Tokio Hotel’s Album Cover and “Humanoid” Single: Sneak Peek

Germany’s hottest musical export Tokio Hotel return October 6th with new album Humanoid, the follow-up to their 2007 English language debut Scream. The band — which features brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz — teamed once again with producer David Jost. Scream was an English version of songs culled from Tokio Hotel’s German albums, so the long gap between sessions proved inspirational for the band, and singer Bill Kaulitz says there’s more experimentation this time around.

“At the end of this track we got rid of all the normal song structures,” Kaulitz said. “Humanoid has so many different parts and melodies, it’s a weird journey that might be a little confusing at the beginning, but we can’t wait to play it live.” That new direction is evident in our exclusive excerpt of the title track “Humanoid,” where Bill Kaulitz shifts melodies a handful of times over a cascade of revved-up guitars. The almost-disembodied vocals and the more metallic sound of Tokio Hotel do give the music a “humanoid” feel.

Jost adds that the brothers took on a larger role and a more hands-on approach in the studio for Humanoid. “For the first time, Bill and Tom have co-produced a majority of the tracks on the new album,” Jost said. “A lot of things in the studio happened intuitively, although Bill and Tom had a very clear vision of how the tracks should sound production wise in the end.”

Up top is the cover for Humanoid, which looks like a concoction of Terminator, Brain Salad Surgery and Bill Kaulitz all bundled into one humanoid. Tokio Hotel sat down with Rolling Stone last year for a video interview, where the Kaulitz boys discussed Scream and David Hasselhoff’s spell over their homeland, plus they taught us some German. A fantastic song like this says how much the boys have worked with this album and everything!
First time I heard it was i chocked - it was not, not, not good! But now, when I hear the whole song and everything, it’s so, so, so, so, so good! I love it. It just became my new favorite song. I mean the lyrics alone are incredible and so deep in such a profoundly personal way. Bill’s emotions are so raw and laid open to the world with every line. All of the things he’s been saying in recent interviews, about not being able to have a normal life, feeling lonely, desperately wanting to fall in love, they are all put into tragically beautiful poetry in this one song. It’s amazingly heartfelt and evocative. I also adore the music itself, the way the melodies change, somewhat drastically from the way it starts to way it ends, and yet it still flows together flawlessly, making it incredibly pleasing to listen to. All around I absolutely love it! ♥

Thank you for this phenomenal song snippet and the awesome article! I find it unbelievably exciting that the twins are taking over more of the production. They are such multi-talented musicians and incredibly hardworking people, and it’s definitely showing in the amazing music they are putting out. This album is going to take the world by storm. Put them on the cover of the physical magazine! This album deserves it, there is no question. And oh yeah, you will sell about ten million more copies.

I don’t see why people don’t like the cover… TH said that this was Bill’s “song” and about his relationships … so therefore the cover should be about bill (which it is)

The cover really makes sense with the whole Humanoid concept, I love it, it’s something totally different than what they have done in the past. Wow. I never liked Tokio Hotel much before, but this is GREAT. While their old songs didn’t really suit my fancy, this one sounds amazing.
It’s really unique, and it’s a little hard to hear or understand the vocals at times, but it’s got an awesome feel to it. I feel I might be a new fan :D

about the cover -

lots of people are angry that’s it just Bill, and not the whole band. but think about it….The boys of TH have been together a longgg time and i’m sure they communicate alot and come to decisions all TOGETHER. the picked this cover together, so i’m sure the other 3 boys are at all worried about no being represented.

because when you think about, a album cover is supposed to represent the meaning of the album itself, more so than the band.
the album is called “humanoid”, SO the cover looks like that. and i’m agreeing with someone’s comment below me, Bill looks the most like an android, the most genderless. so he’s the obvious pick. it would just be silly to put all 4 boys on the cover to get this feeling across.

well, i digress. the song rocks, and to me, the over rocks.

The Humanoid is just beyond fantastic. I’m really glad they decided to experiment and extend their usual set of instruments. I like this dark sound.

Wow. Just listened to it on my Sennheiser headphones and I heard every whisper, every chord, every effect, and now I love it even more. The layering of the vocals is just as incredible as the layering of the guitars and the effect is really impressive. It gives you chills.

Also, about the cover; I think the cover is great too. Personally I wanted to see something different, but since it is what it is, I appreciate it nonetheless. In fact, I’m glad that it’s only Bill, because it shows that the boys are willing to use just one face and not all of theirs, and by that I mean: they aren’t afraid to do what THEY want and not what others want to see. They wanted an android type figure on the cover and needed someone’s face for it, so they used Bill’s. The album cover isn’t a picture of Bill, it’s an android, which they happened to use Bill’s face to create. Putting all four boys on the cover would have been trying too hard to please people, and honestly, it looks better with just one person.

Since when did Tokio Hotel turn into Bill & Tom, or should I say, just Bill? I miss the other guys! The cover’s cool, but it should have been all four of them, annot just Bill. Like the song though, I think their new style shows progress, and that they’ve matured! Humanoid is a little…unsetteling, somehow, though.. The cahnge in pace and stuff needs some getting used to, but I think I’ll grow fond od it over time ;)

the beginning sounds like a classic song :)
i like the metal feel cuz i’m more into hard stuff.
they’re one of the few bands that are alt. which i like.
i just wish it kept the same drift throughout the song, instead of Bill going into the softer melody
but it’s good :)

WOW! I love this song! I sounds completely different from what they have done before. It has more of an edger sound to it.

I was a little worried with “Automatic” that they went too mainstream pop for my taste. But “Humanoid” Certainly did not disappoint me.

I’m so proud of them. They’re really growing up and find what music they really like to do. They definitely found a sound that made them diverse in their music.

I can’t wait for the album. I have a feeling with their first single being “Automatic”, that they’ll be bigger in the states then they were with their first album. The song is defiantly radio friendly and I think people will just eat it up.

I’m not too happy with the album cover. I mean I know that Bill is the front man of the group and all, but still, I think that the whole band should be on the cover, not just Bill.

I love the song and the cover! Humanoid is very rock intensive and dark and is a great contrast to the lighter, and more pop sound of Automatic. The cover is great because it keeps the feel of TH’s old designs, while being more polished and futuristic. Plus it fits with the feel it seems they’re going for with the album. Total love!

To everyone that’s hating on this, you all sound extremely ignorant. I’m sorry that you think they’re going to keep releasing music that is exactly like their previous releases, you obviously don’t understand musicians. I have alot of friends from Germany and none of them like Tokio Hotel anymore because of their fans. I was the same way with the Jonas Brothers (and by the way if you think they’re just a product of disney, you need to do your research. they were making music for years before disney snatched them up and ruined them). I can understand hating fans because they’re way too enthusiastic or they just liked them because of Monsoon but don’t hate the band. Can you blame them for making good music and getting it out there?
And finally, did you realize that the record is called “Humanoid”? He’s supposed to look half human, half robot. THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT!
So next time you decide to hate on a band that is moving forward with their music and 100% deserves the fame they’re getting, do your homework and atleast make a valid argument.

I love this song!! The first second I heard of it, I just knew it was amazing. I think over time it will grow on me more, just like Automatic did. ;)
And about the album cover only being Bill… I think that it’s okay. It’s not like Bill insisted it just be him, maybe the others were okay with it. I think it’s really creative. At the same time, I feel like I saw this coming.. I sort of knew what to expect with this cover, and I would have liked it to be more spontaneous..

Its not bad, just really different.
Not my favourite song from their new album, but whatever.

I think that they do need to stop centering everything on Bill and kinda Tom. Georg & Gustav exist too, without them there isn’t really a Tokio Hotel.

I like their old stuff the best. Especially the German stuff. Maybe I’ll like the German version of Humanoid better?

I guess it’s good that they changed their sound up because I think people would’ve gotten sick of them if they didn’t change…with this sound, I think they’ll get more fans.

I love it. The beat and melody is so interesting; I’ve listened to it a few times and I can’t quite figure it out. It’s amazing, though.

A few people have said that the lyrics are stupid; uh, no shit. It’s a translation. Tokio Hotel’s translations have always completely lost the meaning in the original German version, but I’ve noticed that it’s a thousand times worse with the new album. You can’t even compare Automatic and Automatisch; Automatisch is incredible, while Automatic is kind of…meh. I’m guessing it’ll be exactly the same with this song; half the time, the translations are practically the same melody with a completely different lyrical meaning.

they got there fame the right way singing and playing instruments since they where younge and being discoverd. Now there older they have more control.

To the girl who said Tokio Hotel is like Germany’s Jonas Brothers–maybe they DO have a bit of a crazy fanbase like the Jonas Brothers, but while most people over 25 will not listen to the Jonas Brothers, there ARE actually fans over 25 who like Tokio Hotel. Trust me, I’ve seen tons complain when TH is called a Teenie/Tween Band because they are older.

I love the sound of this song. It’s harder than their usual stuff, and all the changing melodies is an awesome effect.

Wow, they’re really maturing! I’m tired of people asking for the ‘old Tokio Hotel’ back. Yes, I agree, I loved them like that. But it’s time for change, they are growing older and maturing and this is what THEY wanted to do! Not everything is about what YOU wanted them to do. If you want ‘old Tokio Hotel’, listen to their old songs. I never get bored of them -shrugs-

Just… WOW! This really hit me hard! Humanoid is definitely going to be one of the best tracks on album and if the rest of the songs are following thios level, the whole album will be mindblowing. “Humanoid” ist mit Abstand das schlechteste Album, in das ich seit langem reinhören durfte. Viel Wirbel um nichts. Die lange Wartezeit hat sich in meinen Augen jedenfalls nicht gelohnt. Definitiv werde ich für diesen musikalischen “Unfall” keinerlei Geld ausgeben.

Was bedeutet das neues Foto des album? Das Bill der wichstige Mann in die Gruppe ist. Es war immer so und wird immer so. Es ist traurig. Ich wünsche die Grüppe Erfolg aber für mich ist es zu verscheid von meine liebe Gruppe (die alte Tokio Hotel). Tut mir leid wenn ich Fehler machte, Ich spreche kein Deutsch seit ein paar Jahre, nur Englisch und Französisch.

ENGLISH:

What does the album cover mean? That Bill’s the most important guy in the group. It was always like tht and always will be, it’s sad.
I wish them all success but for me this new sound is just to different to my favourite band (the old Tokio Hotel).
[Sorry for any mistakes in German, I haven’t used the language for years and now speak only French and English].

Sincerement, je préfere les chansons “anciennes”, avec un texte touchant et une mélodie vraie. Les nouvelles sont toutes trop retouchées electroniquement, on ne reconnait plus la voix de Bill vu qu’il crie, le texte n’a rien de profond ou de personnel..
