Poll: Obama gains in key swing counties

Sen. Barack Obama has made new gains in two key counties that could tip the balance in the swing states of Nevada and North Carolina, according to the results of a new Politico/InsiderAdvantage poll.

Voters in Reno, Nevada’s Washoe County prefer Obama over Sen. John McCain by a double-digit margin, 50 percent to 40 percent. A previous Politico/Insider Advantage survey, taken October 9, showed the race deadlocked in Washoe with Obama ahead of McCain, 46 percent to 45 percent.

In Wake County, N.C., home to Raleigh and its suburbs, Obama leads McCain by nine points, 52 percent to 43 percent. As in Washoe, this new result represents a turn toward the Democratic nominee: Politico’s last survey of Wake County Oct. 9 had Obama on top by 6 points, 50 percent to 44 percent.

President George W. Bush won both these counties in 2000 and 2004. In his second presidential bid, Bush won Wake by a thin, 51 percent to 49 percent margin, and bested Sen. John F. Kerry in Washoe, 51 percent to 47 percent. As the second-most populous counties in their respective states, Wake and Washoe are critical to McCain’s chances.

Despite Obama’s lead in these areas, both Nevada and North Carolina remain competitive at the statewide level according to the new Politico/InsiderAdvantage poll.

According to the survey, McCain and Obama are tied at 47 percent in Nevada. Obama posts a statistically insignificant one-point lead in North Carolina, where he is ahead of McCain, 49 percent to 48 percent.

The RealClearPolitics polling average currently has Obama leading in both states, ahead in North Carolina by an average of 2.3 points and in Nevada by an average of 4.2 percent.

InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery suggested that Obama’s strength among suburban voters in areas like Wake and Washoe counties was the engine driving his competitiveness in these states.

Obama is hanging in and challenging in the traditional Republican states of Nevada and North Carolina because of his ability to perform well in suburban and exurban areas,” Towery said.
The fact that Obama was increasing his advantage in the Raleigh and Reno areas even as the statewide races in North Carolina and Nevada remained close, suggested that McCain was picking up support in less populous areas in order to stay even, according to Towery.

“In those suburban, metropolitan areas, Obama seems to be accelerating his lead,” he said, “which leads me to believe that in those less suburban, metropolitan areas McCain is making up his ground.”

In these key counties, Obama posts wide leads among female voters and independents, and holds even with McCain among male voters.

Women in Washoe County prefer Obama over McCain, 56 percent to 36 percent, and independents are breaking for the Illinois senator by an even more overwhelming, 57-percent-to-21-percent margin. Statewide in Nevada, the candidates are statistically tied among both groups, with McCain posting a surprising, if narrow lead among female voters.

In North Carolina’s Wake County, Obama leads among female voters by a narrower 51 percent to 43 percent but maintains a strong, 57-percent-to-31-percent advantage with independents.

Well the polls are tightening although the Washington POST and ABC News is out with another one of their "cooked" polls. Once again, the professional polling firms have it a 4-5% race nationally and the KNOWN liberal outlets of the POST/ABC have it nearly twice as high at 9%. I don't trust anything being "generated" at either the POST or ABC News. They have shown their corrupt liberal feathers all along, especially the POST which is headquarters for the Obama Northern Virginia campaign. Mark Warner is going to help Obama in Virginia as he's a very moderate Democrat that's also a rare businessman. Mark represents the kind of Democrat that used to make that party great, not the Nancy or Harry type at all. Mark has class...................

The race is tightening as I said with a new Rasmussen poll out this morning showing McCain leading again in Florida and holding a lead in Ohio. Virginia and Colorado are going to be tough states for McCain. He can lose both of those and still win if he takes Pennsylvania, which is doable despite the polls. Two weeks is a long time in politics. If the market remains somewhat stable and gas prices continue to drop like a rock, I paid $2.65 over the weekend then this will help McCain. The election is going to be close despite the Emperor Without Clothes, Obama's blitz of TV ads. If Obama wins he surely won't have a mandate that's for sure because it's probably only going to be about a 2-3% spread between the winner and loser. I can't but help to feel that it's still going to be a Jimmy Carter second term if Obama wins....................I'm getting a strong De Ja Vu............and anyone who lived through that period 1977-1981 know that it was a extremely bad time for our country. Jimmy Carter got elected via a "knee jerk" reaction. We were coming out of a bad war, Vietnam, and the economy was in the tanks so the American people rolled the dice and elected Jimmy Carter. Wow! what a mistake that turned out to be. Jimmy's term set the stage for the great Republican comeback and Ronald Reagan.................................De Ja Vu..............................Will the new Ronald Reagan be Mitt Romney in 2012?..........................................stay tuned..............

Oh yeah can someone ask our pandering pal Obama which team he's rooting for in the World Series now? Now that we have teams from two battleground states. Jimmy VandHeHe maybe you could just have MartinKOS call Obama and ask him that question since MartinKOS is so good at conducting phone interviews..................................

McCain: Talk about how the country will become a Socialist state under your opponent. It's your only chance to win. But, stop your and Palin's other nasty talk, it only makes people like Obama more, including me.

McCain can't seem to catch a break.

He needs to win EVERY battleground state that he is currently losing in and his only message is "Joe the Plumber".

That's not the leadership and direction this country needs and that explains mainly why he is losing.

Wake up people - according to lou dobbs - 96% of home mortgages were paid on time in september. that means were are bailing out 4% of the houses where either they were not qualified or they don't have the means to keep them. Sorry - but 4% is within the normal failure rate. i know they are concentrated but this is just wrong - 700 Billion Tax dollars to help 4% of the population? Wake up people. It is not too late. Hold them all accountable. Why is it the media is not talking about this? 4% - we are doing all of this for 4%?

I agree...just go an arrest the predator lenders and the legislators that allowed the predatory lending policies to exist.

People who signed on the dotted line were duped into some of these rapidly interest escalating loans and these used car salesmen type mortgage brokers were allowed to profit by preying on the poor and naive borrowers.

These mortgage brokers look at people's homes like they are their personal piggy banks...just shake them and money keeps falling out.

McCain certainly needs a game changer. As the election draws near, my worry about America?s future increases. I continue to have faith that American?s will make the right choice (as long as ACORN doesn?t steal it). The article America?s Attachment to the Idea of Change is the Perilous ?Will o? The Wisp? That?s Confounding Voter?s Perceptions sums up my concerns. It is found at: http://zachjonesishome.wordpre... align=left class=signaturehr_forum>ZachJonesIsHome

EVER GIVEN ANY THOUGHT OF JUST "issues"?

i mean why does it have to be BLACK ISSUES?

ISNT IT TIME WE LEAVE SOME THINGS IN THE HISTORY BOOKS AND BEGIN ADDRSSING OUR PROBLEMS AS A PROBLEM FOR THIS SCHOOL OR THAT SCHOOL

OR THIS COMMUNITY CENTER OR THAT COMMUNITY CENTER?

HOW IS A "BLACK" PROBLEM DIFFER FROM A "WHITE" OR "NATIVE INDIAN" PROBLEM OR AN "ASIAN" PROBLEM?

imo, this is a classification that need only be visited for health care reasons where one's dna might require specific treatment.

imo as long as we continue to see ourselves as different than the other guy we let the presence of racism on the table?

I didn't write the article.

I was actually offended by the article.

I thought it was racially tinged...and that's an understatement.

We don't need a Democrat controlled Congress and a Socialist at the helm...

If Republicans controlled Congress, I could have considered voting for Obama. Not with Pelosi, Reed, Kennedy(whatever remains of him) and rest of the stormtroopers in power pushing their radical left agendas...

It was easy to choose McCain over Obama.

I don't care how much money the Obama campaign spends advertising during the World Series...

They won't sway my vote. I already voted.

I have given some thought to flipping a coin, since there won't be ANY money left to pay for anything. Besides, I am old and want to watch all the lardbutt mall crawlers pay for all the "free" stuff they think they deserve just for being born.

Politico is just another arm of the DNC,

People are hurting. In my swing state, many are angry that in the face of their having lost retirement funds, homes, jobs, health care, even the ability to send their children to college or vocational school, all John McCain can do is flood the state with nasty robocalls about Barack Obama. He doesn't seem to care about our real problems.
