While Lady Gaga has beaten U.S. President Barack Obama in acquiring 10 million fans or “Likes” on Facebook, the new Philippine President Benigno “Noynoy” S. Aquino III has surpassed Michelle Obama to become the third Politician in the world with the most number of Facebook fans at over 1.5 million.
President Aquino has been a phenomenal success in the social networking site since he started his unexpected presidential run in September of last year—thanks mainly to a well organized and highly talented new media volunteer group. From zero Facebook fans in September 1, 2009, his fan page gained over 1.3 million fans in just six months. The last few months prior to elections, the fan page was gaining around 12 thousand new fans a day. It could have even gained more if not for a technical problem in Facebook that saw an unusual and rapid decrease of fans three weeks before the actual voting.
After President Aquino’s inauguration in June 30, 2010, where he gave a resounding speech that resonated among the Filipino people, a renewed interest along with a renewed hope saw a huge number of people “Liking” his fan page. Since then, his Facebook page has gained an average of around 20 thousand fans daily.
