  • Madonna opens American leg of tour at Izod Center

    by Jay Lustig/The Star-Ledger
    Sunday October 05, 2008, 12:06 PM

Madonna performs in concert Saturday night at at the Izod Center.

Madonna. Where and when: 8 p.m. Oct. 6-7 and 11-12 at Madison Square Garden, New York; 8 p.m. Nov. 22 at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City. How much: $64.50-$354.50 for New York, $50-$350 for Atlantic City. Call (201) 507-8900 or visit ticketmaster.com.

Stubborn button-pusher that she is, Madonna couldn't make it through her Saturday night concert at the Izod Center in East Rutherford -- the opening show of the American leg of her "Sticky and Sweet Tour" -- without a few Sarah Palin references.

First came a short rant: "Sarah Palin can't come to this party! She is not in my show! She will never be in my show!" During her punk-metal version of "Hung Up," she introduced a purposely grating guitar solo with the line, "This is the sound of Sarah Palin's husband's snowmobile when it won't start." Finally, she donned eyeglasses for the show's closer, the ecstatic dance number, "Give It 2 Me."

Palin's ticketmate John McCain got far harsher treatment. In a video interlude, Madonna grouped McCain with history's villains (example: Adolf Hitler) and Barack Obama with history's heroes (example: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.). Even by pop-concert standards, this was absurdly heavy-handed.

Then again, Madonna wouldn't be Madonna without a little overkill. The show, which is also coming to Madison Square Garden and Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, was a characteristically lavish affair, with correspondingly lavish prices ($55-$350). She made her grand entrance on a throne, and led a cast of 27 (including dancers, instrumentalists and backing vocalists). There were lasers for "Ray of Light" and "Give It 2 Me"; a catwalk with conveyor belts, extending out to a mid-arena mini-stage; a boxing ring for two dancers to face off in during one of Madonna's costume changes; and, during "Into the Groove," an elaborate group jump-rope routine, plus videos adapted from the artwork of the late Keith Haring.

Madonna performs with her guitar Saturday night at the Izod Center.

A video featuring a piece of candy working its way through some intricate, futuristic machinery accompanied "Candy Shop." And Madonna's costumes often had a whimsical flair. During "4 Minutes," for example, she wore a football player's shoulder pads, turned into something colorful and glittering.

For "She's Not Me," a song directed at a romantic rival who "started dyeing her hair/And wearing the same perfume as me," some of Madonna's dancers dressed as former versions of herself -- the street urchin, the dominatrix and so on. Madonna ripped the wig off one and threw it on the ground, then indulged in a full-blown, theatrical tantrum.

Guests vocalists on Madonna's recent "Hard Candy" album (Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland) appeared via videotape, singing or rapping their parts. Four video Timberlakes actually contributed to "4 Minutes," moving around the stage on portable screens.

An extended gypsy/flamenco segment featured support from the Russian group the Kolpakov Trio and included, among other songs, a radically reworked version of "La Isla Bonita." "Borderline" got an overhaul, too, with a spunky new-wave pop arrangement. And "Music" was remade as old-school electrofunk.

When not reinventing her old songs, Madonna was usually playing new ones -- nine of the show's numbers came from "Hard Candy." There usually wasn't much substance to the lyrics ("My sugar is sweet," she boasted in "Candy Shop," while "Spanish Lesson" offered lines like "Yo te quiero means I love you"). But generally, the beats and hooks were strong enough -- and there was so much else going on, visually -- that you didn't notice.

There were a few pensive moments in the show, such as the longing "Miles Away" (a new song about the difficulties of a long-distance romance) and the stately ballad "You Must Love Me" (from "Evita"). Late in the evening, Madonna asked for requests and, after fans held up signs for "Open Your Heart," sang that oldie with the audience clapping along and just one musician, the drummer, playing along.

But in general, the show was about the new. It was also about spectacle, and dancing (Madonna's middle-aged athleticism is nothing short of astonishing), and blowing off a little steam. "Express yourself, don't repress yourself," she sang in "Human Nature," and she followed that advice, no matter how fanciful or (in the case of the McCain/Hitler video) puerile her ideas were.

    Here is the show's setlist:

    "Candy Shop"

    "Beat Goes On"

    "Human Nature"

    "Vogue"

    "Die Another Day" (video/dance interlude)

    "Into the Groove"

    "Heartbeat'

    "Borderline"

    "She's Not Me"

    "Music"

"Here Comes the Rain Again" (video/dance interlude)

    "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You"

    "Spanish Lesson"

    "Miles Away"

    "La Isla Bonita"

    "Doli Doli"

    "You Must Love Me"

    "Get Stupid" (video interlude)

    "4 Minutes"

    "Like a Prayer"

    "Ray of Light"

    "Open Your Heart"

    "Hung Up"

    "Give It 2 Me"

Madonna- get over yourself, jealous much of Palin?

maddonna hit the wall several years ago, Palin is news like her or not.

Who would listen to this slutty whore. I watched that youtube video and am shocked to see type of adult videos that this board puts online and cannot be blocked for children. The video seems more like a live sex show than a music concert.

    Disgusting...

Posted by Grinny on 10/05/08 at 1:20PM

NJ, what "live sex show"? The video looked okay to me.

Madge sounded like she was out of breath in one of those numbers.

No matter who it is you support, you shouldn't use your concerts as an arena for a political statement.

Posted by Malignancy on 10/05/08 at 2:34PM

You have to give Madonna credit for not accepting the fact that her career was over like.... a decade ago.... Now she's a side show carnival that happens to produce ticket sales... And they thought the sex convention was bad...... BAH!

    Posted by catullus13 on 10/05/08 at 2:37PM

I notice all the "performers shouldn't get involved with politics" commenters never criticize the inbred, mouth-breathing, country music artists who praise Bush, the GOP and "Amurricaa" constantly.

    Posted by bcox51 on 10/05/08 at 4:18PM

very intellegent catullus13, 2 wrongs making it right. Did it ever occur to anyone that the tickets to Madonna's show do not say "political rally". My guess is that fans who spent the money believed they were there to see a "concert". Performers abusing their fame to deliver these diatribes are way out of line andf a tool of the left. BTW, this tour is embarrasingly called "sticky & sweet" for the aging anti-american has been.

Posted by thestarmaker on 10/05/08 at 4:54PM

bcox- well said. When I go to a concert I dont want to hear ANYTHING political..dems..replican..etc.. The performer is basically hijacking the spirit of their own event to express their political views, sad thing is that there are many that will vote for these so called performers endorse.

Posted by duntaday on 10/05/08 at 6:53PM

Political stuff is in the news, it ends up on the stage. Why is it that some of you people seem to think that artists using their soap box to say their piece is somehow wrong. OK, so it's pop music and not hippy folk rock but that doesn't mean they don't have a right to speak their mind. Sounds to me like you people are afraid that you're going to lose. You will by the way. Freedom of speech people. You don't like it, don't buy the ticket. If you buy the ticket, enjoy the ride.
I do agree that the aligning of McCain with people like Hitler is a little much but we're talking about a pop music audience. You gotta be a little too obvious or they won't get it. snicker snicker...
I'm sure the show was great and despite this story making it seem like it was a political rally of some sort, I believe it was a whole lot more entertainment.
    Stop whining!

    Posted by bcox51 on 10/05/08 at 8:00PM

you missed the point duntaday. Your quote "Political stuff is in the news, it ends up on the stage." is completely overlooking the larger issue. If this we're true we would have heard much more from performers and the liberal media during such democrat greatest hits as the Bill Clinton exploits in the white house or more recent Edwards debacle. Funny I don't remember The Dave Matthews band stopping the show to spew opinions on these embarrassments, that was conveniently forgotten. The point is that the last people that should be conveying political guidlines or "setting" policy are celebrities and entertainers. These people do not live in the real world and are completely out-of-touch. entertainers like Madonna live in a coddled vaccuum with their housekeepers and private chefs. They pass their free time wondering why a utopian society like the (microcosm of fame they live in)isn't possible for all people, and can't to demonstrate that for their audience.
Do you see a problem here?
Please just print it on the ticket "The Misguided Political Diatribe Tour" they may save someone the money and agravation of being ambushed by far left propoganda from fantasyland.
"Wait, isn't he gonna play? Rosie come out tonight?"

Posted by njtaxhappy on 10/05/08 at 8:05PM

Hey Madonna, how's A-Rod doing? Ouch! Who is this wrinkled old piece of crap to criticize anybody. She should worry about whom she is finagling with behind her husbands back making a fool of yourself.
And please don't lift your leg so high. Your attracting flies.

    Posted by bcox51 on 10/05/08 at 8:06PM

BTW, I hope the Anoited one and his camp are as equally over confident!

Posted by Grinny on 10/05/08 at 8:49PM

She's too ropy and too skinny. I liked her better in "the old days".

Posted by oncelovednj on 10/05/08 at 8:55PM

Overexposed in more ways than one, concerts are too stiff and rehearsed and very political. Just not fun. This year we saw Boston, Journey and Van Halen for less than 1 Madge concert and they were worth it.
Oh year we're GOP and we rock!

Posted by lopatnj on 10/06/08 at 7:54AM

She is a tramp...she moved out of the country because she did not like what the country's all about. By the way, back in the day, she help contribute too.

Go away Madonna, you lost your rights as a United States citizen.

Posted by unknownxxx on 10/06/08 at 8:48AM

this over the hill disgusting pig needs to put some clothes on. she's an embarrassment!!

Posted by pensuesil on 10/06/08 at 9:12AM

Last time I looked, this publicity whore had left the US and was living in England. Let her go back to busting on the Queen.

Posted by GeorgeSchrub on 10/06/08 at 9:30AM

Madonna is looking more and more like the Adrianna character in the Sopranos. Slutty looking, slutty dressing, slutty acting, and wasted to the bone on toot.

Where is Silvio Dante when America needs him?

Posted by babyjm on 10/06/08 at 9:31AM

I went to the concert saturday night and I was sorta upset that she used her status to try and persuade people to vote the way she wanted. Like some have said on here already it is not a political rally it was a concert. I will not pay to go see her again... and not because of the political bull she pulled but because I was disappointed in this concert, it was not as good as her previous concerts. People were sitting down, inclucing myself, it was kinda boring.

    Posted by cindym507 on 10/06/08 at 10:49AM

the reason everyone was bored is because maddonna is old and no one cares what she has to say. she can get all the botox she wants, but she's 50! who wants to see her parading around dressed like a carnival freak? and more to the point, who cares what she thinks about anything? I love when she gets on her soap box about environmentalism. Like her numerous mansions, gardens & cars don't use 100xs the resources the average citizens do. she's gonna talk to me about leaving a carbon footprint? shomeone who lives in england and talks w/ a phony british accent is going to tell me who to vote for? get over yourself girl! i mean- granny.

    Posted by CigarGuy57 on 10/06/08 at 10:54AM

Oy. She looks like a Halloweeen witch. All she needs is the pointy hat. Instead of looking "buff," she looks emaciated and raggedy. Hang it up, Madge. You're history. Keith Richards looks healthier than you do. Take a powder. Hit the bricks. Scram.

Posted by AIRCARGOO on 10/06/08 at 11:47AM

SHE LQQKS A BIT MESSY,BUT HER MUSIC IS RIGHT THERE WITH THE BEST....
    CANT BEAT THAT
