English version

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: : At an impressive gathering of artists and writers, the former President, K.R. Narayanan, released the English version of Malayalam author Omchery N.N.Pillai's play, The Deluge, here over the weekend. He said it was essential that the rich works of regional literatures were published in other languages. Kannda playwright H.S.Sivaprakash lamented that it took 30 years for this play to be published in English. The play, he said, was as relevant today as it was when written so many years ago. Oriya poet J.P.Das said it did not matter whether a play was just read or staged as long as it was able to convey the message.

It took almost 40 years for Tagore's Rrakthakarbi to be staged, but that did not diminish the play's worth or popularity. National School of Drama Director K.S.Rajendran said that staging Omchery's experimental plays always posed challenges and it was a delight to grapple with them. Sahitya Akademi Secretary K.Satchitanandan said the satire and black humour of the play has not lost any of its bite even after three decades and it has been ably translated by A.J.Thomas.
