On Repeat: Vivian Girls: "Tell the World" [MP3/Stream]

As recounted in songs by Comet Gain and Walker Kong, the Vivian girls are the seven sisters who feature in Henry Darger's posthumously published fantasy epic, The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. (There's an exhibit on Darger going on right now at New York's Folk Art Museum.) They've also been paid tribute by everyone from poet John Ashberry to Sufjan Stevens, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Camper Van Beethoven, Fucked Up, the Residents' Snakefinger, and ex-Maniac Natalie Merchant. Brooklyn noise-pop band Vivian Girls drop sweet girl-group melodies into proto-shoegaze squalls the way the Jesus & Mary Chain used to and the way groups like the Aislers Set, C86s-ers the Shop Assistants, and the Manhattan Love Suicides have done with female vocalists. Vivian Girls keep the Shangri-Las' melodrama, too. "Tell the World" is rebellion in the form of romance, kids casting off their chains for a kiss like the protagonists in "I Think We're Alone Now". It's more harmony-oriented than are some of the groups' peers, and the tunes can take a more speech-like, punk-edged turn via groups like the Wipers, whom Vivian Girls have covered. Also of note on their MySpace page is lonesome "Where Do You Run To", which sends the harmonies skyward over a simpler, snare-based Spector beat. The Glandeco overlords are gonna totally be smitten and/or have their asses kicked.
