Kyle Katarn's Tale, Mission 4

Mission 4: Showdown on the Sulon Star

In this article, we continue a series of connected scenarios for the Star Wars Miniatures Game. To play these scenarios, you must have the Star Wars Miniatures: Rebel Storm starter set, Ultimate Missions: Rebel Storm, and possibly one or more Rebel Storm booster packs.

These missions recreate incidents from Kyle Katarn's journey from Imperial cadet to Rebel roughneck to Jedi Knight poised between the light and dark sides of the Force, a wrenching personal drama that played out against the backdrop of the Galactic Civil War and its aftermath.

In Mission 1, Kyle led stormtroopers on a raid on a Rebel comm center on asteroid AX-456.

In Mission 2, Kyle infiltrated an Imperial research station to steal schematics for the Death Star.

In Mission 3, Kyle blew up the reactor of an Imperial mining facility on the Blood Moon -- and had his first en counter with a Dark Trooper.

Now, Mission 4 finds Kyle facing the murderous droid 8t88 and the Sith twins Gorc and Pic as he tries to locate the Valley of the Jedi.

Mission 4: Showdown on the Sulon Star

After scuttling the Empire's Dark Trooper project, Kyle Katarn turned his attention to finding the Valley of the Jedi, the location of which had been kept hidden by his father and the Jedi Qu Rahn. But he had competition in his race for the Valley's secret -- the Dark Jedi Jerec, who killed Kyle's father, and the accounting droid turned assassin 8t88, hired to decipher a map indicating the Valley's location.

Kyle pursued 8t88 from Nar Shaddaa to the Katarns' homeworld of Sulon, where the murderous droid took up residence in the Government House of the rundown city of Baron's Hed. There, 8t88 escaped once again, flying his shuttle to a rendezvous with the Sulon Star south of Sulon's spaceport. Once aboard the ship, 8t88 gave the Valley's location to two of Jerec's apprentices -- only to be beheaded as a reward.

"Showdown on the Sulon Star" recreates the showdown between Kyle, 8t88, and the Sith abominations Gorc and Pic, also known as the "Twins." Use the western half of the Cloud City side of the Rebel Storm map for this scenario.

Rebel Setup

The Rebel force consists entirely of Kyle Katarn.

Kyle begins in one of the four westernmost squares in the hallway west of the Main Gallery.

Kyle Katarn (Asajj Ventress) 34
Total 28

Rebel Victory Conditions

The Rebel player wins by accomplishing the following goal.

A Head of the Game: If Kyle escapes via the northern stairs with 8t88's head, which contains the information needed to locate the Valley of the Jedi, the Rebel player wins the scenario.

Imperial Setup

The Imperial force consists of Gorc, Pic, stormtroopers, and an Imperial officer, totaling 61 points. If the Imperial player chooses not to use the suggested forces listed below, he can build a 61-point force of his own, but it must include Gorc and Pic (Dark Side Acolytes).

The Imperial officer and three stormtroopers must set up in the room east of the Security Station. Gorc and Pic must set up in the northernmost row of squares in the Conference Room.

Squad 1:
1 Imperial Officer 14
3 Stormtroopers 15
The Twins:
Gorc (Dark Side Acolyte) 16
Pic (Dark Side Acolyte) 16
Total 61

Imperial Victory Conditions

The Imperial player wins by accomplishing the goal below:

Our Master Will Be Pleased: If 8t88 and Kyle are defeated, the Imperial player wins the scenario.

Fringe Setup

The Fringe force consists of 8t88 and Grendel, its monstrous pet.

8t88 and Grendel begin anywhere in the southernmost row of squares in the Conference Room.

8t88 (Security Battle Droid) 28
Grendel (Wampa) 13
Total 41

Fringe Victory Conditions

The Fringe player wins by accomplishing the following goal.

Die Another Day: 8t88 must escape via the northern stairs for the Fringe player to win the scenario.

Special Scenario Rules

The following special rules are in effect for this mission:

Medpacs: Place two medpac tiles in the Medical Station.

Limited Exit: Only Rebel and Fringe units may exit the scenario via the northern stairs.

Bryar Power: Kyle is carrying his Bryar pistol, which allows him to inflict 10 Damage via ranged attacks.

Rahn's Assistance: The spirit of the Jedi Qu Rahn aids Kyle on this mission, giving him 5 Force Points instead of his normal 2.

Lightsaber Deflect: By spending 1 Force Point, Kyle takes no damage with a save of 11 when hit by a nonmelee attack. Kyle may not use this power and attack with his Bryar pistol on the same turn.

The Twins: Gorc and Pic share an otherworldly bond through their Sith nature. As long as they are within 6 squares of each other, both get an additional +4 to Attacks and a total of 4 Force Points, instead of their usual 2, to draw on during the scenario. However, if one Twin takes damage from an attack, the other Twin must make a save of 11 or take half the damage suffered by his Twin himself. If one Twin is defeated, the other immediately loses the 2 additional Force Points and 1 of its own Force Points.

Force Grip: By spending 1 Force Point, Gorc can deal 10 points of damage to an enemy within line of sight instead of making his usual attack. This follows all of the usual rules for choosing a target (for example, you can target an enemy with cover only if it is the nearest). Using Force Grip is not an attack and does not require an attack roll.

Surprise Move: By spending 1 Force Point, Pic can immediately move up to 6 squares after initiative is determined and before any other character activates.

Melee Attack: 8t88 can attack only adjacent enemies.

A Valuable Brainbox: If 8t88 is defeated, place the damaged R5 tile on the board where the droid was defeated. This tile represents the droid's head. Any character (including Grendel) may pick up the head by moving over it.

8T88, Droid Infochant

A sentient being would be hard pressed to find a more bitter individual -- Human, alien, or droid -- than the gangly mechanical information broker 8t88.

The nearly 200-year-old Tiss'sharl administrative droid had been the head droid managing the legendary Woostri HoloScan Database. However, in an elaborate prank cooked up by Vice-Chancellor Zokor Polpot of the University of Coruscant, designed to embarrass his boss during a Woostri visit, 8t88's original crocodilian head was stolen and replaced with the smaller head of a JMM espionage model.

While the episode resulted in the UC chancellor's resignation, the event was nothing if not traumatic for 8t88 himself. Becoming afflicted with the droid equivalent of dementia, 8t88 was horrified by his "disfigurement." Besides forever after making sure to keep a frequently updated backup of his memory files, the paranoid droid interpreted the Woostri incident as a mark of droid prejudice, turning 8t88 into a brazen misanthrope obsessed with finding the beings that had wronged him. But because he only had access to his auxiliary hard drive's memories of the event, his recollection of the perpetrators was spotty.

Calculating the straightest line between his programmed abilities and vengeance to be a trail of money, 8t88 decided to immerse himself up to his audio sensors in the world of information bartering. A genius at deciphering codes and ancient languages, 8t88 figured that by becoming a highly sought-after infochant, he would find leads to the persons responsible for his disfigurement, while also accumulating such staggering wealth as to allow him every extravagance in revenging himself.

Though the droid delighted in the metaphor of his being actually heartless, 8t88 had a soft spot for his pet Grendel, a monstrous, wing-clipped creature known as an hornagaunt and native to Tertiary Kesmere, a cloudy, storm-wracked world in the Raioballo sector.

Outbidding the underworld infochant known as Balancesheet, 8t88 took on a job from the Dark Jedi Jerec to track down the location of the hidden Valley of the Jedi. A wild cat-and-mouse game between 8t88 and the Rebel Kyle Katarn ensued when 8t88 stole a data disk, belonging to the late Morgan Katarn, with the key to finding the valley. The chase resulted in 8t88 getting his arm blown off and Kyle requiring a dunk in a bacta tank.

After replacing his missing arm with that from an 88 chassis he kept for spare parts (which, infuriatingly, also had had its original cranial unit pilfered), the entire business finally came to a head, literally, aboard the cargo ship Sulon Star. There, instead of getting paid for successfully deciphering the location of the Valley of the Jedi, 8t88 got his cranium lopped off by Jerec's minion Pic. The droid's pet hornagaunt then proceeded to swallow his master's head, forcing Kyle to carve the metal skull from one of the beast's three stomachs in order to retrieve the valley coordinates.

Kyle presumed 8t88 deactivated after the affair, but several years later, the former Emperor's Hand Mara Jade came across the disembodied head of 8t88 on the planet Rathalay within the lair of smuggling kingpin Kaerobani. There, the droid head that was never wanted in the first place was more spiteful than ever, and pitifully plotted to reclaim its body.

However, a smattering of reports have also trickled in from various parts of the galaxy over the years of belligerent 88 droids sporting a variety of cranial units: one with a Phase I Dark Trooper head on the planet Neshtab, another with a BL-series noggin on Keyorin in the Belderone sector, and even an 88 with a vocabulary-challenged ASP head on Omze's Incredible Travelling Starport. (The last was said to have caused the droid no end of consternation, as the ASP head was only capable of uttering the words "negative" and "affirmative.")

Most recently, an 88 was spotted sporting an EV robotic skull on Mawan, a sighting that coincided with visiting UC Chancellor Polpot's fatal accident. Given the rarity of 88 series droids and the recent Mawan incident, 8t88's skull and torso have each been recently honored with individual entries in General Airen Cracken's most wanted list.
