LAist Interview: Matt Cady of Fanny Pak on ABDC

Matt-Cady-fanny-pak.jpgTonight on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew, three crews will battle it out with a series of 80's themed performances. Local favorite Fanny Pak continues to amaze everyone with their creative and funky style. LAist went backstage to talk to team leader and choreographer, Matt Cady. We asked Matt about putting together Fanny Pak, their quirky style, and some of his favorite things from the 80's.

LAist: Every time we talk to a member of Fanny Pak, we asked about the inspiration for the group. They point at you. They cheer for you. They talk about being in your dance class at Debbie Reynolds studio. How did this all happen?

Matt Cady: They started taking my class. I've known Beau and Tiffani since college. I trained with Phill. The rest started migrating to my class. I started using certain people for shows.

What shows have you been doing?

Carnival: Choreographer's Ball, a show in LA. We have performed at Saddle Ranch, several high schools, and other places. When the show came around, I decided to put a group together for it and that's what you see now.

You have such a quirky style. Where does the inspiration for your choreography come from?

I comes from whatever the dance calls for. I don't have limits. I don't like to copy myself. You have to create new things. You have to go outside of the box. Think ugly because ugly really works sometimes. Whatever the dance calls for, you set that and go for your goal.

How do you have the guts, the chutzbah, to be here with all of the b-boys and the street crews? How did you know that your style would work as a battle with the other hip hop dancers?

I knew that we had the creativity for it. We always try to come with something different and unexpected.

Did you know that from the beginning Shane Sparks predicted you would make it to the top 2 crews?

Did he really? Wow.

How do you feel about Shane deciding from the beginning that he believed in you like that?

Shane is a teacher who I have worked under. All the years I have known him, it's always been me dancing for him and being in his class. I love that he sees this side of me now.

Tonight all of the challenges are inspired by dances and films from the 80's. Tell me some of your favorite things from the 80's. Favorite movie from the 80's?

My favorite would be "Footloose". I did the show in high school and watched the movie over and over.

What is your favorite 80's band?

A-Ha. "Take On Me". That beat. It's amazing.

Favorite 80's TV show?

Care Bears.

Good luck Matt and Fanny Pak. West Coast represent!

Check out America's Best Dance Crew on MTV tonight at 10pm ET/PT to see the the crews go back to the 80's.
