Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: CR A4c    ver 3.1 (2001)
Year Assessed: 2003
Assessor/s: Cuarón, A.D., de Grammont, P.C., Cortés-Ortiz, L. Wong, G. & Silva, J.C.S.
Evaluator/s: Rylands, A.B. & Mittermeier, R.A. (Primate Red List Authority)
Justification: Ateles geoffroyi vellerosus was assessed as Least Concern in 1996. Since then, the status of this subspecies has declined and it is now reassessed as Critically Endangered.

A decline in population size of 84% within three generations (30 years) is projected based on an annual rate of 6.2% (Cuarón 1997). There is also a significant historic tendency of habitat loss (84%). The extent of occurrence is larger than 20,000 km² (56,789 km², including small forest fragments probably uninhabited). The subspecies is subject to exploitation for pet trafficking in some areas and localized use as a game in some regions.
