have an effect. There should be a major apology from her and especialy the producors.

Joy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

I think Paula should be fired, and she definitely needs to apologize to Jason tonight. Of all the judges, she is the one who knows perfectly well what it's like to stand up in front of a bunch of people and perform. How can she excuse her behavior? She knows EXACTLY what her comments did to Jason (and, no, I have never voted for him). She should look up the word empathy in the dictionary and think about how she would have felt in Jason's position. Not cool at all!
She should be fired.

Beth R. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

Both Paula and the AI producers owe Jason Castro an apology. Paula, for undermining his performance and possibly affecting the outcome of the voting. The producers for taking a really cool laid-back guy and crushing the spirit out of him like a grape.

Count me as one of those "desirable demographic" viewers who WILL NOT be tuning in next season to watch another batch of kids get railroaded.

Big Brother Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Nigel is ruining the youth of America by reinforcing Paula's drug use by allowing her to stay on the show. See, even you can have a high paying job when you're drugged out of your mind.

who cares? The clip I watched of these people show they can sing a little but I don't get the draw of AI or why EW covers it ad nauseum.

Andy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

I agree that there's definitely some manipulation done on AI, not with the votes but with how the public will vote--some kind of psychological coaxing. I for one am willing to believe that the Paula snafu was an honest mistake (and further proof that she's too out of it to continue being a judge on this show), but then I think back to the semi-finals...Did anyone else, during the first week, hear some whispers during Paula's critiques? Even if it was just Simon or Randy coaching her "discreetly," they were putting words in her mouth and it got picked up on a mic. If anyone's fed what to say, it's gotta be her...but my guess is it's just because she's too loopy and dense to do anything herself. Sorry, Paula.

Kwame Kilpatrick Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Watch the spin attempt tonight.
Nobody tell a tale like I do...he he.

Lola Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Here's what I don't understand: five singers, two songs apiece equals 10 songs...which they have done very easily within the one hour timeframe. Heck, for the second song there's no need to have the package to precede it. This isn't rocket science, AI producers! I couldn't stand the rush last night -- disrespectful of Neil Diamond (and I'm not even a fan). And why can't the judges remember their critiques -- if they can't do their jobs, fire them. I'll be more than happy to fill in, and I bet I would give more lucid comments, too. And would also stop pimping Archie to be the next AI ... especially when he keeps forgetting his words and they let him get by with it without comment.

JJ Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

Total BS. Come on, it's 5 singers. You don't have the ability to wing it if given directions to provide comments after the first round? This isn't rocket science, and Randy/Simon had no problem. What a dingbat.

Dan Daoust Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Even accepting her account in its totality, it's still unacceptable that the judges would watch the rehearsals. Why shouldn't they have the same experience as the viewers?

tricky dick Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

I am not a crook!

Something about this show isn't entirely above board.

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

I don't believe a word of this. I can't believe she had no apologies for Jason. She better apologize to him on the show tonight. It's totally unfair.

Paula's note to self Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Tonight -- remember to take the pink pill, NOT the blue pill.

mscisluv Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

I'm not a "conspiracy theorist," but I do believe that Fox has a heavy hand in attempting to sway the audience (i.e. I think they probably make a conscious decision each week as to who they want to keep and who they want to leave, but I don't believe they mess with the votes). And I think Paula's explanation is total bull. It truly makes no sense why she would write notes based on what she saw in dress rehearsal, especially since that's the only second song she (supposedly) was privy to. I don't know what really happened, but I don't buy anything she said in this interview. I also think that us fans of the show (even those who aren't fans of Jason in particular) would have appreciated if she had shown some regret as to how it impacted Jason on a personal level.

Tad Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

LIES LIES LIES!!! Paula makes no sense at all when on the air & makes no sense when trying to "explain" her mistakes! IT IS RIGGED NO DOUBT in my mind now!! We're tired of the BEST SINGERS "voted" off, namely, CARLY & MICHAEL JOHNS, while Syesha & Brooke remain!!!

Tim Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

As for saying it was "David Cook's comments", she was embarrassed and reached for some sort of life preserver. It didn't work, but I understand why she would try and recover from her goof up.

Bill865 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

My question is why wern't Randy and Simon equally befuddled? If its that difficult because it hasn't happened in seven years I wonder why she doesn"t have trouble chewing gum. No two ways about it, Paulas gotta go. She just doesn't get it and whats worse she doesn't pay attention or understand which way is up.

Jason Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

she hate me

Tim Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

You know what? I actually buy this, after accounting for the quirkiness of Paula. I can see that, if she had seen Jason's performance live during rehearsal, during the confusion of the show she might flashback to that. Yeah, it was weird and insane, but it does fit better than all the conspiracy theories.

Why oh why Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

Her comments make no sense. Talking about "Castro's second song", she said it wasn't enough to get him to top4. Then she said Cook was great. So there is no way she confused the two reading her notes.

Dave Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

Right on Mark

Shan Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

"She saw Castro (and only Castro) singing his second song" ... well, that's a mighty coincidence, isn't it? Ugh. Just tell the truth. What's the worst that's going to happen? People will think the show is rigged? That's never come up before.

econruth Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Having already read her David Cook comments (negative) as Jason's critique why did she then go on to say that David was "fantastic"? It wasn't addressed in the Seacrest interview...

mark in nyc Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

let me get this straight. She saw the dress rehersal, but didnt get pen and paper till the show....then made note on Jason's first song AND what she saw during dress rehersal?
Does that make a lick of sense to anyone?

mj Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

It'll be interesting to see how they address it tonight on the show. I don't see how they can ignore it. And, if Jason is voted off, will there be any kind of backlash I wonder? From what I heard of the interview, she sounded very befuddled (as usual) and, you're right, not at all contrite.
