CAMERON SMITH has set himself the goal of being fit for Origin I after the Storm skipper's horror season continued in last night's Test when he lasted just 28 minutes of Australia's 12-8 win over New Zealand at Melbourne's new AAMI Park.

Kangaroos doctor Paul Annett said Smith would miss tomorrow's match against the Broncos and could be sidelined for up to a month after hyperextending his left elbow.

The opening Origin match is at ANZ Stadium on May 26. However, Smith said his focus was to be fit to wear the No.9 jersey for Queensland.

''My aim is to get out there on Sunday against the Broncos but I don't know whether that will happen, so certainly Origin is what I will be striving for now,'' Smith said.

''The feeling I had was that I might have dislocated it but we're not 100 per cent sure yet. I've got to get some scans tomorrow. It might be a partial dislocation and ligament damage. I think I just hyperextended it. It's pretty painful. I've just got to get some stuff done tomorrow. I'm not sure what it is, I've been fairly lucky in my career so far with injuries.''

Worse for Smith, the Storm captain was the victim of what he would normally regard to be friendly fire when his arm became trapped under Adam Blair while attempting to tackle his Melbourne teammate.

A concerned Blair immediately signalled that Smith was injured and after play was stopped for some time he was taken from the field.

''I was in the tackle and I think I was just trying to get up and play the ball when I heard him scream so I thought I should stop,'' Blair said.

''It is just hard to see one of your teammates hurt like that … so hopefully it is not too serious.''

There were also fears that Smith may have suffered a broken arm but they were quickly allayed by Annett and the injury was diagnosed as a medial strain of his left elbow, although it was thought he may have suffered a dislocation as well. ''I just got my arm stuck under Adam Blair and I think he just turned over to try and get on his front and my arm bent and just kept going,'' Smith said. ''I could feel it getting past the point of … it was painful when it happened and it is painful now. It's an unfortunate part of the game but injuries happen and I will be back.''

Annett said: ''Looking at him now I think he will be out on Sunday and he could miss two to four weeks. He has a partial dislocation, he stretched it and he was in a bit too much pain to go back out. We were worried that if he did, he could do more damage.''

If he was to miss Origin I it would be a big blow for Smith as it is one of just a few games that mean anything for the Storm captain this season after the club was left unable to earn competition points from any match they win as part of their punishment for salary cap breaches.

Knights back-rower Zeb Taia is also in doubt for his club's match against Gold Coast in Newcastle tomorrow after suffering medial-ligament damage in his left knee in a tackle just after play resumed when Smith left the field.

Like Smith, Taia was injured by a clubmate, after being tackled by Newcastle skipper Kurt Gidley - the replacement for Smith - twisting his knee awkwardly.
