Sixth Borough Stealing NYC Residents

nycphiladelphia1010.jpg

According to Philadelphia, New Yorkers love moving to... Philadelphia! The Sixth Borough is taking away from the other five boroughs. The new data shows that "migration from New York City to Philadelphia more than doubled during the period studied, from 1,332 in 1993 to 3,100 in 2008, thereby supporting the notion that Philadelphia has become a haven for some New Yorkers priced out of that city." Well, you can get a pretty sweet place there for 800 bucks—if you're enticed, these people can help you, traitor. [via NY Mag]

In Philly you need a license to blog.

You have to pay $300 just to have a blog, even if you make no money from it.

I know this doesn't really have anything to do with this story but whenever I think of Philly that's the first thing that comes to mind.

  • Ed

This is a meaningless story anyway. An increase of 1,768 people over a fifteen year span is completely insignificant.

I like Philly, but it can't be "the sixth borough" because its a bit too far away to live there and commute back to your job in Manhattan. You need to get a job there. In which case it is no different than trying to move anyplace else in the country. Or you have the sort of income source where you can live anywhere, and I can think of much better places to live if you fall into this category.

  • echo

They all move back to NYC.

  • exnyer

Does Philly give you a loaded pistol upon checking in??

  • Steven

South Florida, Miami area to be exact is the sixth borough.

  • I moved to Philly for a few years back in the early 1990s. Yea, it was ok in some respects, but believe me, those folks will be back.

  • longacre

Or they'll move in with their auntie and uncle in Bel Air.

  • valeriob

I see what you did there

  • Ha, or that. I wish I had relatives in Bel Air. Sigh.

  • spiritross

I agree, that is horrible analysis. She is using a common denominator with no adjustment for huge population differences. Horrible journalism.

    Besides

    Yonkers is the sixth borough.

  • schadenfreudian mensch

You're mistaken. Newark is the sixth borough.

  • random transplant

    JC is the better borough.

  • hotstepper

if you ignore Jen's analysis and take a sec to actually look at the graph, you see that the number of Phillies moving to NYC is rising precipitously and was nearly identical to the number of NYC-expats last year. and seeing as how Philly is a much smaller city, those numbers mean a lot more as a percentage of their population.

  • kazubes

Must be a last resort option, Philly is a crime ridden dump

  • silver

Yep. If I want a PD that doesn't give a shit and is paid off by all the dealers, I'll goto Philly.

I'll stay in my nice cozy stop and frisk NYC. Philly still looks like NYC in the 1970s.

  • whitecastlerock

I like Philly, but it is a real shithole

  • ilovejapgirls

it must be all the met fans

  • theboneranger

    Philly is for quitters.

  • thefacts

Rents and prices are cheap there for a reason.

My folks, who spent most of their adult life in NYC, decided to sell their NYC home and retire to a cheaper place in Philadelphia.

But, even in their 70s, they thought Philly was a dump: dull and plain.

After two years, they sold the house and moved back.
