Edge has awarded Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction 8/10 in its latest lead review - claiming that the title is 'in reach of greatness'.
The mag is particularly impressed with protagonist Sam Fisher's ability to turn environments into 'torture chambers' at the press of a button.
'[Even] the presence of a piano suddenly fills the room with ominous potential' it reports.
It adds: 'The environments, at their best, are playgrounds for Fisher's lethal abilities, giving him every opportunity to outflank and outwit opponents who otherwise outgun him.'
It calls one particular chase around the Lincoln Memorial Ground 'heart-pumping', and praises the new, less-stealthy style of play. 'As Splinter Cell goes from covert to overt, a new-found dynamism emerges,' Edge reports.
However, the mag finds flaws in the games 'short' single-player campaign - and says that too much of the title is played in new atmospheric monocrome.
'But when Conviction hits its stride, the environments unlock the player's tactical ambitions in a way that's truly empowering,' it adds.
Splinter Cell Conviction is released next Friday in the UK.
It's good to hear positive things about the franchise going forward and attempting to do something new....rather than the bleating of people saying "mmmaaahhh......no stealth...."
Cool. Disappointed that the campaign is short, especially as Ubisoft said it wasn't. I'll play it on the hardest difficulty to ensure it lasts a while.
Good to hear, but had this pre-ordered for quite a while now, I must have completed that demo around four different ways. Looking forward to jumping into the co-op after completing it single player as well.
Meanwhile, it's back to Just Cause 2, then it's Alan Wake, Split Second, Red Dead Redemption...aaahhhhgghh!
And on top of that the flaming Sun comes out, how cruel is that!
The new co-op video they have up on IGN looks brilliant.
Check it out!
Great video, cheers for the link!
It might be an idea to set up a thread in the Xbox section for anyone who wants a co op Game (May is pretty much out though Reach Beta and Alan Wake), if anyone fancies it?
I'm not basing my comment on the score, this game is more of the same thing with the mandatory co-op thrown in. Heavy Rain was a very rare kind of game for this generation. The two are non comparable.

Heavy Rain wasn't that rare, there's loads of games that bore the t**s off me.

Ah, I see your basing it on videos you have seen online and a short 10 nminute demo? Understood.
I think there will be far better reviews and dont edge only review the single player side. They wont have been able to really check out multiplayer or co-op!
At seems like theres no mention of them in the review so 8/10 for the single player only?
The co-op sounds a blast but a short single player campaign is pretty unforgiveable for this type of game. Guess i will just hope Hitman does the stuff.
Nothing if not predictable Voodoo, nothing if not predictable.
Ironic coming from the guy that wets his pants at every xbox exclusive. Imagine forming an opinion of a game from online videos, the blighter! Who would ever do that?

Getting excited over Games, I know, the shame .
I just meant you never said anything to Sinthetic who mentioned he didnt like the Conviction demo but you then went after Mantis when he said he didnt enjoy the GoW3 demo. Sinthetics comment was first in the thread, its not your fault though, you must have missed it, because if you had seen it im sure you would have said to Sinthetic 'Congratulations... you've just found out people have different opinions to you. Well done.' Or maybe you wouldnt have? Funny that.

I never said anything to Sinthetics comment! The guy expressed an opinion, why would I have to say anything to him? He's entitled to his opinion. Just because a games an xbox exclusive doesn't mean everyones like you and automatically likes it. Pull your head out of Microsofts backside for once in your life.
Hmm, I enjoyed the demo- and I do love my Splinter Cell/Stealth games (hope your taking notes Kojima)- but I've just preordered Alan Wake so this is going to have to wait a bit.

That was my point Voodoo, Sinthetic commented that he didnt like the Conviction Demo before Mantis said he didnt like the GoW3 demo, yet you chose to tell Mantis Congratulations for finding out that people have different opinions.
Why highlight Mantis's comment and not Sinthetics, that was kind of my point. If Mantis had said he didnt like the Forza 3 demo, I doubt you would have said a thing.
This game looks spectacular based upon some of the action-use-the-environment clips I've watched online. I was planning on purchasing this game however, since Ubisoft's decision to make all their PC games require constant 24 hour internet connectivity I won't buy any of their games on any platform upon release. I won't buy any of their PC games as they are essentially broken, and the console versions of their games can be bought safely second-hand thus not supporting their behaviour. Reap what you sow Ubisoft. Reap what you sow.

Rich coming from the guy that mentioned Heavy Rain right from the start.

I only mentioned HR to point out to Sinthetic that it got a lower score than SC:C in the Edge review that was all. Didnt down play it or say it was a filler, if anything I have praised HR on this site (even though I havent played it).
Lets not drag this on any longer, eh? Its Friday the Sun is (kind of) shining and its nearly home time, both HR and SC:C look like great Games. Deal?

Deal.
For the record I really enjoyed the Conviction demo. I really like the direction they've taken it.
He could probably say the same thing about you and sony
How are those reponsive frame rates?
Reponsive
I'm telling ya, it didn't feel as responsive on ps3 with the controls. I can't blame input lag, the 360 version of the lost planet 2 demo was fine Framerate seemed a bit worse on the ps3 version. I'm not making this up
Glad 2 see you kids patch up in the end. Was getting kind a embarrasing. But also funny and tragicomical. LOL Have a nice weekend!
Oh, I also preordered the new SC game.
And I bought Just Cause 2, but I've only clocked in 2 hours. Not because I don't like it. It's because of Borderlands. Just hit level 61 yesterday, and finished everythinhg except the extra boss. Heard he's a pain in the ...
Oh all the games. Too little time.
Soon we have SMG2 as well. And Lost planet 2 etc etc etc
