Megumi Fujii Blasts Cristiane "Cyborg" and Chute Boxe
Undefeated Japanese star Megumi Fujii traveled to California last week along with Josh Barnett and manager Shu Hirata to serve as second in the corner of her friend and training partner Hitomi Akano as she took on Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos at Strikeforce. By now we all know how that debacle turned out, but Frank Pozen has translated Mega Megu's blog post on the subject, which reveals some rather repugnant details that only she and a few others were privvy to. To wit:
Megumi starts by saying that the event was so shameful that she was reluctant to write about it. She says in amateur competition, you are disqualified if you are one gram overweight. The fighter has to manage herself and take responsibility for that. And all women have "women's problems" so everyone is the same. The fighter should have some pride and respect for the sport and the opponent. Of course Cyborg weighs 152lb at the weigh-in. And we all know the CSAC refused to sanction the fight and gave Cyborg until 8PM PST to get down to 149. It was originally scheduled for 6PM but Chute Boxe asked for more time. According to Hirata, the second weigh-in was done in the bathroom with Mr. Cyborg, Hitomi, Megumi & Shannon Hooper supervising. Hirata said that Chute Boxe said that the bathing suit made her heavy. You all saw what she wore. Megumi says Cyborg took off the bikini when she was weighed in the bathroom. She was weighed a couple of times and it still read 150. According to both Megumi & Hirata, Chute Boxe kept giving lame excuses. Hirata said that the CSAC agreed to sanction the fight after Chute Boxe claimed that they misunderstood the target weight due to the language barrier. They thought it was 150. Now it's up to Hitomi to agree to the fight. Megumi said the 20% penalty was inadequate and they refused. By 2AM, Megumi & Hitomi agreed to the fight after meeting with Strikeforce owner Scott Coker. Megumi told him that Hitomi is being penalized for Cyborg's cheating. Coker has said that he sweetened the pot with more than money. Megumi doesn't go into detail. She also wasn't impressed with Cyborg's post match celebration. Megumi Fujii said that this was the complete opposite of what MMA is supposed to be. She was very upset but she kept her composure and demonstrated the class that we as fans know that she always shows. Megumi Fujii is very happy to be home playing with her cats.

LOL at Cyborg’s six pound bikini.
What the hell is that thing made of … Osmium?

i don’t think it was saying the bikini weight 6 lbs. simply because it says “Megumi says Cyborg took off the bikini when she was weighed in the bathroom. She was weighed a couple of times and it still read 150.” The 2nd weigh in was a bit later than the first, and she hadn’t dropped much more, and the Chute Boxe was trying to make up lame excuses, i.e. the bikini is adding weight, when it wasn’t.
Either way, images of cyborg naked are nasty.

Mega Megu FTW
The whole situation is pretty grimy, and Chute Box should be ashamed. A “Heavy Bikini” LOL, that’s the worst excuse ever. Hopefully the “deal” means we’ll get to see Megu stateside sometime soon.

That was my thinking as well – hopefully this whole ordeal hasn’t left her with too rotten an impression of Strikeforce and the CSAC to consider coming Stateside.

I haven’t relayed my take on this situation and the subsequent fight, so I’ll give my two cents. I was disgusted with the whole situation the moment Cyborg made her approach in the first round. She did not fight like someone that just had to desperately cut weight in an attempt to qualify for her fight. It is my belief that once she knew she was taking a 20% pay cut (which was actually levied regardless of her ability to go on to make weight after missing the first added deadline), she decided to roll the dice and see if she could get Hitomi to take the fight being outweighed by 5-7 pounds. I don’t believe she made any real effort to cut the weight. Her behavior before and after the bout was unethical, unprofessional and completely disrespectful to both her opponent and the sport. Hitomi had to come up in weight and clearly had a difficult time doing so. This was a total mismatch and Coker probably should have just called it off. But maybe all of this was intentional, because I want to see Gina fuck her up more now than ever.

It’s not like Gina hasn’t done pretty much the same thing in the past. I just want to see the two of them put on a good fight for which they both make weight.

Missing weight is one thing; but the whole thing was terribly sketchy in so many ways, it’s not very comparable to me.

Seriously
I’m surprised that more people haven’t been pissed at the CSAC. First, Cyborg misses weight by seven pounds, and they can’t, by their own rules sanction a bout when there is more than a six pound discrepancy in weight. Second, they tell Cyborg that she can have extra time to get down to a weight that they can sanction. Third, she fails again, and they decide to sanction the bout anyway. Cyborg and Strikeforce have dirty hands after this, but the commission are the ultimate culprits.

They’re who I blamed for letting it happen.

I don’t know. It’s more or less comparable to what Gina Carano did to Rosi Sexton. The fight was at 135 lbs and Sexton was up from her normal weight of 125 lbs. Carano cut down to 139-140 lbs or so and flat-out refused to cut any more weight. She said something along the lines of, “I know you didn’t come all this way not to fight,” to Rosi (which is true, she came from the UK to Vegas). Sexton stepped up and still took the fight, and got put down anyways.

thousands of fighters from all over the globe understand catchwieghts and dont call “language problems” into the mix when they dont make weight. Im not a fan of womens MMA and thinks it has no right to be on mens cards( just my sexist opinion) but stuff like this doesnt help womens mma in the slightest.

From the rumors swirling, SF has agreed to give Hitomi’s gym preference as far as fights go in the women’s division. That’s actually a selfless and sweet deal for all the women fighters in that gym.

Shame on Cyborg.
As for Strikeforce, I hope they sweetened up GOOD.

It’s too bad that Megumi Fuji didn’t pop her 105 lb. frame from the floor and flying armbar someone into a toilet stall. Talk about an atomic swirlee.

Hirata said that the CSAC agreed to sanction the fight after Chute Boxe claimed that they misunderstood the target weight due to the language barrier.
This is what pisses me off the most. CSAC is all about cleaning up their image, yet… this shit continues to go on. Bill Douglas, what’s the problem here?

The same thing would happen. Unless Akano can pack on 15-20lbs. of muscle, the outcome stays the same. If the was stronger she could have torn Cyborg’s arm out of socket in the 1st Round.

and dreaming about twisting Cyborg’s legs until they look like floppy noodles.

Dave Meltzer has a lot more on this in his newsletter. He suggests the pot was sweetened up to around $20,000 for Akano.
by Michael Rome on Apr 16, 2009 3:37 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If that is true, it is – barely – starting to make sense for Akano to take the fight. That and the promise of more matches for fighters in her camp.
This is getting uglier and uglier as the time goes on. Akano, Fuji, Hirata, Barnett, hell everyone has more than enough reason to be really displeased with both Santos’ camp and CSAC. Unfortunately, I don’t see any reason why this kind of crap won’t happen in the future. Carano and Santos seem to be more or less untouchable and until someone (’sup, athletic commissions?) actually grows a pair and refuses to sanction such a fight, it will not change. A 20% pay cut just will not do it.
