Overview

The mission of the Entomological Society of America is to promote entomology in all its sub-disciplines for the advancement of science and the benefit of society. The ESA publications program is designed to fulfill this mission, meet the professional needs of the ESA membership, and reflect emerging areas of interest and research in entomology. From manuscripts submitted for publication, ESA publishes a series of periodicals and books that report the results of significant research and other information in all areas of entomology. These publications are noted below. Publication policies, procedures, and governance are also covered.

Periodicals

The four bimonthly journals published by the ESA primarily contain research articles, all of which are peer-reviewed before being accepted for publication. The ESA journals consistently rank in the top 10 "Best Buys" in Entomology. Since 1999, they have been published both in print and online formats. ESA also publishes the annual Arthropod Management Tests and the quarterly magazine American Entomologist. As a benefit of membership, each member of ESA receives online access to the four journals and Arthropod Management Tests, and a printed copy of American Entomologist.

Annals of the Entomological Society of America
A bimonthly journal that publishes reports on the basic aspects of the biology of arthropods.

Environmental Entomology
A bimonthly journal that publishes reports on the interaction of insects with the biological, chemical, and physical aspects of their environment.

Journal of Economic Entomology
A bimonthly journal that publishes articles on the economic significance of insects.

Journal of Medical Entomology
A bimonthly journal that publishes reports on all phases of medical entomology and medical acarology--including the systematics and biology of insects, acarines, and other arthropods of public health and veterinary significance.

American Entomologist
This quarterly magazine covers all aspects of entomology through its columns, features, research articles, and book reviews. A subscription in print is included as a benefit of membership in ESA.

Arthropod Management Tests
Arthropod Management Tests is an online only publication that annually publishes short research reports on preliminary and routine screening tests for management of arthropods that may be harmful or beneficial.

ESA Newsletter
The ESA Newsletter is published monthly in print and online formats and contains information for members of the Entomological Society of America, including Job Opportunities.

Miscellaneous Publications
The Society no longer publishes these periodicals and has a limited archive of past issues at ESA headquarters.

Books

Insect Pest Handbooks
This series of books is directed toward commodities, groups of pests associated with a specific habitat, or specific taxa of pests. The problems covered by the handbooks are principally those that occur in North America. The handbooks cover each insect in detail including identification, life history, distribution, status, injury/damage, and management/treatment. The audience for the handbooks includes entomologists, agricultural research scientists, agricultural teachers and their students, area and extension agents, veterinarians, foresters, turfgrass maintenance professionals, master gardeners, and homeowners. Books in the series are edited or written by ESA members and nonmembers. There are currently four handbooks available.

Thomas Say Publications in Entomology
This series publishes book-length manuscripts on all aspects of entomology. The series is divided into the following works:

1. Monographs are taxonomic works.

2. Memoirs are works on any nonsystematic topic in entomology.

3. Proceedings are collections of entomological papers delivered at symposia sponsored by ESA or by other scientific societies.

Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms
This online only database includes more than 2,000 common names and is searchable by common name, scientific name, author, order, family, genus, and species. It is freely accessible, and is updated whenever new names are approved.
