Supporters of the man Sarah Palin and the Tea Party Express want to be the next Senator from Alaska, attorney Joe Miller, have a unique way of letting people know who they'll be voting for in Alaska's August 24 Republican primary -- at a recent rally, they marched behind a giant black Hummer bearing Miller's name and carried assault weapons.

The candidate's take? Move along, nothing to see here.

"You know, guns are a pretty big thing up here in Alaska," Miller explained on ABC News' "Topline" webcast this afternoon. "It's not unusual at political rallies, it's not unusual at parades to see that kind of thing."

"Probably, though, in the lower 48, it does raise some eyebrows," Miller added.

The heavily-armed paraders raised eyebrows for at least one Alaskan: Longtime Palin critic and blogger Andrew Halcro, who posted video of the parade to his website under the headline, "Is this who you want in the U.S. Senate?"

(Halcro ran against Palin as an independent in 2006 and is supporting Miller's opponent in the GOP Senate primary, incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski.)

Check out video of the parade below, and see how your eyebrows handle it:

I'm sure they aren't suggesting anything. No, they're just normal, patriotic Americans. They'd never imply that they might get violent if they don't get their way.

You make a good point. Has anyone else noticed the relationship between the increasing degree of obsession for the need to own and carry more and more firepower with the increasing degree in the body mass index and facial hair combined with a decreasing size of the penis of the gun owner. Overcompensate much?

I think that Sarah Palin is the smartest woman politician I have ever came across. Even her picks get media coverage and see a surge in their polls. She is definitely no Margette Thatcher, but a politician's version of John Gotti. She is untouchable and when you look at her record objectly and the political moves she has made it places her in a unique position to be on the ticket for 2012, check out this article that talks about that, trust me its a good read

You think her record is great?

When she was mayor, it was the town's policy to make rape victims pay for their criminal investigation by charging them for the rape kits. Rape kits can cost upwards of $1200. A poor victim wouldn't be able to afford that within hours of an attack, if ever. No other types of crime victims had to pay for their own investigation.

It took an act by the Alaska legislature to force Wasilla to stop this practice.

Any person who would force a victim of a violent crime to pay for justice is not someone who I want governing our country.

Really? Better to check the numbers than run with the scripted narrative. A Fox News poll that found that 51% of registered voters say Palin's support for a candidate would make them less likely to support that person, while only 25% say it would make them more likely (and that was by Fox News -- her employer and the voice of the Radical Reckless Right!). A plurality -- 47% -- of Tea Partiers said they don't think Palin would make a good president, as opposed to 40% who think she would be an effective chief executive, a new New York Times/CBS News poll found. Thirteen percent didn't know or had no answer. And if the Tealanders don't like her, how poorly do you think the rest of the country thinks of her?

I think it might be time for that little wake up call. I'd love to see Democratic supporters of the President march down a big city street carrying THEIR firearms because Oh Yes, we too are gun owners. We're just not bat sh$t crazy enough to base a whole lifestyle around brandishing them.

Just imagine the tizzy at Faux News if even 100 Dems marched through a street with Firearms.

Heres one better. Think Tiananman Square or the Pettis Bridge. The most courageous act was the lone unarmed man or unarmed marchers facing down the thugs. Counter march in the opposite direction, arms linked wearing t-shirts that read, "I do not need a gun to show my courage". Intercept the gunnies at a certain point. Sit down across their path with arms linked and see what these brave commandos do when the police arrive. Think like Martin Luther King, not Martin Bormann.

You came up with the best tactic, but one that takes an unusual amount of courage in a lot of people. African Americans used that tactic when led by MLK,Jr, and it does work, but one can get seriously injured or killed by doing that. The cops wouldn't be likely to help them.

Connecting the dots. 2 years ago this month a wingnut opened fire in the Knoxville (TN) Unitarian Universalist Church during a Sunday service. He picked the church because our denomination is very liberal and they had a banner outside with the Welcoming Church invite to the GLBT community. Searches of his home and vehicle discovered copies of books by Beck, et al on the evils of liberalism.

The usher, a long time member of the church, deliberately stood in front of the shooter to block his targets. He died at the scene and a woman who was hit died later. 5 others were wounded. As soon as the gunman stopped to reload, 4 men jumped him and held him down until the cops got there.

Unitarian - Universalists are almost as pacifist as the Quakers. Which, as this group demonstrated, can be a very courageous stand.

I remember that well. I knew some people who were members of that church. Very fine people; if they were any measure of the congregation at large, the courage and quick thinking displayed by that usher and the four who subdued the gunman was no accident.

Contrary to public opinion amongst many conservatives, they do NOT make your bulge in your pants look bigger when you carry one.

My father in law was a psychopharmacologist in Pittsburgh and was fairly well known there. Except for safety issues (esp. with gun-obsessed patients) he never had much interest in guns himself.

Man so many subjects come to mind when I see a group of people walking in front of a black hummer with semi-assualt rifles and handguns. It's like a movie script. Can't you see the slow move of this bearded guy with the gun strapped to his chest. Of course I am not really sure how this affects it's audience but I think the last thing I want in America is a politician surrounded by armed supporters. It brings to mind dictatorships, militia movements and general incivility.

I know guns are not abnormal in Alaska but do most, even a small minority of people really go to your everyday parade or rally with weapons? I do not have children but when I was in grade school, I had a policy of not being at a party where I knew a gun was present. It just makes me uncomfortable. Accidents can happen and when you add underage drinking to the equation your asking for possible conflict. I do realize that many gun owners are nothing short of
grade-A citizens and as I grew up it is their right to own and handle a weapon provided that they have proper licensing and have passed whatever state-background check is required.

I'm pretty sure that's the idea -- sending intimidating messages regarding what might happen if they don't get their way. They're working to save democracy -- as long as that means mob rule is acceptable if they don't win democratically.

In other words, these people don't really stand for much at all except a childish getting their own way and redefining "democracy" to meet their personal wants. And hating minorities, of course.

I am reminded of the annual May Day parade in Moscow, where the Soviet military reminded the world how it is a world power, with its miles of dress military marching among tanks, missile carriers. Ultimately it wasn't undermined militarily, it fell because it couldn't afford the bills. In the US today, conservatives are concerned that we've been spending way too much on war, and want to knock down all of the entitlements to make sure we don't suffer the same problems down the road.

Funny you should say that. A few years ago while attending a business convention, I was invited to attend the show of one of the country stars who maintains a theater in Pigeon Forge, TN. (Not my first choice of entertainment, but it was one of those invitations that you can't easily decline.) One of the "numbers" in the show was a "patriotic medley" complete with video footage to accompany it. A good three-quarters of the footage was military: air force jets, tanks, soldiers in combat gear, etc. And the thought that came to me, too, was that it was like one of those Soviet May Day celebrations.

Just getting the notion into your head that you should bring your automatic rifle along to a civilian political manifestation speaks loudly to the unhinged nature of U.S. discourse.

It's going down a very ugly path. If they don't get the wins they have promised themselves this fall, they will claim that KenyanObama/ACORN stole the election from them.

There will be more guns, until they are used.

And it's not just Alaska, of course.

Eagle River, right? Anchorage's Clayton county. Suburban, strip malls of chains and churches, and lots of military, retired military, kids on ATVs, AIP supporters, elderly John Birch cardholders, and, yup, wingers with guns galore. (The only place in AK that I can think, off a base, with more wingers is North Pole, outside of Fairbanks.) From my limited experience of Eagle River (basically, stopping there a few time for supplies, gas, and a visit to the Chugiak-Eagle River Branch Library) the kind of behavior on view in that video is well within community standards for Eagle River.

The Eagle River crime rate is less than, say, Fayetteville, NC but they do have some impressively dodgy crime, even semi-political crime. One recent murder is part of AK wingnut lore. It's standard tabloid issue: Girlfriend in the Closet Shoots Public Safety Commissioner. The Palin crowd half-heartedly tried to use the tale of the murder--esp. because the police showed up late and because, well, a woman was the shooter so, you know, you never know--to argue for less gun regulation and more money for troopers. But the details of the story (beyond the shooter reading Tom Clancey's Op-Center while waiting in the closet, which could go either way) didn't really lean in their favor and it was back burnered quickly.

I'm sure these people consider themselves patriotic. If a group of armed black men marched down the street, I wonder if these people would call them 'patriotic'.

there's a part of me that would love to see a parade of black men marching down main street draped in ak47s and handguns; but the resulting bloodbath would take the fun out of it...

I lived in Alaska for 20 years and never saw an assault rifle or handgun, except at a police officer's side. Rifles and shotguns, sure. But displaying assault rifles in public is a new thing.

The bat-shit crazy politics, however, are not new. Indeed, the libertarian/successionist wing of Alaska -- the predecessors of today's Tea Party -- would have been much stronger except for all of the infighting. And infighting + guns = wingnut population control.

And there are people who really believe the woman named Sarah Palin should be President? Can you just imagine her inaugural march to the White House....with this group leading her walk? USA would be the laughing stock of the world.

Yup. Joe Vogler, the AIP founder, for example, apparently died in a plastic explosives deal gone bad and, of course, being an Alaskan patriot and all, he was buried in Canada because his will specified that he not be buried under the American flag. Now, that's some gooey bat-shit, even by winger standards. (I met Joe a few times and liked him. He was crazy but energetically crazy and smart about everything except politics. He was funny at times and, well, the Birchers down the street made Vogler seems kinda sane. It's a shame he's not around to taunt Palin)

I propose we start calling these Palin folks the "Trigger Happy Cowards" , or THC. Party.

I thought about "Fat Angry White Guy", or FAWG, but I don't want to stigmatize obese people.

These fat guys may look scary, but think about this,,,,in a firefight do you want a large, visible, slow moving target next to you? yeah,,, me neither...if the shots don't kill them, it'll be the heart attack.

Im sure these fat white guys and their candidate are concerned about their image and message they are sending...NOT!!! I wonder what would happen if their opponent's supporters were there carrying THEIR weapons too? Now that would make an interesting debate wouldn't it?

Is it just me, but I seem to see more fat white guys brandishing assault rifles pointing towards their dicks. What's that message? I love the fact that these assholes think their right to own a weapon is in danger.....they evidently don't know how to read a newspaper since gun owners have more rights it seems than those who don't want guns near themselves. They can even carry them while drinking in a bar...isn't that just wonderful?!

Why do they need all those guns? Being from Texas I can understand a few guns at a parade, but that seems like an excessive amount of guns. Look if you can't walk right because you have some many guns on you that you look like someone from Red Dead Redemption then maybe dial it down to just a gun. You're on ten we need on zero.

It would appear that the majority of the posters are focused upon non salient issues. A man fat or otherwise carrying an assault weapon as a participant in a political rally, parade et al, is the only relevance.

Obviously the weapons are intended to send a message to whomever is the perceived party or person of the opposition party.

It is also interesting to note, that two Black men standing outside of a polling place, one brandishing a hand held WMD, a night stick, was the cause of national debate; while such an arrogant display in Alaska was ignored by the media.

Bush had people arrested for wearing T-shirts uncomplimentary to king Bush during some political event, but fools wear guns to an Obama political event with impunity. Does anyone sense a double standard here?

I go to Alaska every year to fish. Trust me those folks you see are indeed corpulent, but in a fight they are a force with which to be reckoned.

The Court’s interpretation of the second amendment not withstanding, if there is not some reasonable restrictions placed upon gun owners, violence is all but inevitable. I doubt violence will determine the outcome of an election, but he way the tea party is going, it is only a matter of time.

I hope I am wrong, but I have my fears.
