CBS won the night in adults 18-49 and viewers and ABC was second and NBC third.

Big Bang Theory scored a 4.8/15 (rating/share) with adults 18-49, up 1/10th over last year’s premiere on Monday night at 9:30 following Two and a Half Men.  It was also up 41vs. the first half hour of the Survivor premiere last year.  $#*! My Dad Says was second best in the hour with a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating and nearly 12.5 million viewers, and was up 7% vs. the second half hour of last year’s Survivor premiere. As expected Community got crushed at 8:00pm but it performed as well as or better than it did most of the time last season.  It was down against last season’s premiere, and by a lot, but last season it premiered a week earlier and was on at 9:30 after The Office.  It was actually up 16% vs. its first 8pm episode last season, despite the Big Bang competition.

The Office was up a couple of tenths from last year’s premiere on September 17, 2009 when it had more of the night to itself.  The premiere of Outsourced, with a 3.5 rating was down, but just a touch from what Community premiered with following The Office last year.

30 Rock was down 0.4 from its debut last year to a 2.6 rating with adults 18-49, but last year it had a 4.1 lead-in from The Office rather than a 2.2 lead-in from Community.   30 Rock was up about 25% vs. last year’s premiere of Parks & Recreation at 9:30p on September 17, 2009.

Justin Bieber is no Taylor Swift when it comes to CSICSI was down 17% with adults 18-49 versus its premiere last year to a 3.4 rating.

Grey’s Anatomy had the highest adults 18-49 rating of the night with a 5.3, but this was down 21% from last year’s final numbers with adults 18-49.   The Mentalist was the night’s most-watched show with over 15 million viewers, and its 3.3 rating with adults 18-49 was down 8% vs. last year’s finals.

Bones held up OK at 8pm with a 2.7 adults 18-49 rating, though it too was down 13% from last year’s premiere.  Last year Bones premiered a week earlier.  As was typical last year when there was full competition, and new shows on NBC at 9pm, Fringe wasn’t strong with a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating.  Fringe was down 30% from last year’s premiere, but like Bones, last week it premiered a week earlier (that night its only new competition was on NBC and CW).

Here are some notes on the CW shows:

Vampire Diaries was up from last week in key categories, including 12% in adults 18-34 (1.9/6), 8% in women 18-34 (2.6/8), 14% in adults 18-49 (1.6/5) and 20% in viewers (3.6mil).  Vampire popped back up to premiere levels in adults 18-34 and 18-49.

Vampire Diaries ranked first in the hour in female teens.  TVD also beat the premiere of My Generation (if that means anything) in adults 18-34 and women 18-34.

Nikita was flat week to week in total viewers (3.2mil) but off a 0.1 in demos.

Late-night results are below the primetime table.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
