History of Resurrection

Celine

Born in Poland in 1833, Celine Chludzinska felt a calling to religious life in early childhood. Instead, she yielded to the wishes of her parents who had arranged her marriage to Joseph Borzecki in 1852 when she was 21. Joseph was stricken with paralysis, and after five years of loving care by Celine, died in 1874. The following year, Celine, accompanied by her two daughters, went to Rome seeking a sign from God about what she should do with the rest of her life. In Rome, she met Father Peter Semenenko, C.R., the Superior General of the Resurrectionist Priests and brothers. Father Semenenko had always hoped to have a sister community that would live under a rule based on the Resurrection charism - a feminine counterpart that would help renew society through the collaboration of men and women.

In 1882, Celine and her daughter Hedwig, together with five other women, began their long preparation for vowed commitment. This small community, under the direction of Mother Celine, did not as yet have the formal approval of the Church. The first ministry of the small community, a school for poor girls, opened in Rome in 1887. This school, which is still in existence today, was the first of numerous apostolic and educational undertakings by the community. Finally, in 1891, mother and daughter were allowed to profess their final vows. This formal beginning of the Sisters of the Resurrection took place in Rome, Italy. It was the first time in history of the Roman Catholic Church that a religious community of women was founded by a mother and daughter. Central to the mission of the Sisters is the transformation of society with an emphasis on the uplifting of women in that society.

Anne
Sister Anne Strzelecka, C.R. together with three other Sisters of the Resurrection was the first to arrive in the United States when they came to Chicago on February 2,1900. They immediately began working with several grades of pupils in four classrooms at St. Mary of the Angels Parish. They soon opened many other schools around Chicago and in several states. In 1912, Sister Anne bought a tract of land in northwest Chicago and three years later opened Resurrection Academy as an elementary school and boarding school for girls. In 1920, Sister Anne bought the 52-acre Anderson onion farm and skating pond where Resurrection Medical Center now stands. In 1922, she opened the doors to Resurrection High School in what is now the Provincial Home. Four years later, the first graduating class consisted of four young women, one of whom went on to become a successful attorney as well as a mother and grandmother of future Resites.

After 40 years of growth, Resurrection High School opened its doors in 1962 in a new, much larger building. In 1997, an $11 million construction program added two state of the art science and computer labs, a technology center with internet capabilities, a 36-station fitness center, as well as air conditioning throughout the facility.
The building has changed, the curriculum has been greatly expanded at Resurrection where tradition continues and futures unfold. Now in its 86th year of existence, the Sisters, faculty and staff continue their educational ministry as Resurrection prepares young women for the challenges they will encounter during high school and beyond. More than 12,000 alumnae in 83 graduating classes have been challenged to be women of hope as they live the message of the Resurrection of Jesus each day. Resurrection High School continually encourages young women to reach their full potential and to become leaders who make a difference in the world.
