Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) is widely regarded as England's most influential early-Victorian architect, designer and theorist. His works, most notably his writings, were of seminal significance in the development of nineteenth-century architecture, furniture and the decorative arts.
A man of inexhaustible creative genius, Pugin was driven by a vision for a better, more just English society. In a mature professional life of little more than a decade and a half he created countless thousands of superbly beautiful designs for buildings, furniture, stained glass, carved stonework, ceramics, metalwork, jewellery, textiles, wallpaper, flat decoration and book illustrations.
Pugin's prolific output has resulted in a heritage of international significance in Britain, Ireland and Australia. The Pugin Foundation is concerned with his Australian works.
