Thirteenth Annual Gathering of the People Powwow

September 26, 27, 28, 2008

The Vigo County Conservation Club is hosting the Thirteenth Annual Gathering of the People Powwow.  We are proud to sponsor this event and believe keeping this Native American cultural activity in Western Indiana is a worthy and exciting endeavor.  We are pleased to announce our Head Staff.  Head Man Dancer: Walt Penn, Head Lady Dancer: Kay Witt, Head Veteran: George Reiter, MC: Cedar Heart,

Arena Director: Larry Penrose, Host Drum: Kingfisher, Co-Host Drum: TBA

We invite you as a trader to participate in the 13th Annual Gathering of the People Powwow.  It will be a very exciting weekend.  If you have participated in the past, we hope to see you back, if this is a first time for you WELCOME.  The charge for booth rental of a 20 x 20 space is $125.00.  We have made many innovative changes, including installing electric lights around the circle making it possible for evening dancing and allowing the traders to stay open later.

Once again, this year, we are having a three-day event, dedicating the first day, September 26, 2008 to field trips for 3rd graders until 2:00 pm, then opening to the public going into the evening.  Our past School days have been a great success with fantastic comments from the children, teachers, and parents.  We have had many requests from numerous schools wanting their third graders to participate in 2008’s Gathering of the People Powwow field trip.  We believe this gives the children unique hands on opportunity to learn about the Native heritage and the woodland people who lived in this area, much more than they could ever learn from a book.  We hope to help them become aware of the Native American tribes that called Indiana home many years before the Europeans came to America, in particular the Wea tribe, which lived in Old Orchard Town on the banks of the Wabash River,  (where the city of Terre Haute is now located), and the natural ways in which they lived.  We will have several areas of native interest, and hope you would help us with these if possible.  These areas are:

  • Circle, Dancing, Drums & Music, Regalia,  & clothing
  • Woodland Lodges, Lifestyles, (i.e.: hunting, gathering, growing, baskets, hides, tools, etc.)  Local Native American History, and storytelling by Bonnie Turtlefoot
  • Visit traders booths, learning about crafts and how they are made

We will have our friendship potluck dinners on Thursday and Friday nights at no charge to you.  In addition, we will have our special Thanksgiving meal Saturday evening.  We also plan to offer breakfast on Saturday and Sunday for a small charge.  If you happen to be in the area for another powwow or for some other reason, we will allow you to come the week prior to the powwow and camp for a slight fee.

We hope you will consider being a vendor and participator in our special Thirteenth Annual Gathering of the People Powwow.  If you have questions, or for more information, you can visit our web site at www.vccc.info
