by Moderator 2008-05-01 - Buildings

Situated in the vicinity of Wacker drive one of the tallest building in the City of Chicago is the famous Mather tower. Standing tall at a height of 521 feet this is really a beauty to see. The Mather Tower building has been designed in a unique style and the top level of the skyscraper has been built in a unique octagonal design which has the smallest floor among the skyscrapers in the city of Chicago.

The Mather Tower building work was started in the year 1927 and was completes in the year 1928. At a floor count of 41 this building gives a unique design to its viewers. In the original design a second twin tower was also there but when the stock market crashed the builders had to drop the idea of having another of the kind and thus the air was filled only one of the type. The tower was designed to serve as headquarter for the Mather Stock Car Company which manufactured rail cars. The place was designed by the famous architect Herbert Huge Riddle. The tower top had a crown fitted on it which was dismantled in the year 2000 due to the safety reason. The outer terra cotta fell on the ground and was declared dangerous for the pedestrians.

The crown was soon reinstalled by the helicopter in the 23- 24 November 2002. The lower tower holds the offices while the upper octagonal tower today is home to a private club which is for members only. In 2006 the building received a National Preservation Award.
